Ty Rattie Watch

I see no Ty Rattie thread. In light of his hat trick tonight and taking over sole possession of the goal scoring lead for all of Canadian juniors, shouldn't we have one?

30GP, 31G, 27A, 58Pts.

Emerson Etem, a year older, has 28G in 31GP in the WHL.
Tyler Toffoli, also a year older, has 26G in 28GP in the OHL.
Zack O'Brien, also a year ahead, has 29G in 33GP in the Q.

Bartschi certainly has helped boost his production some, but Rattie can clearly produce pts w/o Bartschi. If paired with a strong setup man, this kid should produce.

Another game tomorrow (12/7) against Prince George.

Good thread idea.

bleedblue1223 12-07-2011 07:13 AM

He's really making trade feel pretty good. He looks like a huge steal if he is able to put on the muscle that is needed.

execwrite 12-07-2011 08:05 AM

Definitely needs his own thread.

If he puts together a full season like this, could he be competing for an NHL spot next year?

I don't think so. Physically, he is not ready at all and another season in juniors would be better unless he's eligible for the AHL next season? Rattie is definitely looking like a steal, now if we could somehow get Bartschi too...

Quaz 12-07-2011 02:16 PM

Let's hope he makes Canada's WJC team this year, because he will still be eligible next year as well. I would expect that he will play one more year of Juniors for sure.

bluemandan 12-07-2011 02:18 PM

Sounds like he will pair well with Schwartz....

1 goal tonight in a 3-2 loss.

Picked up another goal tonight (SH).

P.S. Portland's game against Vancouver this Friday will be broadcast on the NHL Network on Saturday at 11am EST.

Nice, thanks for the heads up!

Rattie's on the WHL break til Dec 28, but he goes into it leading all of Canadian juniors in goals:

Rattie (18yo, WHL) – 33G, 33GP
Gauthier (20yo, QMJHL) – 31G, 37GP
O'Brien (19yo, QMJHL) – 31G, 39GP
Toffoli (19yo, OHL) – 30G, 31GP
Etem (19yo, WHL) – 30G, 34GP
Shinkaruk (17yo, WHL) – 30G, 36GP

As for points, Rattie has 62pts in 33GP. There are three guys in the Q who have more, but the guy with 4 more points did it in 6 more games, the guy with 2 more points did it in 4 more games, the guy with 1 more point did it in 7 more games.

In the OHL, undrafted 19yo Tanner Pearson (who made WJC) has 66pts in 30GP. In the WHL, 19yo Mark Stone has 65pts in 33GP. So Rattie is officially 6th but more realistically 3d due to the Q games cushion.

Hat trick plus an assist for Rattie last night. Now leads the WHL in points (though Stone, who's tearing it up for Team Canada) has fewer games played.

Good article on Rattie. Here's an excerpt.

Quote:

“Ty is the best goal-scorer in the league, but it’s more than that,” said linemate Brad Ross, whose hat trick Friday night was aided by Rattie’s two helpers. “He has a complete game. He backchecks, he forechecks.

“He is probably the best player in our league. When he straps on the skates, he leads by example out there.”

I watched a lot of Hawk games last season and didn’t see this coming. How has Rattie gone from just another good player to, in the words of coach Mike Johnston, “an elite level”?

“The biggest thing is confidence,” Rattie said. “Your third year in the league, you know what to expect. It’s a 72-game grind. My confidence is flying high right now.”

Nice to read THIS! Maybe it's good that The Blues had to swap 1st choices with Colorado.

CarvinSigX 01-07-2012 04:33 PM

What is his upside? Unfortunately, I haven't seen this kid play too much. Are we talking a 30+ goal guy if he reaches his potential?

PocketNines 01-07-2012 04:54 PM

He's a pure sniper, elite release. He's 6'0" so he just needs to put on weight which he will, as he's only 18.

The best part of that article is the writer, who has clearly covered Portland for decades, talking about not seeing this huge step forward this season coming. The hard work, hockey sense, backchecking, forechecking, all stemming from his experience in Blues camp and seeing what he'd have to do with his game to climb over guys and make the roster. Driven kid. Real shame he didn't make Canada's WJC roster. If he puts up 70 goals in junior this year, what's he gonna put up next year? He can't play in Peoria.

Have you watched enough of Skinner to make a comparison regarding their shots?

I haven't. Rattie has deadly hands, the issue is going to be skating, physicality, two-way game. Very encouraged about Rattie's progress. Will be very interesting to see how much he's improved year to year next Blues camp.

Wonder if he can earn a 9-game look next year so that he can go back to Portland again with ever-higher confidence. Roster looks to be overloaded at wing so unlikely, but if there's an injury...

stlweir 01-07-2012 06:00 PM

Great article. How about Turnbull and Currie, two former Blues as players who have scored at a goal a game pace or better for Portland. Love to see Rattie score at least 60.

Alklha 01-08-2012 12:01 AM

Thanks for the article.

Rattie got another couple of assists tonight, but not a good night overall as he was a -3 in an 8-4 loss.

stlweir 01-13-2012 08:07 AM

1 goal, 2 assists in his last game. Portland has games tonight and tomorrow night.
