-Associated Press-

Though the Colorado Avalanche are once again playing well on the road, they are likely to face a stiff test in their next contest against the team with best home record in the NHL.

Trying to match a season high with their fifth consecutive victory overall, the surging Avalanche look to complete a perfect four-game trip Saturday night when they face a St. Louis Blues team that has not suffered a regulation home loss in more than a month.

Colorado (23-18-1) opened the season with six straight road wins then dropped its next nine away from home. The Avalanche have since followed that skid with four consecutive road victories after a 4-0 win at Chicago on Friday.

Semyon Varlamov made 27 saves for his second shutout while T.J. Galiardi had a goal with an assist as the Avalanche won for the ninth time in 10 games overall. Colorado has allowed more than two goals once over the last 10 games - that coming in a 4-1 loss to Winnipeg on Dec. 27.

The Avalanche also have scored four goals in two of their last three games.

"If we can keep doing that, I think we'll have success," Galiardi told the NHL's official website.

Varlamov, who has stopped 103 of 108 shots during his four-game winning streak, could be back in net as Colorado looks for a third straight win over St. Louis (23-12-5) this season. Both previous victories came by 3-2 scores at the Pepsi Center.

The fourth-year netminder is 3-0-0 with a 1.62 goals-against average against St. Louis.

Teammate Jean-Sebastien Giguere, meanwhile, has a 1.96 GAA while winning five of his last six starts and stopped 37 shots against the Blues on Dec. 21.

"Our goaltending has been unbelievable," Galiardi said.

Colorado has won nine of 10 overall against the Blues, but its lone loss during that span came 3-1 on the road April 5 to snap a three-game win streak in the series at the Scottrade Center.

A league-best 16-3-2 at home, the Blues are 8-0-1 in St. Louis since losing 5-2 in regulation to Chicago on Dec. 3. The Blues snapped a three-game losing streak overall by beating Phoenix and Edmonton to open their current three-game home stretch.

"We're a good home team. We're a good team period," said defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo, who had three assists in a 4-3 win over the Oilers on Thursday. "When we play the way we're capable to playing, good things happen."

St. Louis' David Backes, who two goals and eight assists in his last 10 games, has three and an assist during his last six versus Colorado.

Though St. Louis is 18-0-0 when scoring three or more goals this season, it has not posted more than three in any game while losing nine of 10 against the Avalanche.

Jaroslav Halak has been in net the last two games and has a 1.95 GAA during a 6-0-3 stretch, but ex-Avalanche goalie Brian Elliott is likely to make the start for the Blues on Saturday.

Elliott is 14-5-0 with a 1.70 GAA in his first season with St. Louis, but has allowed six goals while dropping his last two starts. He made 19 saves in the loss at Colorado on Dec. 21.

BTW if the Blues win tonight and Detroit loses...then we take the lead in the Central!!! Go Blues!!! :yo:

Ugh maybe tonight is the night we actually beat the Avalanche. I'm not feeling confident though. Feels like another shootout loss to me.

Here's to me being wrong.

GOBLUES4257 01-07-2012 09:36 AM

3-2 so loss. They just cant beat the avs.

2 Minute Minor 01-07-2012 09:38 AM

I think the team will come out with some extra motivation:
- still mad from last game vs Oilers
- embarrassed at performance in last game vs Avs
- at home
- Elliott wanting to redeem himself after losing last game to old team

That plus its important to win every game, but even moreso against the teams in the hunt. And to Colorado's credit, they've clawed back into the hunt. If Minnesota doesn't stop its freefall, the Avs are looking like the #8.

I am sick of the Blues out playing the Av's and losing. If it goes to a shootout, it's over. The Av's are hot and are coming off an impressive 4-0 road win in Chi town last night. Tonight should be fun. EJ is playing well too.

Sushiko 01-07-2012 11:27 AM

I have hope too but less confidence than in the last 2 games. God don't get me started with shootouts. So sick of them. I think I'd crap a brick if they win one this season.

Let's Go Blues!

Just got my new avatar done for the game!

Its a TRAP!!

The Note 01-07-2012 01:33 PM

The Avs just played last night in Chicago (although they won easily.) If the Blues can't beat them tonight on a few days rest at home, then there's some real concern when it comes to COL

frostyflo 01-07-2012 02:12 PM

hope they`re abit overconfident after owning us and their W yesterday,
hopefully we can get one or two till they find their legs/game

LET`S GO BLUES!

AvsFan7* 01-07-2012 02:36 PM

Good Luck tonight guys, looks like both our teams are proving everyone wrong this year, should be a good game.

BlueDream 01-07-2012 03:16 PM

This could be a pretty huge game. Both teams are hot. Avs are 9-1 in their last 10 (have won 3 in a row I think) and while the Blues have won just 2 in a row, we are still 8-0-1 in our last 9 home games. Should be a battle between two teams playing great hockey.

But of course, we will lose because EJ had a good game last night so he is now a legit #1, and then Stefan Elliott is the 2nd coming of Jesus. :sarcasm:

Fact: When Elliott's in goal at the same time as a presidential debate, he is 3-0, 0.33GAA, .986 save pct with two shutouts.

Like this one, all three games were at home (Tampa 3-0, SJ 1-0, NYR 4-1).

There is a debate tonight starting an hour after the game.

Only if he can get some very lucky breaks during the first hour of elapsed time! But how do we explain Elliott's success during non-debate time?

PocketNines 01-07-2012 04:29 PM

Five more to come, too. Upcoming scheduled debates:

–Monday Jan 16 in South Carolina (Fox). Blues host Dallas.
–Thursday Jan 19 in South Carolina (CNN). Blues host Edmonton.
–Monday Jan 23 in Florida (NBC). Blues at Detroit.
–Thursday Jan 26 in Florida (CNN). No game, All-Star break.
–Wednesday Feb 22 in Arizona (CNN). Blues host Boston.
–Thursday March 1 in Georgia (CNN). Blues at Vancouver.
–Monday March 5 in California (NBC). No game!
–Monday March 19 in Oregon (PBS). No game!

CarvinSigX 01-07-2012 04:30 PM

I won't expect a win tonight, because we never beat them. We've been the better team for a few years now, and we're still struggling to show what we can do against fast teams. Have to be all over this team right from the start and never let up. My prediction...Colorado wins 4-2. Blues receive a minimum of 5 minor penalties.

HANDZ 57 01-07-2012 04:39 PM

I'm here to bring good vibes to the thread. 3-0 blues at home;)

Falco Lombardi 01-07-2012 05:09 PM

Clearly we need more debates

Alklha 01-07-2012 05:12 PM

I'll be confident and say we get the regulation win. Our PP is up to 23rd in the League now, and I'll say it continues the upward trend tonight.

The Note 01-07-2012 05:13 PM

I really don't understand why we can't beat them. They're not leaps and bounds better than us (idk if they're better than us at all) I just don't get it. If they play like they did against PHX and the first and third of the EDM game they should beat the Avs. Last game gave me a lot of confidence that the team can overcome things they couldn't in recent seasons, hopefully the Avs become one of those things

bluesman11 01-07-2012 05:19 PM

I think they'll win this one because they're do. They should start getting some of these points that elude them if they're truly maturing as a team.

Alklha 01-07-2012 06:40 PM

Not scoreboard watching or anything... but the Leafs leading Detroit 3-0 in the first is pleasing to see :)

PocketNines 01-07-2012 06:44 PM

If the Leafs lead holds up and Wings lose in regulation, Blues will have the Central lead in points and points percentage at the halfway mark.

IF THEY WIN.
