trade our UFA's, get top prospects back

we cant compete in the playoffs just yet, dont trade our youth ,just to try and save wilsons job. load up on some good prospects, ala gardiener, cobourn, franzen etc
next year will be our year, add some good ufas this summer, mix with the youth. there are alot of good UFAs this summer

playoffs this year, we will get our ***** kicked, plus we will lose some good prospects, then have no money to sign any UFAs this summer, because we will bring in more money with trades with has beens.

burke keep on pace, next year we will be very strong, dont do it for wilson.
burke did say he never wants to go into the playoffs just to get our ***** kicked. boston, rangers ring a bell.

Darcy Tucker 01-15-2012 07:27 PM

Grabovski: resign
Liles: resign

who else is coming up to UFA?

Thee Implication 01-15-2012 07:28 PM

Were not rebuilding though

InterceptSchenn 01-15-2012 07:28 PM

Why exactly can't we compete in the playoffs? If Florida, Ottawa and New Jersey can, we can as well.

GordieHoweHatTrick 01-15-2012 07:28 PM

Run705 01-15-2012 07:29 PM

If we can turn Grabo into Getzlaf and resign Liles I'd be a happy panda.

InterceptSchenn 01-15-2012 07:30 PM

Also, wait till the deadline then propose this. We cant just ship out Grabo and Liles (both UFA) for picks when we need them for our playoff push/spot. If its for a 1C in a package then yeah trade Grabo, if not resign him. He has proven he can be a reliable 2 way 2nd line centre in this league.

That will happen eventually no matter what year we finally make it.

As for the prospects, based on what? The incredible amount of prospects Burke has dealt away at this point? If he adds anything it will be another young-ish player that will be here a long time.

Trade them, then resign them if you want .
but do you think long term they will make a difference in the playoffs, no get bigger and meaner and faster, and younger

playoff push for what to play boston, when we can add another gardiener, colbourne

maybe philly takes liles and garbo, they can compete for the playoffs we get couturie back.
trade mac + for another proven player

Drew311 01-15-2012 07:44 PM

I didn't know we had players named Gardiener, Cobourn and Franzen.

Krazy 01-15-2012 07:46 PM

I agree with this. Toronto is still a young rebuilding team. Young players still need to play and there are 2 key young centers (kadri and Colborne) and a young D (gardiner) who needs time.

Toronto doesnt have space for all these players. Grabo and liles will be looking at 4.5each, Franson needs a raise (2.75?) Monster as well 2.5?

Lupul (4.25) Conolly (4.75) Kessel (5.4)
Mac (3.25) Grabovski(4.5) Kulemin (2.75)
Lombo(3.5) Bozak (1.5) Armstrong (3)
Crab (.5) Steckel (1.1) Brown (.75)

Thats 35 million for forwards

Phaneuf (6.5) Komi (4.5)
Schenn(3.6) Gunnar (1.4)
Lilies (4.5) Franson (2.75)
Gardiner (.5)

24 million approx
then goalies would be about 4.

The kids need to play. There are 3 forwards (frattin/Kadri/colborne) and 2 d (gardiner and aulie) that need playing time.

There are too many forwards and D as of now. Things may change if a big trade happens, but its likely that a big trade will have a big salary so then to will need the approx 9 million space.

I would trade them for picks/prospects for sure.

those teams are not going to trade youth this year to make the playoffs

we are talking about getting rid of schenn, kadri, gunnerson, colbourne, gardiner, franzen, just to make the playoffs, and then what rebuild next year.

liles grabo, mac connelly, are not our future,

Gus can peace if he wants 2.5.

Mess 01-15-2012 07:52 PM

As long as Liles remains out with a concussion, he isn't going anywhere.

you are right, if we get rid of our youth and add more salery we will be right back to 2004/2005

We could also just keep and re-sign Grabo, not entirely sabotage the rest of the season and we could try and not have a 10.5 million dollar third line or a 5th or 6th defenseman making 4 million dollars in the off season.

Suntouchable13 01-15-2012 07:58 PM

Burke clearly said that he is looking to add. That does not mean that he will trade youth for rentals, though. It is time to make to make the playoffs. Give our young players a taste of what the playoffs are like. They may get their ***** kicked (that is far from a guarantee) but that will be a good learning experience for them. I'd rather see this team get blown out in the first round instead of missing the playoffs again. You say that they can't compete in the playoffs? How will they ever be able to unless they actually get in once and see what it's like.

A few season's ago, Boston got swept in the first round as the 8th seed. Did that hurt them? No, they got better each time and won the cup last summer. Gotta make the playoffs and take your lumps first.

OR, we could trade them all and be right back to 2009!!! Why EVER get better? We could be the new Islanders!!!

liles grabo, mac connelly, are not our future,

You do realize that Liles is 31, Grabovski is 28 and MacArthur is 26. These are players in their primes and will be for the next 5 years. Why sell off two perfectly good 2nd line forwards and a great puck moving/PP defenseman for a bunch of futures that may not even turn out to be NHLers? Even giving guys like Aulie and Colborne more of a shot because they are young and "need playing time" doesn't make sense. Liles is much more important to this team RIGHT NOW than Aulie will ever be, and Grabovski is the player RIGHT NOW that we hope Colborne will turn into. It's not like our UFA's are 35 years old and over the hill. Selling off good players that will help the Leafs in the near future completely contradicts what Burke is trying to accomplish with this team.
