Coyotes pick up Gilbert Brule on waivers

Well, welcome to the club.

This must be the home for 1st round busts. IIRC the first of a long line of 1st line busts was Gratton, who we picked up back in the Francis days.

doaner 01-10-2012 11:36 AM

Hope he does well with us.

moosemeister 01-10-2012 11:36 AM

Lol how weird. Hope he works out.

rt 01-10-2012 11:37 AM

It will be interesting to see if he can surpass the likes of O'Sullivan, O'Reilly, and Chipchura in terms of effectiveness.

Isn't that like wondering which of the chicks on Jersey Shore is the least obnoxious?

Uhm,.... Kilger, D.Shannon, Jocco. And that's just from the 96-97 season. This franchise has a long history of 1st round busts that started long before Gratton.

Throwing poop on the wall to see what sticks - we are desperate.

JuniorNelson 01-10-2012 11:49 AM

This is a guy with a lot of upside. I watched him play junior and he has the goods. A problem for him is fitting into a rigid defensive system. He was a duck out of water in Columbus for that reason. Edmonton was going to be a good situation for him, being a young team, but injuries are an issue.

If he shakes off the injuries and is given some PP and top six minutes, I think he might be the steal of the year!

AZcoyotes33 01-10-2012 12:08 PM

I dont mind the move. O'Sullivan and O'Reilly are nothing special and havent showed that much potential to grow.

Plus Gordon is coming back so that gives us Langkow, Gordon, Brule and Chipchura down the middle. Not great by any stretch but if he can find some of that offense he had in the 2010-09 season this could be a decent move.

albertabound 01-10-2012 12:11 PM

Can they send him down to Portland ?
If he doesn't wotk out how long are we stuck with him? Is his contract not 2 years left?

Naych_PHX 01-10-2012 12:19 PM

I really didn't expect this. I think it's kind of redundant. I don't think he will be a really great fit here. Hope I'm wrong.

elias 01-10-2012 12:23 PM

it seems that o\reilly or o'sullivan will be traded or on waivers soon...

BuddehJuS 01-10-2012 12:34 PM

We'll see. I like the physicality he can bring even though he is on the smallish side.

O'sullivan already got send down to Portland.

O'reilly could be waived but he has a 1 way contract.

Pouliot will most likely be sent down this week even thought he played better than O'Reilly because of contract status.

i've just looked at Pouliot icetime and compared to Oreilly's
i don't really get the idea of using oreilly to be honest - he doesn't bring something to the team...let's hope Brule will add smth
but we need Bure type player of course as we don't have real goalscorers and playmakers

rt 01-10-2012 12:59 PM

Brule's contract expires after this season. We are only responsible for about 450k total. He can be sent down, but must clear waivers first.

Patrick O'Sullivan is on a two-way deal and has already been sent down.

Cal O'Reilly has a one-way deal and can be sent down, but only after clearing waivers.

Marc Pouliot has a two-way deal, and can be sent down, only after clearing waivers.

The same is true of Kyle Chipchura.

rt 01-10-2012 01:47 PM

Took a quick look at nhl.com. He's not here to help specialty teams, I can tell you that.

Over the last two NHL seasons, he had a grad total of six PP points, and averaged less than ten seconds per game on the PK.

Face off percentage is solid, though. Wins quite a few more than he loses.

knowsthegame 01-10-2012 02:00 PM

What we really need is an impact forward - I know, the ownership saga makes this virtually impossible.

Art.Vandelay 01-10-2012 02:00 PM

I went back and compiled a list of former number ones acquired by the Coyotes. This does not include players drafted by them.

David Rundblad #17 - 2009
Gilbert Brule #6 - 2005
Alex Bourret #16 - 2005
Al Montoya #6 - 2004
Alexandre Picard #8 - 2004
Petteri Nokelainen #16 - 2004
Kyle Chipchura #18 - 2004
Lauri Korpikoski #19 - 2004
Wojtek Wolski #21 - 2004
Marc-Antoine Pouliot #22 - 2003
Scottie Upshall #6 - 2002
Keith Ballard #11 - 2002
Boyd Gordon #17 - 2002
Rostislav Klesla #4 - 2000
Raffi Torres #5 - 2000
Marcel Hossa #16 - 2000
David Hale #22 - 2000
Jeff Taffe #30 - 2000
Pavel Brendl #4 - 1999
Taylor Pyatt #8 - 1999
Jamie Lundmark #9 - 1999
Oleg Saprykin #11 - 1999
David Tanabe #16 - 1999
Nick Boynton #21 - 1999

Lots of misses, some hits. They seemed to like the 2004 and 1999 draft classes.

He can be sent to Portland but his contract is 1-way so its more likely that one of the 2-way deals will be demoted if a contract spot is needed.

Tip and the Don do like to run a meritocracy but they also have to pay attention to $$.

sueroe 01-10-2012 02:13 PM

Gilbert Brule's style of hockey will be a perfect fit for the Coyotes. He plays big, grinds it out, will hit, and can play centre. His issue is he plays well when healthy. He hasn't made it through a season in the last few years without health related issues. I think he had some depression issues, possibly related to concussion and when he came to the Kings they sent him back, because he came injured. I hope the best for him, hope he stays healthy, and if so it could be a good pick up.

He probably just went back to 99. Otherwise it'd go all the way back to '88 and Jeremy Roenick.
