lol this trade

Doctor Drej 12-02-2011 06:29 PM

Kostka is interesting. Had 16 goals and 54 points total in the AHL with the Rampage last year.

CommunistDayKare 12-02-2011 06:43 PM

I like it

Right handed too.

newham89 12-02-2011 07:25 PM

Vernace was never going to be good enough, Wright was rushed by previous management. Kostka seems interesting I suppose and it gives an extra forward place in the Admirals that Panik can fill more often. I suppose this is a good deal. Hard to get excited about a minor league deal though.

TBLHoser 12-02-2011 07:51 PM

AHL fodder....

chasespace 12-02-2011 08:16 PM

If one of them replaces Gervais then it gets a little sweeter.

Yzerplan 12-02-2011 11:00 PM

At first I was like, why the hell did we trade for a 36 year old defenseman? lol Read about this trade on TSN's website and it lists Kostka as 36 years old, instead of 26 years old.

Obviously this trade has very little, if any impact on either team at the NHL level.

Rschmitz 12-03-2011 12:29 AM

Not sure what we got, but at a glance, not happy about losing Wright. 6-4 21 year old with good speed who scored 47 points last season in the AHL.

Wouldn't call that stunted, as his defensive game has also improved and he has slowly bulked up. He has had a rough season so far though.

Felonious Python 12-03-2011 06:10 AM

Good thing we locked down Hedman.

If Wright's development wasn't stunted by the last guys. It certainly will be now.

D Evan Oberg (born 1988, 6-0, 191lbs, shoots L)

Both non-drafted defensemen

Evan Oberg
Shoots: Left
Height: 6-0
Weight: 191 lbs
Birthdate: 1988-02-16

http://www.hockeysfuture.com/prospects/evan_oberg (6.0 D)

Talent Analysis

Aside from his offensive instincts, Oberg’s value stems from his ability to make a good first pass and to effectively read plays as they develop. He is a slender, puck-moving defenseman who has shown potential both at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and at the AHL level. Unfortunately, his season was cut short by a neck injury shortly after being traded to the Panthers.
Future

Oberg can become a middle-pair defenseman in the NHL if he achieves a full recovery from his injury, and can get his development back on track. He will spend more time at the AHL level, working on positioning and defensive play while continuing to sharpen his offense. Once fully recovered, Oberg is still a couple of years away from playing in the big leagues.

Quote:

ASSETS: Is a sound puck-moving defenseman with solid offensive instincts. He's also good at positional defense, due to an active stick.
FLAWS: Lacks ideal size for the NHL game and struggles when lined up against bigger forwards, since he's not much of a physical defender.
CAREER POTENTIAL: Puck-moving depth defenseman.

Mike Kostka
Shoots: Right
Height: 6-2
Weight: 210 lbs
Birthdate: 1985-11-28

http://www.hockeysfuture.com/prospects/mike_kostka (5.5 C)
Quote:

Kostka served as a team captain for his college team, and was amongst the team leaders in plus/minus rating and scoring. He has good ability on the power play, having led all NCAA defensemen in that category in his career.
Future

Still developing in Portland, but may have a tough time moving up the ladder.

Quote:

ASSETS: Has good size for the blueline position. Is a decent puck-mover who limits his mistakes when on the ice.
FLAWS: Isn't a very physical defender. His offensive game, while decent in the AHL, is somewhat limited for the highest level.
CAREER POTENTIAL: Depth defenseman.

Toronto, Colorado, and Dallas were among those scouting in Norfolk, according to a source.
More to come?

I would count on it. All those scouts at the NHL games were probably there for a reason, too.

This is also why it sucks to be an affiliate.

Rschmitz 12-03-2011 11:51 AM

We could have signed Kostka and Oberg this offseason I believe.

But finding a team that will take Vernace is just one you don't turn down.

Both Kostka and Oberg are RFA. It's sort of bad manners to send out an offer sheet, IMO.

Oberg's got a huge cap hit though. 1.5m if he's called up. He's in the last year of his ELC, so no performance bonuses on the next contract, meaning a cap hit -1 million.

What's interesting is that you can blame Matt Gilroy for getting Oberg such a large contract.

Now we has them all.

Still All In 12-03-2011 05:16 PM

This gives Norfolk 10 rostered defenders. I don't know how the hell you split time between 10 defenders and I can't help but think this may mean a callup is coming.

Who is going to call someone up? TB's got 7 healthy.

The good thing is our D prospects are all playing.

Radko Gudas - 21/23
Charles Landry - 15/23 (started the season injured)
Scott Jackson - 15/23 (started the season injured)

Jeff Dimmen - 19/23
Kevin Quick - 11/23
Richard Petiot - 6/23
Jean-Philippe Cote - 6/23

I don't think we have Quick's rights anymore. He's a Norfolk (BriseBois) signing, and SFY didn't offer him a QO.

Yeah that's why I separated the 4. Our only D prospects in Norfolk are Gudas, Barberio, Landry, and Jackson. We also have the rights for Richard Petiot, but he's not a prospect.
