lol the things that bothered me the most from today's presser:

-how teflon pierre kept deflecting gagnon's question about his own accountability
-how he backtracked on his summer comments of the goal being 'the habs to become a top 10 echelon team in the NHL' now it's 'the league is so competitive we just need to make the playoffs and anything happens' - which was the garbage spewed by gainey for many years

habsjunkie2* 12-17-2011 09:40 PM

I was never a JM fan, but this is what I didn't want. I think Cunneyworth will be fine, but I was against this kind of reaction, if a change was to be made, it needed to be sweeping change from the top. PG/BG are every bit to blame for this teams performance as the coach, imo, more so.

Crimson Skorpion 12-17-2011 09:54 PM

Jacques Martin was asked what he thought about the team losing, following his firing.

His answer:

Fire a coach with almost two decades of NHL experience, replace him with someone who has never coached an NHL game?

JM isnt the reason we were losing

We are not the 1st team to do that

and why they get along so well... like minds think alike...

that first point, is exactly why like him or hate him, there is something to be said for the kind of honesty and accountability that a guy like B.Burke is all about.

a manager with balls has no problem admitting when they have made a mistake. at no point have we, or will we likely, see Gauthier show that kind of character.

deflect, avoid, rephrase...

Montreal Canadiens, as a storied franchise, deserve so much better. I hope that Molson is cut from the kind of cloth that recognizes that.

Brodie 12-17-2011 10:23 PM

do you guys think a coach will be hired this season or is it supposed to be Cunneyworth for the rest of the year?

Bylsma?
Boucher?

All great coaches start somewhere and we seem to find the most of them

Aspirine 12-17-2011 10:29 PM

I still remember when they fired Demers for Tremblay

Not the same thing I know, only thing Tremblay ever coached was the hairs on his toothbrush

Le CH 12-17-2011 11:58 PM

To those rejoicing at JM being fired... lets see how you feel with the rest of the year because I truely believe he made this team achieve more than the sum of its parts. I get this feeling that things are only going to get worse with him gone - we shall see.

TheRedKnight 12-18-2011 12:04 AM

Lets hope Cunningworth can right some of the wrongs on this team.

As for Martin I'm thankful for the time he spent here. When he first came in, there was hope that an experienced coach could instill a system, and the fact that his Ottawa teams had a feared offense was encouraging. To my surprise he was another defensive specialist, it worked for a while, and got the team deep into the playoffs once. But it has been ineffective for the last year and a half, and his unwillingness to change his approach meant his job was at stake.

Nashy 12-18-2011 01:05 AM

Gionta, Markov and Gomez on the shelf....what's that about 18.5 million dollar in salary?

JM was screwed when Gomez decided to regress into crap, and when Gauthier decided to waste 6 million dollars on Markov.

It's a miracle that JM has this team within 2 points of a playoff spot with the injuries and personnel that he's been forced to use.

I didn't care for him as a coach, but you can't say he that he hasn't made this team competitive.

I wish Cunneyworth well, but he certainly has his work cut out for him.

I think the habs don't have any better option available right now so RC till the end of the season. If somone perfect hits the market (e.g Lindy Ruff :D) I think they will snatch him up.

Yes what a waste it is to sign your best dman. What kind of a lynchmob would have been outside the bell had he not signed him and Markov regained form on another team? He made a decision with the available facts. Maybe he lost this gamble who knows. Markov could come back and be dominant and you would skulk away into the shadows wouldn't you?

MasterDecoy 12-18-2011 01:11 AM

i've defended martin time and time again, and even though he made some stupid decision, i feel the habs were better off with him. gauthier deserves far more blame than JM. this team over achieved the last few years and he was a big reason why.

at the end, i don't really care whether he stayed or not. my guess is the habs will fail, hard. the good news is: no more 'fire martin' in every ****ing post.

my prediction: we suck even more, and miss the playoffs altogether.

Habsterix* 12-18-2011 01:11 AM

Poor Martin won't be touching EI for a while... he still has a year and a half to his contract and with his $1M bonus, he'll have to try to survive with $2.5M until the end of next year. Hope he'll be okay. Anyone want to raise a trust fund? :sarcasm:

WhiskeySeven 12-18-2011 01:16 AM

Now the Martin apologists crawl out of the woodwork??

Nice to see some changes happening, Gauthier is a patient and fair man. He gave every impetus to Jacques to do his job right and he couldn't. He fired Pearn to show he means business and Jacques straightened out a bit (forecheck was better) but then he lost it again. Gauthier gains many, many points in my book.

This team should take advantage of its talent and speed, this team should unleash its flexible offensive lines, this team should be drawing penalties and scoring on them. We'll see it happen, with Cunneyworth or not.

It's going to get ugly. For once we had a coach with experience. :shakehead

God I hope we're wrong but I agree. They looked like they thought they were all Mario Lemieux out there today.

Don't worry, the next coach will suffer the exact same fate. It's just too bad we were in a position to fight through these injuries and actually create long term stability in this organization and they ****ed it up. Idiots.

neofury* 12-18-2011 02:32 AM

Is anyone else happy this happened right after the twins left for vaca? Hilarious. When they get back they'll be like "lolwut?".
