Boudreau and Maurice Fired!

Quote:

ARLINGTON, Va. -- The Washington Capitals have fired coach Bruce Boudreau, who won 200 games faster than any coach in modern NHL history but stumbled regularly in the playoffs despite a talented lineup featuring two-time league MVP Alex Ovechkin.

Boudreau was replaced by former Capitals captain Dale Hunter, who was scheduled to lead Monday's practice and make his debut behind the bench Tuesday night when Washington hosts the St. Louis Blues to begin a three-game homestand.

Hired four years ago, Boudreau went 201-88-40 in the regular season with the Capitals but just 17-20 in the playoffs. This season he tried a new approach, emphasizing accountability and the willingness to bench his star players -- team captain Ovechkin included -- as punishment for subpar performances.

Beefy Edit:

Finally. He lost his bench and thus, his job.

decadentia 11-28-2011 07:44 AM

I was kind of hoping he'd never be fired.

GKJ 11-28-2011 07:52 AM

I'm more surprised by who the replacement is than Boudreau himself getting fired.

Somehow, Paul Maurice still has a job.

No worries Bruce, Frosty the Snowman will hire you to play him this Christmas.

RJ8812 11-28-2011 08:08 AM

ahhh Dale Hunter.....the biggest POS to ever play in the NHL is back

Paul Maurice does not have a power house.

dingbathero 11-28-2011 08:26 AM

Columbus will pick up Bordeau?

They would be smart to do so.....

PhillyFlying 11-28-2011 08:37 AM

a team with a diva reputation they're trying to shake and a weak-minded coach who lost the bench...it makes sense. BB did a lot to restore respectability to the caps and helped ovechkin blossom into the player he is today.

but definitely time to move on.

GKJ 11-28-2011 08:51 AM

RT @DarrenDreger: 1 coach down. Could there be 2 today? Rumours suggest Paul Maurice will be replaced by Milwaukee's Kirk Muller. Interesting day.

Hmmm, so maybe not.

phillyfanatic 11-28-2011 09:06 AM

AWESOME! I got Ovechkin in the hockey pool, unleash the beast Hunter.

GKJ 11-28-2011 09:08 AM

So, uh, somehow Joe Sacco still has a job?

JXC 11-28-2011 10:04 AM

I remember when Boudreau was The Model.

His hit on Lafontaine was brutal as well. I think Hunter was quoted as saying he never knew a goal was scored and therefore didnt hear the whistle...ha ha ha right. Lafontaine was just celebrating because he didn't score

It's the Day of Long Knives for coaches. I wonder if anybody else will fail make it through the week?

Oddly enough, also one of the biggest POS ever behind an OHL bench.

I am a bit disappointed in the timing. London is in Kitchener for the annual Teddy Bear Toss game next week, and I might have to resort to aiming for the ice instead of the bench this year!

that will change if the Flyers fire Laviolette and replace him with Berube.

If they're too soft and fluffy, they don't carry well.

Nothing like a soft, fluffy Bricky Bear to get your point across.

Not if Paddington takes a little pre-game bath in liquid nitrogen.

Hunter is #1 on my all-time list of most hated players. What were his notable misdemeanors as coach?

drownedsailors 11-28-2011 12:50 PM

God I ****ing hate Hunter

He's just a dick behind the bench. Applauding the refs when they make a call against one of his players, sending players out to "accidentally" injure an opposing player, that kind of thing.

I will give him credit though - London's 2005 championship team was filled with all-stars, a lot of whom had been drafted and signed by their parent clubs, and he had them all set their egos aside (not easy to do with teenaged boys) and had them playing with a single focus and as a team. If he can do the same with the Caps, they're going to be a scary team to play against.

The vacation is over in Washington. It'll be interesting to see how Ovy and Semin respond.
