Btw, he scored 3 points today (1+2).

It's getting harder and harder to see how the Caps will be able to convince him to come over to play for peanuts. Someone is going to offer him the moon over there. Shrug. Here's hoping.

CapitalsCupFantasy 11-24-2011 03:00 PM

Fantastic skill. Kid should be on Ovy's line immediately. Not much contact in the KHL from those highlights.

I thought the pressing issue was whether or not he gets a top 6 role, not money.

Drake1588 11-24-2011 04:03 PM

I don't think anyone really knows. If he gets a $5M or $6M offer for next year, then it makes him think. He doesn't have the inevitable KHL offer yet. It will be massive, though.

Will buy his jersey the day he gets his Caps number, amazing. Thanks

I don't worry about KHL $$$ so much as his loyalty to Traktor, his perceived readiness to make the jump and perhaps a willingness to remain in order to endear himself further to the RHF. Less so the last as he seems like a head strong individual but it is a dynamic at play.

I would nonetheless be surprised if they managed to sign him to an ELC without performance-based bonuses regardless of what KHL offers are made.

I was considering a maximum combined contract + performance bonuses-laden package of $3.9M to be a given, myself. Sort of like the Ruutu ELC deal with Chicago. Atypical, but the only way to lure him over. Still wonder if it will be enough to offset all the other factors driving him to remain in Russia. The KHL has not shown that it can compete as a whole, but it can compete to retain the attentions of particular Russian players that it covets, just shy of the top-tier level. They're going to make him a Radulov sort of offer.

Langway 11-25-2011 10:32 AM

I'd hope they would not have to max out on their offer but we'll see. Tarasenko could be a pretty useful comparable if he signs first. It can always change but he did say recently that he has made up his mind what he's going to do and even more recently spoke of talks with the Caps and contract offers.

Maybe it's optimism but I expect him to come over and not really be that tempted to become a KHL mercenary. If he stays there I think he stays with Traktor.

Millhaus 11-25-2011 11:13 AM

Honestly if at this stage of his life his drive to make the last ruble overshadows his drive to test himself in the best league in the world then I'd rather he stayed in Russia.

That being said the impression I have gotten is that he wants to test himself in the NHL next season and I expect him to do that. Now what kind of ELC will he and his agent be able to wrangle out of the Caps? I don't know but I don't expect it to get to the point where he won't come over because the Caps won't give him the deal he wants because the ELC details are already set and known to all involved.

Dirtbag59 11-25-2011 12:04 PM

See this is why you can't trade Ovechkin. Getting Kuzy at 26 was an absolute steal, however without our Russian captain he would be more likely to just stay in Russia until his rights were traded to a team of his liking.

TheFountainhead 11-25-2011 12:42 PM

^Having Ovechkin is definitely a significant advantage over other clubs in attempting to lure over young Russians and other free agents for that matter, but the Caps also have a number of other things that make them attractive in the eyes of people in the hockey world. They play in a major market and in a very recognizable city, we're a very competitive team that has the potential to remain so for quite some time, we have first-rate facilities and tremendous exposure nationally and internationally (due to Ovechkin in large part, but also due to some of the other young talent that we've assembled), a very involved and dedicated owner (involved from a networking perspective), we have a very proactive management team that's developing the reputation for being very good at picking and developing young talent and we have an easy commute to the White House should we ever win a championship .

Many of those things probably aren't in the front of Kuznetsov's mind right now, but I'm sure he's heard positive things about the organization beyond simply having Ovechkin, and at the very least, since he's an NHL 12 player that plays with the Caps, I'm sure he's noticed that our overall team rating is quite high relative to most other teams in the league!

Helpoing 11-25-2011 01:50 PM

Having Ovi is great, but Kuzya's WJC teammate and friend Orlov is also playing with the Caps and don't underestimate that fact. In his recent interview Zhenya said that the deal is ready, only his signature is still missing. He will come next season, no doubt.

Drake1588 11-25-2011 02:11 PM

That's great news. Thanks.
