OT - Happy Holidays?

I'm a Brit, so this is a term that's confused me for a while. Why is it that you all say 'Happy Holidays' rather than 'Merry Christmas'?

DeadPhish5858 12-20-2011 09:15 AM

Because its politically correct. Not everyone in the US celebrates Christmas.

Prongo 12-20-2011 09:32 AM

Yea there is Quanza and Hanakkuh that fall around the same time as Christmas. So we are politically correct like the post above said and just say happy Holidays! Greatest time of the year!

That makes little sense. It's not as though you're saying 'Happy Christmas and every other religious event sucks balls'.

The second post regarding Quanza and Hanukkah makes more sense, especially why we don't have it here. I literally have no idea what the first one is and there isn't a huge Jewish community in my part of the world.

IMO it has more to do with Hanukkah.

I don't care if a stranger wishes me a happy holidays; after all, for all they know I might be Jewish. But when a friend does it bothers me a little. They should know which holiday I celebrate.

Edit: "Political Correctness" is a big deal in the US. There's a drive to accept all cultures and never do or say anything to make anybody anywhere uncomfortable. I understand where it comes from, but it gets taken too far at times.

Not saying I agree with it, but that's how it is here. Everyone is afraid to say anything that is not politically correct.

shipwreck 12-20-2011 12:23 PM

MERRY CHRISTMAS! :yo:

I'm rushing right home and changing my Christmas cards to this. Thanks, 1865!

Report: Conlin Leaves Ahead Of Article

PHILADELPHIA - An online report says Philadelphia Daily News columnist Bill Conlin has left the newspaper over an article that is set to appear in the Inquirer.

Deadspin.com reports that the forthcoming Inquirer report includes child molestation allegations.

Deadspin reported according to a source that Conlin abruptly resigned Tuesday, although other media outlets are being told that Conlin "retired."

Conlin has hired an attorney to defend himself against the piece, according to the Deadspin report.

A longtime Phillies beat writer before becoming a columnist at the Daily News, Conlin made it into the Baseball Hall of Fame earlier this year as the 2011 J.G. Taylor Spink Award winner . He has also been a columnist for the Sporting News.

I think the biggest thing is Hanukkah (Chanukah? How the hell do you spell that anyway?), especially around here (Newton/Brookline have very large Jewish populations). And I think it's more a matter of companies saying "We want EVERYONE'S money", rather than "Oh, don't offend the <insert group here>."

Actually, looking up the "Happy Holidays" song on wikipedia indicates it dates to a 1942 Bing Crosby movie (Holiday Inn), and was sung in the movie on New Year's day. It was intended to cover multiple holidays throughout the year, so thus "Happy Holidays". :teach2: So it appears it didn't start out politically correct, and has been adapted over the years as we've accepted the fact that Jews and black people are humans too in this country. :D

And it's not like anyone could say the 1940s were exactly politically correct.

Bingo. Couldn't have said it better myself, word for word

I couldn't find the video game thread so I figured it'd work here. Does anyone here play OnLive?

Not sure where else to post this but I am cracking up at this. Friend of mine just sent it to me:

1865 12-21-2011 09:21 AM

Oh, we've got political correctness here too, that and the health and safety brigade are making everything difficult.

Just all a bit silly. I'm not religious at all but it's all such an effort to keep everyone happy. It's such a big thing nowadays that it's a little unreasonable to get wound up about.
