Back to problems of 09 (Impact Centre)

I might be a the minority but I think the Habs are a good team having a bad season. With some retooling I think we can compete with anyone in the new conference formats. But I noticed that we have a huge whole at centre, Gainey tried to fix it in 09 when he tired to land Lecavalier, but then traded for Gomez, we all know how that went but that's not the point.

IMO Pleck is a great 1 A/B centre, and while I've been really impressed with DD, and Eller also, both are not 2nd line centre.

And while I would love to trade for someone like Paul Stastny, the assets are simply not there/worth giving up to get someone like that.

So with that, is our only likelyhood of getting a true impact centre would be getting lucky and being able to draft someone like Grigorenko I don't know much about prospect and stuff but just reading around, it seems as though he might be just what we have been lacking for a long time.

Just wondering if there would be any opitions because it seems like the league is dry on centre, you have the Leafs,Sabres, Flames all looking for that impact centre for years but no results.

I think the Habs are a decent team. I wouldn't say good. I think other rival teams in the East got much better while the Habs didn't. Cole was a great aquisition but that's it.

Centre has always been an issue but when good centres were available the Habs drafted in other areas, mostly on the back-end to go with their philosophy of defense first. As long as they maintain this defense first mindset, they'll miss out on guys like Giroux and Getzlaf.

It's just they way that management thinks. Build up on D/goaltending first then add up front.

DD is good but like you said he's not a #1. Pleks is the closest to a #1 but he's more of an all-around player. Montreal hasn't had a true #1 centre since, since, ummm, since, Koiv, no wait, Ribei, no, uhhhh crap.

The last true #1 center was Damphousse! Fear not, I think our draft pick will be high enough to choose one of Grigorenko, Galchenyuk, Gaunce or Girgensons (holy G, Batman!). All of which have that potential, from what I've read.

Agree, but I think this year we have a chance to draft in the top 3 with some luck (draft lottery) where its easier to land that impact player, and with Grigorenko likely that, it seems like the best chance for us to get that Centre.

Yes but if they get a top pick like that, will they pick a centreman? Hopefully they do.

Don't forget about "Holy F Batman!" - Forsberg. :)

given that Centre has been the most pressing need for this team for the longest time, and given that top draft picks have been scarce, a failure to choose a centre would be the largest management f-up since, well, the last big management f-up.

hard to win if not near impossible without a #1 center. gainey knew this and tried hard first for lecavalier then sundin. he wasn't able to get the job done and eventually this lead to his demise in montreal.

habs should be drafting high in this draft unless they have a resurgence. a #1 center should be their priority, if not possible the trade route even if it means moving their pick next summer

Couldn't be any bigger than Tremblay vs Roy and the terrible trade that ensued :S

I think we'll get that center next draft, we're that good at failing atm.

Is tonight's game a sign of things to come from Eller? Clearly he won't score 4 goals every game (CAN YOU IMAGEEN?)

But, we all know he has what it takes to be a top 6, or top 3 if we're lucky, center...

Our Centre situation for the future [ALL CENTRE DEPTH DISCUSSION]

At least not in the top 2 lines

edit (just as said below) :

This isn't a bashing thread. It is a positive thread in disguise.

Plekanec and Eller are locked in the top 6 as centers, nothing will budge them out of there.

Well it has been the case for a long time now

Where have you been?

Theosis 01-04-2012 09:29 PM

When he came back earlier he was on the wing for the 3rd/4th lines... So yeah.

MooseOllini 01-04-2012 09:34 PM

I heard they are gonna make him play first base

Habs Junkie 01-04-2012 09:34 PM

Man you Gomez bashers are getting annoying. Why don't you go post something positive in the other threads? The habs won and rocked it tonight! Get a life

Its time to bury Gomez in the minors:rant:

hockeyfan2k11 01-04-2012 09:47 PM

Habs have a pretty damn good record with Gomez in the lineup. Forget about his salary for a moment. He's still a valuable player.

Et le But 01-04-2012 09:48 PM

It's basically him or Desharnais. Gomez is better defensively but right now DD is probably the best playmaking C we have. He could possibly play as a wing though. Eller is far too effective in the middle to be wasted.

I guess if he must play C he can compete with Noke for the 4th line role.

But he's really not.

Prairie Habs 01-04-2012 09:50 PM

Anyone else think that PG has told Gomez to stay "injured" for the rest of the regular season and he won't get sent down and then he can come back in the playoffs when the cap doesn't matter? Run on sentences and tinfoil hats aside I agree Plek-Eller looks like a good 2 way 1-2 punch.

Hugo Sham 01-04-2012 09:53 PM

i get the feeling they're prepping him to be the burrito/fajita post game meal specialist
