Matt Fraser

Hello Stars fans, i'm looking to draft Fraser in my fantasy ligue, He had great stats as an overager in the WHL last year ans sublime playoffs...

What can you say about him since this summer, the camp and the AHL? he's got already 16 goald in the AHL!

Hull Fan 12-30-2011 06:28 PM

Early reports were that his defense was suspect but I haven't heard a legit report about him since the first few weeks of the season. He seems to have a legit scoring touch. If he keeps that up he may be called up soon. Our injury problems have been on the back end but after Vincour, Fraser is 1st on my list of call ups.

Dr GLU 12-30-2011 10:37 PM

He has a lot of things you would look for. He's got decent size and goes to the dirty areas of the ice. He oozes character. He has a lightning release with a heavy, accurate shot.

However, he still has to develop in the defensive end. His first step and agility are below average. He also needs work on his puck handling.

I think he's still a little ways off because of his skating, personally.

Guess he'll get his shot against Anaheim.

Pretty impressive climb up the ladder.

Troy McClure 01-22-2012 05:44 PM

Put him in the top six. Maybe he can make something happen.

I think he better get atleast 14-15 minutes and a regular shift on the PP.

Fraser has earned this chance with excellent work in the AHL. I think he'll be a solid depth contributor on the Stars' 2nd or 3rd line for years to come.

CRSeven 01-22-2012 06:10 PM

Well deserved call up for Fraser.

I'd like to see him with Loui and Wandell.

MetalGodAOD* 01-22-2012 07:01 PM

Really excited to see him come up. He's a legit top 6 prospect that we nabbed for absolutely nothing. And he's a LW, which we desperately need. I think he'll be a regular on our team for years to come, but we'll see what he brings to the game. Looking forward to watching him develop.

Cin 01-22-2012 07:16 PM

This looks scary. ****** morale for the team in that room right now surely, and we turn into the Oilers by playing our top prospects. I just don't see this ending well. I REALLY hope I'm wrong.

glovesave_35 01-22-2012 07:17 PM

Tapping the mental excitement brakes over here...from a player development perspective I'm more interested in seeing how Fraser looks against NHL competition at this point than how much he can help a sinking ship. I'm also slightly worried that he will see token ice time and not be put in a position to score goals (i.e. Vincour playing these last couple of games on the 4th line, wtf?).

Troy McClure 01-22-2012 07:21 PM

Vincour plays on the 4th line because he has stone hands. He's had numerous chances and has disappointed each time. Too bad. Seems like a great guy.

I think we've been watching different players for the past couple of seasons.

Troy McClure 01-22-2012 07:29 PM

I'm pretty sure we've both watched him produce no offense at all for two seasons.

At an NHL level? He's producing chances. He's not completely flubbing them like Burish does.

Oh please. Giving a 21 year old who's near PPG in the AHL a call up mid season is no where close to "turning into the Oilers." Stop with the hyperbole.

Agreed. He's not going to save our team, but this is good for his development.

He's producing like a 4th lier if that's what you're trying to show.

Yeah I think the important thing to keep in mind is that this is just a neat chance for a guy having a nice season in the AHL to come up and play a few games with the big team. It's more for his benefit than anything else. Ideally he's back down in the AHL to finish out the season when the Stars get Benn and Ribeiro back and he wins a spot on the roster in training camp next season.

Troy McClure 01-22-2012 09:10 PM

Really, waiting to put Benn on IR and doing this call up now is a reaction to the total lack of offense the Stars are producing right now. Nieuwy is hoping to create a spark by infusing new blood.

piqued 01-22-2012 09:41 PM

He'll almost certainly only be up for this 1 game. They'll send him back down so he can participate in the AHL All-Star Game. Then Benn will come off IR.

That's exactly what it is.

Regarding Vincour, I'm not his biggest supporter but I think he has a future as an NHL player. My main concern with his role these last couple of games is basically, what's to lose by giving him better linemates than Dowell and TP? It's not really something worth spending time debating but as I was watching this bunch try to scrape together goals against Tampa it seemed kind of silly to not throw a bunch of different things at the wall and see if something sticks.

LatvianTwist 01-22-2012 10:04 PM

Vincour, to me, won't turn into anything but a very good 3rd liner. Maybe around Ott's production in terms of scoring, but I don't see anything more. He'll be good to have, but not a game breaker.

Fraser reminds me a lot of Ryder, just with great positioning instead of a great shot. Take away Stammer's one timer and speed, and he's a lot like him, too. If he can just get a bit faster and really work on his defensive game, he's got a bright future.

piqued 01-23-2012 03:05 PM

Apparently Fraser practiced on the 4th line, which seems about par for the course.

glovesave_35 01-23-2012 03:10 PM

Well that's nice. He'll get a good opportunity to show his scoring touch skating alongside deft playmaker and noted diabetic Toby Petersen.

piqued 01-23-2012 03:18 PM

It's well known that when you bring up players from the AHL you want to ease their transition process and allow them to acclimate to the NHL by first playing with other AHL players.

piqued 07-02-2012 08:33 PM

Nieuwendyk mentioned Fraser just now as part of the group of young players/prospects they want to incorporate at the NHL level next season. So maybe they do think he's knocking on the door and his skating/defense is ready.
