Russ Courtnall was so cool

I`m sure many of us here remember Russ Courtnall ... he was my 1st ever favourite player.

For those that don`t, the guy was blazing fast ... maybe it was because I was young, but I don`t recall seeing a habs player skate as fast as him ever since.

He was also oozing rebellness ... apparently he used to smoke cigs and was quoted once for saying it`s the reason why he was so fast.

I remember a few girls in my class used to think he was a stud.

He had a bit of Jesse from Full house thing going on...

A glimpse of his coolness :

Nice to see bruins fans appreciate our players from the past.

knuck 11-24-2011 01:42 PM

We are in the exact same boat on this one.

I was 5-6 years old when I first started watching hockey, and I always say my 1st favorite player was also #6 Russ Courtnall. He's the reason why the #6 became my favorite number as a kid.

smon 11-24-2011 01:49 PM

Probably as important for his trade history to the club! Kordic for Courtnall was pretty good. Courtnall for Bellows, too.

Shame about Kordic though.

Patty Roy 11-24-2011 01:49 PM

He was super fast...AND we ripped off the Leafs to get him (John Kordic).

CoolasprICE did what he did. We all know he did it. It's over now though, and I was one of the main people to call him on it in previous threads so call it hypocrisy if you like, but it's over now. Let it go. Stop trying to run one of the last quality posters out of this forum.

What he did was silly, and funny and dumb all at the same time. It was a knee jerk reaction of a passionate fan. We're all guilty of doing this at least once or twice in the past with the team, players etc and we've all been wrong before. I understand his mistake () was a pretty glaring one, but he still loves this team and his only intent was to get a high draft pick.

Can we all just let it go now? The guy can't make a thread about anything without having it thrown in his face still? I understand this happens all the time and even I do it to people but imo he's always been a quality poster up until that incident. I think we should just leave it be.

?!

I clearly missed something

Gros Bill 11-24-2011 02:34 PM

"Le chevreuil", as Pat Burns called him. I still laugh at that one. Put it this way: I miss Pat Burns more than Russ Courtnall.

lol Me too.

On Courtnall, he was a steal for the Habs. Burns put him alongside Carbonneau and all of the sudden we had a wicked two-way shut down line. Once Courtnall got some real coaching other than the crap he got in Toronto he became a solid two way player.

Amazingly, we traded him for Bellows who was one of the big three when we won the cup in 93. Courtnall was a fav. of mine when he was with the Habs too.

I don't want to get into it. Most people know what I'm talking about. :help:

Bellows was magical that year!

I use to think the same way about Yvan Cournoyer. I was 6 years old and thought he was next to God.

Courtnall became my favorite Hab instently! I remember even adding #6 to my Habs hat.. I met him in 1990 and i still have a pic with him... (i was 12 at the time)

He was lightning fast with a good shot.... He was called le Chevreuil because of his speed and he was a bit scared to go into traffic....

We got him for Kordic and then traded him for Bellows.....

His biggest goal was the one he scored against Harford in double OT in round #1 of the 1992 playoffs!

That Habs Fan 11-24-2011 04:15 PM

I was born a Habs fan in 1984 (dad was a fan). My very first Habs jersey (which I still own) has a number 6 on it because Russ was my favourite Hab at the time.

I will always think of this goal when I think of him:

Thats one of my favourite bob cole calls. I dont remember the game at all, but my very first favourite players were Richer, Courtnall, and Roy. It was a year where richer and courtnall were neck and neck with each other in terms of goals, although I dont remember if one of them eventually pulled away from the other.

Russ was just a friggin speed demon. Both courtnalls were fast but russ had an extra gear. Geoff had more edge to his game though.

I think I have way too many posters on ignore.

The good thing about the ignore feature is that I find the boards fun and entertaining... as opposed to highly irritating. :)

Courtnall?

Yeah... He left before the 93 cup... Bellows was awesome.

Lafleurs Guy 11-24-2011 09:56 PM

I'll never forget the ripoff trade. So awesome...

RussCourtnallsGhost 11-24-2011 10:04 PM

I approve.

My dad took me to my first hockey game when I was a kid, and the first thing I saw was Russ Courtnall whip a wrist shot and shatter the glass during the pre-game skate. I wore #6 for the rest of my life!

Also, I follow him on Twitter

FF de Mars 11-24-2011 11:29 PM

I remember Courtnall's wrap around goals in nhl '93 ! The goalie had difficulty with lateral mouvements lol. You guys remember Al Iafrate's powerful shot in nhl '94 ?

Kimota 11-24-2011 11:42 PM

He brought so much excitement to this team and helps us win. But after a while his game became too obvious for other teams and was easily shutdown because he was too one-dimensional. But i'll always remember his first few years when he was on that kid line.

I actually ignore people who talk about their ignore list

lol...

well, ya... i guess it was a bit shameless to go on the B's board and wish them luck in beating-us.... or, it was the ultimate anti-jinx ever... we did pretty well since.

Personaly I have never put anybody on my ignore list in any boards on the net. I think it's a weak trait of character and I like discussions too much for that, I encourage the idea of everybody having a say with a varitey of opinions. If it wouldn't be the case message boards would be pretty boring.

beowulf 11-25-2011 05:48 AM

Was my favorite player until he got replaced with Kirk Muller and he was preceded by Mats Naslund. I still have Courtnall's rookie card!

Same here. Still wear #6 to this day!
