Larsson to miss upcoming games to attend Funeral

Devils’ prized rookie Adam Larsson probably will miss two games to return to Sweden over Christmas to attend funeral services for his grandmother and “reload,” The Post has learned.Larsson may head home after the Rangers visit Newark on Tuesday, and could miss two games, a visit by the Capitals on Dec. 23 and the trip to Carolina on Dec. 26.

Larsson lived next door to his late grandmother and said he was very close to her.

The Devils’ fourth-overall draft pick in June, Larsson said he will use the break to refresh his game, which has slipped in the past month. This is his first lengthy stint in North America, and he said he will welcome a chance to go home.
I don't think his game slipped at all, he just needed to adjust which he has done in last month. So while I see a reason why he needs to go back to Sweden for his grandmothers funeral, I don't see why he needs to be "refreshed".

This makes Kovaltroll sad

And no suspension according to TG as i just posted in the post game thread.

Might as well post it here too:

Hearing that there is no hearing planned by NHL Player Safety dept. for Erik Cole's hit on Adam Larsson last night.

Not official that there's definitely no supplementary discipline coming for Cole, but it's very much looking like that will be case.

Though head was principal point of contact, it has to be clear that head was intended target too.

No hearing doesn't mean NHL didn't look at the play very closely. It did. It always does.

Sad to hear about his grandma.

I think his play offensively has definitely picked up, but compared to the beginning of the year, he's definitely gotten worse defensively. It seems like he's getting dangled and/or beat to the outside 3-4 times a game now.

no, his game HAS slipped, there is no need to make excuses for the guy. Other than last night, Larsson really hasn't played well and this trip home could be a good way for him to rest up and recharge his game

his PPG for december is on pace with his PPG from November. His +/- has gone from E in November to -5 for December...and if a -5 is the sole indication of 'slipping' then I don't know what to say.

has he been burned a lot? yeah, that has happened the ENTIRE season.

CerebralGenesis 12-18-2011 10:28 AM

i think the no suspension is a joke. Cole is a dirtbag

Never fun to hear about family dying, and a few days off will do him good anyway. Hopefully we can slip Tallinder in and be ok. Caps are struggling and Carolina is bad this year. Two games we should be ok with anyway. It gives Taormina more time to play too.

I just don't see how going to his grandmothers funeral will help him to recharge.

And that his play has slipped is no real surprise. The NHL schedule is much tighter than the SEL one. Sure he is putting up more points but he also is making more mistakes on defense.

Better that he's missing games for this reason than because of a concussion.

AfroThunder396 12-18-2011 10:32 AM

Sad to hear about his grandmother, but perhaps this break is for the best. People forget he had to fly across an ocean as a 19 year old and move away from his family. This is the longest he's ever been away from his family in his life, I'm sure he's homesick as hell.

dpedan2 12-18-2011 10:32 AM

whew!

When I read the thread title I thought it was for a concussion. Too bad about his grand mother though.

Yeah, I was worried that's what the reason was.

In terms of his game 'slipping', all I know is we haven't had a defenseman making the offensive plays he's been making, i.e. the stretch pass to Clarkson last night or the pass to Parise for the tip in the night before, in quite some time. He's doing just fine.

Rhodes 81 12-18-2011 10:46 AM

he's been bad defensively, and that's just a fact. i suspect that if he hadn't just been drafted 4th overall this entire board would be all over him.

also didn't his grandmother die like 2 weeks ago? is it common in sweden for funerals to be this long after death?

ILikeItVeryMuch* 12-18-2011 10:47 AM

No hearing for Cole?

Are they ****ing serious.

Consdering his mistakes, he is barely 19 and has made some great plays recently.

Saugus 12-18-2011 10:51 AM

I'm surprised that there's no suspension for Cole, but whatever. I'm just glad Larsson's alright.

ILikeItVeryMuch* 12-18-2011 10:53 AM

You are responsible for your body in a situation like that, the fact that their is no hearing is absurd.

But again, we are the Devils.

This is the same league that gives Toronto goals without even going to the war room.

Jersey Man 12-18-2011 11:00 AM

Sad to hear that for Larsson. I'm very close to my grandma and don't know what I'd do when she is gone.

For those who say he is slipping, the death of his grandmother could be affecting his game, which I will go on the record to say I think he is doing okay. If he makes those kind of passes he'll get an assist every game.

i know that the fact that he's even in the nhl is impressive, but how many d-men that are good offensively but suck defensively are called 4th forwards, etc.

i just think some time off could do him well. maybe get his head back in it a little.

PacManNJD 12-18-2011 11:18 AM

Give him some time to grieve and recharge his batteries a bit.

He's played every single game this reason at barely 19 years old. Some time off will do him good.

Devilsfan92 12-18-2011 11:18 AM

Immediately thought it was concussion problems. Sad news about his grandmother.

It will be good I think, a nice break and feel refreshed.

No hearing at all for Cole? Mr. Consistency strikes again..

I think a big reason people aren't "all over him" is because, while he has had expected rookie hiccups defensively, he is still probably the best D man on the team right now. That is in part a testament to how good Larsson has been, but it's a much bigger testament to how bad the rest of the D is. With Greene out and now Larsson missing a couple, things could get really ugly.

That said, obviously I hold no qualms with a guy going to attend a funeral. I hope he takes his time, stays as long as he feels is necessary. Though it is a little disappointing that he won't be in the first game I go to this season...

Pretty much, I think 2 weeks is the average. You have 2 months at the most but the government wants it to change to 1 month.

Yes, its normal that the funeral is not within the very next few days in the nordic countries. usually 1-2 weeks.

Some well-deserved rest.
