Penguins claim Cal O'Reilly

DarrenDreger Darren Dreger
O'Reilly claimed by Penguins on re-entry waivers.

MolinariPG Dave Molinari
Penguins claim Cal O'Reilly off waivers. No word on whether he will join team in time for game in Toronto tonight.

DarrenDreger Darren Dreger
O'Reilly's salary $1.05 mil. Penguins pay half of what remains on the CAP # aprox $375,000...so Pitt is on the hook for half of that.

Is this Cal O'Reilly from Phx? Anyone know anything about him? haha

Yeah it's Cal, sorry. I edited the thread title to reflect that.

4th Line depth with Asham out maybe? Send MacDonald down. Don't know much about him at all though

tocchet92 02-01-2012 12:12 PM

Smallish playmaking center originally drafted by Nashville when Shero was there. Hasn't done much in the big show but put up impressive numbers in the AHL.

With a name like that he should be an enforcer ;)

Minor League move. Doubt he plays a single minute with the big club.

I thought you couldn't claim somebody and then put him in the minors. If they do that then the team he came from has the chance to claim him back.

Doesn't he have to remain with the big club? Otherwise, he would have to be offered back to PHX, right?

Why would they pick up a player on an expiring one-way contract for the AHL?

eXile59 02-01-2012 12:15 PM

Championship!!! I really know nothing about him.

He's clearly Crosby's replacement. Crosby can probably retire now knowing we have somebody who can pick up his slack.

edit: ADD moment, is he related to Ryan in Colorado?

uomfan123 02-01-2012 12:17 PM

I'm assuming we claimed him to save money/cap space on a fourth liner while Asham is out?

My bad, I had no clue he was on a one way. Jumped the gun because picking up another smallish player who plays center makes no sense to me if he's going to play with the Pens.

Did Park get hurt?

He was a 1 PPG player in the AHL and is from the Nashville system. He's only 25. The guy has some potential and Shero saw a chance to get something for nothing.

I know he's listed as a center, but can he play wing too? Does anybody know anything about him other than stats lol?

I'd love a little scouting report on the guy.

Big McLargehuge 02-01-2012 12:22 PM

Soft as a teddy bear and about as hard of a worker as Robert Dome.

He's the antithesis of his younger brother.

Colin McDonald sucks at hockey. That's why he was claimed. Does Cal suck less? Stay tuned to find out.

Yeah he's the older brother of Ryan.

"Cal O'Reilly tantalized Nashville Predators fans with his offensive contributions early last season, establishing some chemistry with Steve Sullivan. A protracted cold stretch culminated in a season-ending leg injury, however, putting his ascension within the Preds organization on hold until this fall. "

An interesting report from his days with the Preds....

Final (probably) note on Cal O'Reilly: He will be a RESTRICTED free agent after this season.

We'll see how he responds to playing for this team. Hopefully they can find a way to fix that issue. At least somewhat.

Ignatius 02-01-2012 12:34 PM

I recall Shea Weber speaking very highly of him last season when he was in Nashville. He chipped in with offense every few games for the Preds, may be a decent bottom six fill-in for us.

Jag68Sid87 02-01-2012 12:40 PM

Good pickup. O'Reilly has some skill and he's a natural C. He's exactly what we would want not knowing EXACTLY what Sid's situation is. If Sid returns, we could possibly entertain the idea of dealing Jeffrey now, imo. OR, we could move Jeffrey to wing permanently. If Sid doesn't come back, the combination of O'Reilly and Jeffrey should be decent on the third line. This obviously assumes a lot, such as Park not playing 3rd line C (who are we kidding, Bylsma loves him).

Now we should focus on landing a top six winger to play on Sid's line (if he's back, or be a central figure on our second scoring unit if Sid's not back).
