Hopefully for cheaper. He's been a great Sabre, but not consistently a great player, IMO.

Rhett4 11-30-2011 10:34 PM

I saw that earlier...and it completely slipped my mind. I'd like to see them bring him back but at a reduced cap hit. I'm a huge Goose supporter, but his game has slipped in recent years (even if his point totals haven't). He hasn't been nearly as physical as in his younger years. If they could get him for half a million less a year (which I think would be 1.8), I'd be happy.

I'd have to agree. A small cut would go a long way. Like 15-20%.

Meh. Great in the dot. When he skates he looks like he's running on a freshly waxed hardwood floor in new socks.

Personally, I could do without him once his contract is up but wouldn't mind him as the 4th line C.

3 years, $5 million or somewhere in that area seems like the right deal to me.

sba 11-30-2011 10:46 PM

Done with him, brings almost nothing besides faceoffs anymore. If he's willing to sign for what McCormick got, fine...otherwise...see ya.

struckbyaparkedcar 11-30-2011 10:48 PM

He absolutely does not deserve a mid season extension unless the cap hit is under 2 million.

Same here. I think a cap hit between $1.5-1.8 sounds about right for him.

Stone87 11-30-2011 10:54 PM

I have a hard time imagining him taking much of a pay cut with a guy like Talbot getting an average of 1.75 over 5 years.

ZZamboni 11-30-2011 10:59 PM

I've been rather tired of Gaustad for a couple years now. But I also see why he's on team. He has become less and less of a factor for awhile now. He'll be 30 in February, so I think for what he does bring, 1 year contracts for him from here on out. Cap it of no more than 1.5 mil. If he wants 2+ years, walk away. I think we can find SOMEONE to play center on the 4th line. He's an asset...barely. Just my O.

This. Love him or hate him or whatever, Goose is going to get more in the open market. Hell, Tim Connelly did, and lots of people hated him here.

Let him, then.

With any luck Gaustad will sign elsewhere. He is a 4th liner with no offensive game.Deserves no more then 1.75 a year, I would offer him a 2/3.5 deal and no more.

But he is one of Ruff's pets and I could see Regier keep around the Rochester crew even longer

And for all the hate Connolly got for his lack of playoff scoring, Gaustad has never scored a postseason goal...now THAT is the pathetic streak.

Timbo Slice 11-30-2011 11:13 PM

No way he should get a raise on that. At most, give him the exact same cap hit as what he has now. 3 or 4 years.

My point is simply that expecting someone on the current roster to taking a "hometown discount" is sorta ridiculous. As is the notion of getting a lateral or upgrade at the position needing filling at that cheap price.

I'm glad the Sabres have broken out of that mentality and I'd say they did pretty well in the off-season. Obviously, Leino is a bust and a half, but to get talent, you have to be the highest bidder to reel in the talent...

Or tank for like, 7 years and draft in the top 3 constantly and get a little extra help in certain drafts from Mr. Bettman via connections through your team's owner like a certain team did that plays in Pennsylvania. I'll give you a hint - The city and team name both start with the same letter :sarcasm:

Stone87 11-30-2011 11:31 PM

I'm not sure what people's issue with Paul is?

I would like it if Gaustad hit a little harder for his size, though he is far too slow to really crush people.

He doesn't fight a lot because he actually has a job to do on the ice. People might not realize this, but it's actually hard to win faceoffs if your hands are swollen from beating skulls.

His offensive numbers have been fairly consistent year to year.

He is one of (if not the best) penalty killers on the team.

Overall I have no real issue with the guy. With so many problem players on this team I can't believe so many people have an issue with Gaustad of all people.

sabresfan129103 11-30-2011 11:37 PM

He's good at faceoffs. I was disappointed with him after the 1st Boston game, but he went with Lucic(reluctantly I'm sure) in the 2nd game. He's good on the PK. He is overpaid a little bit right now. If he can get his point production up a little I'd be ok with 3 years and 6 million.

gallagt01 11-30-2011 11:53 PM

What's Talbot making?

Talbot > Gaustad. He should be the benchmark.

I'm a Goose fan in that he goes to battle every night for the Sabres, he's a leader, and he wins draws. That said, he does NOT deserve a raise and deserves a pay cut as far as I'm concerned.

Good to see Darcy negotiating mid season.

Stockey 11-30-2011 11:55 PM

Goose is one of my favorite Sabres. Glad to hear he is being extended. 1.5 - 2.0 mil (at most) seems right.

I don't see what makes Talbot better than Gaustad. In fact I'd say he's worse because he isn't any good at faceoffs.

Take a look at Talbot's numbers in the playoffs and compare them to Gaustad's.

That reason alone makes Talbot better than Goose.

Goose consistently scores 12 goals in the regular season and 0 in the playoffs. Pay the man.
