Does Wideman stay next year?

He's got the tools, and he's playing amazing. Think he's around in 2012-13?

Hivemind 11-04-2011 01:54 PM

I can say, with 100% certainty, maybe.

NobodyBeatsTheWiz 11-04-2011 02:19 PM

If he takes a pay cut.

ChibiPooky 11-04-2011 02:22 PM

It looks likely to come down to him or Green, or him and Carlson or him and Semin... so no, unless he takes a big pay cut.

not gonna happen, nor should it from the players perspective. say he keeps it up and the caps want him, he'd be giving them a pretty huge discount just by signing for the same money, nevermind less. if he keeps it up, dudes banking.

overall, impossible to say at this point. wayyyy too many questions. semin, green, whether wides keeps it up, how orlov plays in hershey, etc etc etc.

Brave Sir Robin 11-04-2011 02:51 PM

We also have Orlov coming up.

Capitlols 11-04-2011 02:57 PM

Yeah he's playing himself elsewhere, I would like him back though.

Agree Olov's in the wings. Put the money toward's the Shea Weber fund or at the very least the Tim Gleason fund.

Total Wideman/Hamrlik and Tom Poti's current salaries and they're just 300gs below the current salaries of Weber and Gleason.

Weber - Green
Alzner - Carlson
Gleason - Orlov
Erskine

I can wish.

Hivemind 11-04-2011 03:17 PM

Sorry geezer. Weber plays the right side. :sarcasm:

Fallschirmyager 11-04-2011 03:44 PM

That depends a great deal on how much he is asking and the term. Sometimes a player finds that perfect mix and will take less to stay. No idea whether Wideman falls into that category. The way he's playing I wouldn't blame him for trying to hit a big contract.

RandyHolt 11-04-2011 03:55 PM

My guess, he is posting great numbers; if they continue, he is so gone.

If his game falls off a cliff or Orlov isnt ready, we will keep him.

Suter - Green is the pairing you should be wishing for. Also, at least one of Hamrlik and Schultz will be there next year.

ilikeblocks 11-04-2011 09:48 PM

How many points does it take to play himself out of Washington? 50? 55?

Drake1588 11-04-2011 09:56 PM

In the end, Suter and Weber are going to re-up in Nashville, I think.

Wideman has been great, and his absence when injured was crippling. If the money is right, he'd be a nice keep.

Roughing 11-05-2011 07:09 AM

We can't pay everyone. Wideman, Semin and Knuble are all possibly out for the high profile youngsters.

who do you think they would consider replacing those guys with? because thats a lot of salary ($13m or so), and the only way i think they dont spend every penny available is if they win the cup. and even then, they still might.

Not retaining Semin makes keeping Wideman easy. Orlov making the jump means you do have to clear a roster spot but there are others that can be moved coughschultzcough instead.

NobodyBeatsTheWiz 11-05-2011 08:27 AM

I wouldn't keep Wideman at the expense of Semin (or another goalscorer). Goal scoring is an area where we're actually getting a bit thin. If Semin and Knuble go, there would only be two 30-goal scorers in the forward ranks, and there aren't many of those available on the free agent market.

If you're going to let Semin walk, for me it's got to be for a power forward type that can score or a long-term partner for Green (*cough* Suter *cough*), not a puck-mover.

It's a while until that decision is made. I'm just saying that Kuz, Orlov and Eakin will seriously push for regular roles next year so some of the older/expensive guys may not be here. Right now I think the major money will be spent keeping our guys here but I could see another nice FA forward brought in. Again, though, those decisions are a long way off.

Based on now, unless they can unload Hammer's contract, Wideman could be the Dman out. I like him a lot but Green and Carlson need to be paid. With the forwards I don't know that Semin will keep gettin $7M/year and Knubes is pushing 40. I like those guys but something will have to give.

discobob 11-05-2011 12:43 PM

Resign Green and Carlson for the same combined cap hit as Wideman and Green this year....let Orlov take Wideman's place....

I wouldn't let Semin walk...we need his goal scoring....even if Kuznetsov comes over, he will not likely fill Semin's shoes right away....I'd resign Semin for the same hit for two more years...

bonzaibondra12 11-05-2011 01:01 PM

Wideman needs to stay. Orlov probably replaces Hamrlik not Wideman (rigth vs left shot). Green is injured too often to not have a Wideman on the PP.

To the person saying Gleason. That is a complete different player than Wideman. One doesn't replace the other.

Wideman stays if we can fit him under the cap, and I expect that we do.

Raikkonen 11-05-2011 06:55 PM

I would say Knuble is in the energy saving mode and could be much more valueable in the Spring. Less miles this regular season and maybe he will stay for one more year (less $ probably).

With Kuznetsov looking good in KHL and still not bulked up enough for NHL it's possible to see another short contract for Semin.

So I think Wideman will be cut in the summer.

It's bad that we have Poti and Hamrlik and Schultz all in one time.
