in lieu of the NHL why not adopt the London Racers!

I have been absent from the forum, because I am fairly busy guiding the sophomore London Racers into the new seasonof the EIHL (Elite Ice Hockey League). Last year in our first season we finished dead last ridiculed by many. I always said remember the first year Caps, Devils, Lightning etc, look out. Our friend the Riz is a huge help assisting our programme and so many thanks to him and his colleagues at Sports Interactive.

If it wasn't for the endless enthusiasm of my partner there would be no pro hockey in the British capital.

So why not look into what is going over here! Add the site to your favourites.
We have a very physical team with Canadians, some good Brits and couple of Euros for good measure. One Ranger draft pick of many moons ago Steve Moria is playing center for us. The goalie from Muskegon Fury Sly Daigle seems to be a real find.

The Racers played a travelling team of NHL rookies and journeyman to a 1-4 loss last Friday and it was a very good game considering it was our first week on ice and
the team is basically completely new to each other.

So I welcome you to visit, chew the fat in the very friendly forum, and maybe even
buy a cool replica shirt, or join future auctions for a game worn shirt. They are cool
and will get you looks (guaranteed)
And hopefully it will make the time seem go by faster until the Rangers lace them up.

your london ranger!

London - what is it you actually do? ie what's your job title? I went to a Racers game last year, it was fun but just a little too expensive really. Hope to get along again soon!

In 2002, the New York Times had this story about the Belfast Giants. Are there any heated rivalries in the Elite Ice Hockey League that would compare to those in soccer?

My role with the London Racers is something like the Good Fairy of the East!
I am making sure the London hockey fans hopes and dreams come true!
Not saying that I get it right, but I am trying.....

The biggest rivalry in the sport, is Nottingham and Sheffield! They hate each other with passion that even made the BBC to take notice

Let's Go Racers ! clap-clap-clapclapclap !

I'll be following the Racers very closely this season and I hope to get to see more games than last year. But hey, even though I only saw a handful of Racers games live last season, I still saw them win and register a shutout :) Shouldn't be too hard to beat last seasons record with this team you have assembled.

Hoping to catch season opener tomorrow at the Bikeshed.

your 1st season.

Yup, the first season with a team that was put together probably within two weeks before the season started with little resources for luring players to this team. They were outclassed all through the season but got a few wins near the end of the season with hard work. And I recall it was 3 wins, not just 2 :)

I was just going based off this site

but maybe the 1 in ( ) means an OT win? if so, cool

riz 09-18-2004 07:54 AM

Yeah, that one was an overtime win over one of the league powerhouses last year.

Last night the Racers won their season opener against Basingstoke 4-2. Dusan Halloun scored twice and then assisted on a goal by Yannick Tremblay and finally Ian McIntyre netted an empty net goal to finish it off. Vickers looked good, so we've got the Rangers connection going really good there.

We've got the better Yannick Tremblay, he was really flying out there last night :D

no none at all. It's all very mild with hockey in the UK in comparison. A lot of banter, and the like, but no pure hatred rivalries like you get in footy (soccer :yo: ).

Cos most teams are newish in the great scheme of things, there is no deep seated rivalries that can come ANYWHERE near the rivalries of many footy teams here.

LiquidClown 09-19-2004 10:12 PM

London!!!! Good to see ya again mate!

Good luck with the team my friend, just wondering what position are you playing in the organization?

And those jerseys are sweet! I think I'll have to pick myself up one , once I get a steady paying job....

Good luck with the Racers!

You wouldn't happen to have been sitting at the train station platform wearing a Rangers jersey a few weeks ago on a Sunday morning around 10.45 ?

Taz 09-21-2004 09:43 AM

No but i think i saw that dude in morrisons!

ACtually the oldest rivalry in ice hockey is English: Cambridge vs Oxford. I wouldn't say it is particularly heated though.

If I remember correctly, the yearly clash between Cambridge and Oxford is also one of the oldest, if not the very oldest, annual hockey "competition". Infact, I just found the page where it was mentioned: http://www.cam.ac.uk/societies/cuihc/wengen1.htm

So we do have some hockey traditions here on the misty islands, even though the current situation is not the greatest ever. As a Finn, I also need to show some respect, since Finland has never beaten Great Britain in ice hockey. And they have won as many World Championships as Finland, one each. Then again, we haven't played each other since 1962.... :)

Hi Liquid
Thank you for the wishes. The Racers are unbeaten after two games. The last game in Nottingham we were brought down seconds from the buzzer after a stick penalty call in which the offending stick was wide by the width of the tape at the heel of the stick - uneffingbelievable. They pulled the goalie and played 6-3 to
tie the game. How desperate Nottingham were.

Yes we like the uniforms too!

The difference vs last year is that now players believe they can compete with everyone!

Tonight home game vs Cardiff Devils! Should be a good one!

I just got back from London, and was considering going to the match between the Racers and the "NHL All-Stars". How did that pan out?

Sad London Ranger 09-29-2004 09:01 AM

sorry about the belated response 007

There is a write up about the game in this weeks Hockey News.

It was a great game that was far closer than 4-1 result would you believe. The Racers were guilty of squandering chances on the rather excellent Sport Impact
goalie Frankhauser (Bruin?)

From my perspective it was possibly one of the best games of hockey the British
Isles have seen played in many years.

Moreover it now appears that another NHL team is planning to visit London.
The IMG managed stars have put together a team and the planning for them to
visit is underway.

will keep you posted
