Wow. His lists always surprise me. You'd think I'd get used to it by now.
But Dumba 2nd? Grigorenko 7th? Murray 9th? Grigorenko and Murray are in the top 3 for me.

Bure 01-16-2012 12:05 PM

Why does he hate Grig so much, I dont get it.

AwesomePanthers 01-16-2012 12:07 PM

Not a terrible list at all, but wow what a draft this will be with quality and depth.

My biggest concern is Grigorenko at 7th, he should be top2.

Bure 01-16-2012 12:10 PM

Also Murray should be top 5.

OiledUp 01-16-2012 12:10 PM

Three goalies in the first round? Nah.

Not that I'm a big Button fan or anything, it's a ranking not a prediction. If somebody posted a ranking prior to the 2009 Draft which had Ryan O'Reilly at 15, Stefan Elliott at 22, and Tyson Barrie at 24, that person would have been flamed badly. But that's what Colorado's list looked like.

I'll put a bet that no goalie makes the first round.

Oh, and Craig Button is a bum!

This is not a mock draft, it is a ranking of the players. Very different.

Rabid Ranger 01-16-2012 12:37 PM

Not sure what Trouba has done to drop two places.

This

Very surprised to see Lindholm and Bystrom that high but I expect at least one of them to be first rounders in the end. I also don´t really think Dansk is worth a first round pick atm, maybe a second or third.

R S 01-16-2012 12:58 PM

Up or down. I'm usually a defender of Craig but I always come across feeling that he has a certain guy ranked at one point without seeing him much...then he has a good viewing of the player and he rockets up 10 spots in his rankings.

I understand it's basically impossible to see all these players and get a good feeling for them...but it's just something I've noticed.

That's why this year I've really just tried to focus on ranking WHL guys, instead of basing lists on 1-2 viewings of guys from out East or Europe.

Renegade, you just hit on one of the most important (but under-reported) facts.... most of these guys spew info as if they're experts, but it is impossible for them to have seen these guys enough to be experts.

The "analysts" on TSN, Sportsnet (especially) and CBC crack me up. They pontificate about teams or players as if they're experts when even a cursory glance at their personal schedules would show they certainly aren't seeing these players/teams live, if at all.

Doug MacLean (the biggest blow-hard in media if you ask me) was blatantly caught in this the other night when he went on in depth about each play in the Leaf game that he had clearly watched. Then, moments later, he went on a rant about how poor the Habs D is and how lousy each player was that night when he had just admitted he watched the other game.

My round-about point? These guys often know less than the fans.

Grigorenko..#7..not sure why he doesn't like him that much.

I just find it odd considering he is clearly rewarding/punishing players based on their WJC performance. For instance, Vasilevski goes up 22 places. Then, you have Trouba who also played well, but is dropped two places.

Nick Ebert is falling so far. Wasn't he top-10 at the start of the season?

Im out at OHL rinks quite often, and Ive seen Button at at least 5 games this season. No doubt that he is out there looking at players. Agree or not agree, I think its fair to say that he puts the work in.

Top 5 I believe. From my understanding he has struggled being the go to guy in Windsor, though.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying he doesn't try and isn't working at it. I'm saying it's a physical impossibility for any one person to have an expert opinion on all of these guys.

Even seeing a guy 5 or 6 times doesn't really give you a great perspective. To really understand what a player brings, you need to see him live, multiple times in many situations over a decent time period. You simply can't be a generalist at this game of scouting.

It's why most teams do the regional thing. Try to have scouts see the same teams many times. Most NHL scouts I speak with acknowledge that fact.... they'll see a guy a dozen times and still not feel completely comfortable that they've seen him enough. No way any guy in the media gets to enough games to compile an accurate list without relying on second hand info.

Kevin Forbes 01-16-2012 02:23 PM

I've gotta agree with Tim.

How can guys like Button balance a scouting schedule with a broadcast schedule that sees him in studio multiple times a week?

When McKenzie releases "his" list, he admits that it's mainly derived from combining multiple scouts opinions. Button's listing states it is from his own individual assessment.

Is he employing the Sabres technique and scouting over game tape? It's not necessarily a knock on Button, but it's really unclear how he's actually coming up with these rankings. If it's his own opinion with consultation from his sources, then it should be stated as such.

Madic 01-16-2012 02:47 PM

^ Which reminds me...shouldn't McKenzie's midseason list be coming out?

No love for Gaunce in Button's list. Not sure why not. Doesn't have too many holes in his game/raw skills.
