The flying adventures of Evan Oberg

Welp, lets see how this goes.

Doctor Drej 12-06-2011 02:26 PM

This feels vaguely familiar. Kind of like 2008-2009, keep calling up Dmen to replace the already not so good Dmen because they're hurt. Then the callups get hurt...etc.

VanTampaFan 12-07-2011 02:13 AM

Evan Oberg is seriously not that bad. I wasn't super thrilled when gillis traded him to Florida however the move made sense at the time. From what I recall of him he wasn't flashy, but he was also not a huge defensive liability. Standing out as a young Dman 9/10 is not in a way like Doughty or Subban does. I recall him being good at moving the puck which would fit into the TBM system well enough.

Don't expect him to change the franchise, but its not like hes a 29 yr old journeyman AHLer

Sear91 12-07-2011 10:14 AM

Its worth a shot, maybe he surprises us.

BoltSTH 12-07-2011 10:49 AM

Looks like Lundin 2.0. Sound defensively but struggles against bigger forwards.

Lightning sent D Oberg back to Norfolk, so either he needs to play rather than sit with Tampa Bay or Pavel Kubina (lower body) is ready.

BoltSTH 12-09-2011 11:37 AM

Kubina hasn't been ready for 5 years

If Hedman is hurt, we're officially without any top pairing D men. Do we get some kind of award for playing with no #1/2 in our lineup that I'm not aware of?

Nail Yakupov.

zeykshade 12-12-2011 03:16 PM

Haha, that'd still leave us without any top pairing D to play with Hedman. Seeing MAB and Gilroy eat up #3/4 minutes literally makes me grimace.

Would sfy actually take nail? I'd bet a trade down for two top ten picks and he snags two of the better dmen

Nail is Russian, and if the draft back in June is any indication, SFY wouldn't hesitate to add to the stockpile of Russians.

#tblightning annouced D Evan Oberg sent back to @NorfolkAdmirals as he racks up the frequent flyer miles

Why? What is he supposed to be learning with these callups?

He gets to practice with the team and work with the coaches.

X0X0A0 12-13-2011 05:13 PM

Making room for Kulda.

snowden 12-13-2011 06:20 PM

Evan "Yo-Yo" Oberg

Bolt32 12-13-2011 06:35 PM

Yeah, I don't understand this decision. If your going to call the kid up, at least give him a game to see what he can do. Would it really hurt to let him slot in for Kubina, or one of our other defensemen for a game? Don't really think so. We cannot even buy a win right now, so why not give him a try if you call him up?

LightningStrikes 12-17-2011 11:37 AM

Guess who's back up again?

zeykshade 12-17-2011 11:41 AM

Yo-Yoberg. This has crossed the border of absurd.

Bolts265 12-17-2011 11:48 AM

For cripes sakes give the guy a game already.

I doubt it's the most absurd.

I think we're trying to have our cake and eat it too. Get him training with the NHL team, for an NHL role, but not while playing NHL games. Methinks SFY is pretty high on Oberg, and feels he's very nearly ready to play for them, but not...quite...yet.
