Carl Gunnarsson - "The most underrated blueliner in the league"

Great interview with Carl Gunnarsson on the Tim & Sid show. he's an amazing and humble guy. i think he's a great player and we're lucky to have him. he turned 25 last Nov. and i think he's got even more upside. on pace for 24 points, but i know he can get more. i sincerely hope he gets over 30.

On more than one occasion this year Ron Wilson and the other guys in that room to the media have basically called you "the most underrated blueliner in the league".
^do you like the quote? do you agree?

Beleafer4 01-06-2012 09:50 PM

He has no flash so many people from other fanbases underrate him, but I certainly dont.

Griffski 01-06-2012 09:51 PM

I just said today on the trade boards he's the most underrated leaf for sure.

Dangles McGavin 01-06-2012 10:00 PM

Gunnarsson speaking of Gus: "I think at one point he thought the game was too easy so he dropped is glove and decided to play [like that]".

Pyromaniac3 01-06-2012 10:02 PM

He is probably the smartest blueliner in our lineup. Liles might give a run for it though.

I agree, he certainly is the most underrated Leaf for sure.

He doesn't have much offensive talent and flashiness to his game which makes him really underrated, but the guy is a defensive stal-wart and a very smart/ high end IQ player.

Love his game. He's been really solid for us and I'm perfectly fine seeing him in the Blue and White so I could care less if others want to give him the credit he deserves.

Just to make a general comment based on the quote about the coach and teammates calling him underrated - those kind of comments seem to be a trend in the locker room this season and I love it. Not that past teams haven't been humble but it's just great to see at every chance a player has to pat his own back and relish in the praise others are giving him, he selflessly passes the credit over to his teammates - there's definitely a 'playing for each other' vibe I get from this roster.

Any knowledgeable fan would know he's one of our most steady d-men. Happy he's still around to hold the fort for the Leafs. Even his stats have been consistent through his tenure here. I only see them going up as the team improves.

Seems like when he plays with Dion he plays in a strong defensive role, and with Schenn a balanced but more offensive role. Nice to see that kind of versatility.

Porn* 01-06-2012 10:18 PM

he's a prototypical swede, and we're very lucky to have him.

SuperSaiyanBeastmode 01-06-2012 10:19 PM

legit #2 defenseman IMO. What a beast, and honestly I think he has more of an offensive upside than he's given credit for. I think he can hit 40pts next year with solid pp time for the whole year. He also has an amazing contract, only 1.325m per for this year and next, and is an rfa after it.

Dangles McGavin 01-06-2012 10:20 PM

Carl "Hybrid D-man" Gunnarsson.

Loved him since he joined the Leafs. His hockey IQ is great and extremely noticeable.

Now if we can only teach him to stop fanning on shots :P

True. Though recently you can sometimes see him taking the blueline shot every once and while even with Dion (PP). He's much more accurate, but less powerful than Dion ('high and wide' syndrome still plaguing Dion, but I concede that he's improved a great deal since last year).

I wouldn't mind if Gunnar just stays defensively reliable all the time, goals be damned. Good passer, keen eyes for the play, and overall good hockey knowledge/instinct. His explosiveness could use a little work though and maybe even his hitting/aggression. Still satisfied by his play regardless. 25 and hitting his prime. Should be ready when the Leafs start raising questions about the cup, rather than about making it in there for a peak.

Crabovski* 01-06-2012 10:27 PM

He is under rated but I dont think his ever going to be #1 material, but right now I think hes a perfect fit for a third dman. I wouldnt call him a 2 guy cause he doesnt really bring a whole lot to the table, but does his job efficiently so I dont mind seeing him play on the first line. I personally think Liles is our 2 guy, and when hes gone it will become Gardiner. I love our d corpse god I just wanna cuddle a little puppy right now thinking about it, I havent even mentioned Schenn

ForSpareParts* 01-06-2012 10:29 PM

i can see Gunnarsson being a mainstay more than any other player. i sometimes think he'll be a Leaf longer than Dion.

Igy 01-06-2012 10:30 PM

Definitely underrated and I honestly could care less about his point production. It's his defensive game that stands out the most to me. Top 4 D man no doubt.

capfit9 01-06-2012 10:36 PM

his play is definitely underrated but i get the feeling that off the ice he is even more underrated, seems like he has leadership qualities which to be honest I never expected from him

firstemperor 01-06-2012 10:37 PM

He's good defensively but he is pretty bad offensively (worst than Schenn IMO). He fans on about 50% of shots he takes off a pass. However, he's easily our best defensive d-man and most consistent.

there is nobody on this team worse offensively than schenn

Well he is a defensive defenseman. I don't really expect him to contribute in that way. He does shoot alot for having such a miserable shot though.

Thomas Malthus 01-06-2012 11:13 PM

Steady and reliable top four defenseman that can play top pairing minutes. He's been great this season but his offensive game has some room to grow, especially his shot as others have pointed out. I hope he's a Leaf for a long time.

OOH YOU're killing me....

Gunnar makes the smart play 99.9% of the time. He's that guy who chips the puck out, chips the puck in, blocks the pass on the 2-on-1, makes the good breakout pass, plays smart defensively and passes good enough to run a decent Powerplay.

Lidstrom-lite??? :dunno:

Other fan bases might ignore him but I'll wager money Burke gets asked about him 5x as much as Schenn in trade talks.

IBLeaf* 01-06-2012 11:23 PM

Pretty bad offensively. However, he is great defensively, makes few mistakes and most importantly, makes his defence partner better.

Suntouchable13 01-06-2012 11:35 PM

Saying that he is pretty bad offensively is a bit of a stretch. I think he is OK offensively, not bad.
