Newest Wild Fan

Well, I was recently accepted to the University of Minnesota and I'm excited to know that I will be within close proximity to the Xcel Center!

Is there anything special I should know about Minneapolis/the Wild? I know a good amount about the team and the prospects just by being a fan of hockey,

Go Wild!

Northland Wild Man 11-06-2011 02:01 PM

Welcome.

llamapalooza 11-06-2011 02:25 PM

Congrats!! How much do you know about the area so far? I'm sure we can be good for helping you get to know your way around.

GreatStateofHockey 11-06-2011 03:10 PM

I don't know too much , but I will be visiting sometime between now and February.

BigT2002 11-06-2011 03:14 PM

Well since you're only like 18 (assuming you're frosh) then I will bestow to you the most important advice you will receive:

"The price upfront is never the final price"

Minnesota 11-06-2011 04:51 PM

Congrats on being a future Gopher!

1. The X is a long nine-mile bus ride from the U so it's not too close.
2. Check out Al's Breakfast.
3. Get Gopher hockey season tickets.

llamapalooza 11-06-2011 07:04 PM

On the plus side, that bus ride to the X is free if you have tickets.

Also, (at least the past two seasons) there's a student discount; $35 for lower bowl tickets on Monday through Wednesday.

You might find our visitors' guide useful too.

Although, by the time you graduate, there will be a light rail that connects the U to both St. Paul and Minneapolis.

+1 on Al's

That's true although I hate to think how bad the 16 and 50 (the bus routes for going from the U to downtown St. Paul) are right now.

You do know that Heatley is now a member of the Wild? Good luck with the conversion.

Yes, I would prefer he requests another trade. Michalek > Heatley, and I'm sure a return would fetch a much Better player.

:sarcasm:

But not really

Meh. I grew up in the Mitten State and still watch Detroit along with Minnesota. Kind of funny listening to my bro-in-law give me crap because I'm more Minnesota than Detroit now. Told him its a lot harder being a fan of a team that you know has an uphill battle rather than the team that is already on the top of the mountain. Think of this way, you'll have a Western Conference and Eastern Conference team ;)

I'm sorry.

llamapalooza 11-09-2011 09:43 PM

I seriously don't know anyone who actually finished at UMD. Their transfer rate is absurd.

Billy Mays Here 11-09-2011 10:17 PM

Well my dad's a grad of UMD but that was a long time ago. Ever since I can remember he's been a Gopher fan but he gives money back to UMD. I could tell he kinda wanted me to go there but I've never cared for Duluth. I felt more comftorable in smaller classes so I chose Hamline. I was always an Avs fan before I wen Wild post-lockout. We all must turn to the good side eventually.

From my class I know of
4 people that transferred from Twin Cities to UMD.
2 People that transferred from UWEC to Twin Cities.
1 Person that transferred from Mankato to Twin Cities.
1 Person that Transferred from St. Cloud to Hamline.
1 Person that transferred from St. Johns to St. Thomas.
and some more that i can't quite remember.

And i thought about transferring from UMD to Twin Cities, but my sophomore year is going MUCH smoother than Freshman year, happiness and general frame of mind-wise. My point being that a ton of people transfer colleges within the first couple years, 1st year can be rough and some people pin that on their school, sometimes unfairly.

Also one of my Profs said something like 60% of my original class is no longer at UMD, either from dropping out, failing out, or transferring.

But Education is what you make of it, I know plenty of kids from UMD that have been here 4 years, and have gotten into some great medical schools, I also know kids that have been here for 7 years.

No, the transfer rate is right where it should be expected. I mean, the school actually has dedicated transfer program for several majors, and even a few majors that can only be done as 2 @ UMD + 2 @ UofM. Outside of the people who were always intended to transfer from the moment they were admitted, the only transfers are those soft cities folk who can't live outside of their extremely sheltered environment.
