CALGARY, AB – The Calgary Flames announced today they have signed centre Krys Kolanos to a two year, two-way contract and have recalled him from the Abbotsford Heat.

“Krys has been one of our best players in Abbotsford and has done everything we’ve asked of him to earn this opportunity,” said Flames General Manager Jay Feaster. “He has worked hard on being a responsible two-way player and we look forward to him contributing to our success at both ends of the ice.”

Kolanos, a native of Calgary, Alberta, has played 136 NHL games scoring 20 goals and adding 21 assists for 41 points and 92 penalty minutes with Phoenix, Edmonton, and Minnesota. After joining the Abbotsford Heat (AHL) on a professional try-out agreement, Krys went on to earn an AHL with the club. He leads the team in scoring netting 18 goals along with 22 assists for 40 points in 34 games. He was selected to represent the West in the AHL All-Star game this past weekend.

Contract Term: Two year/two-way contract with an AAV of $525,000
I question why.

Damn, beaten to it!

I don't really care for this. I would much rather see Byron or Wahl come up.

He's played well and for some reason feaster thinks he has a future with the flames.. I question why as well. I guess well see how it turns out.

I think this is a good move, I don't expect him to ever be an NHL regular but I think he's a good guy to have in the organization and more specifically on the Heat.

CGYPUKSUX 02-01-2012 03:11 PM

Can this team get any more desperate? :help:

MarkGio 02-01-2012 03:11 PM

Now let's see if this guy is career AHL

At best, the second coming of Jamie Lundmark. :shakehead

For some reason, with every call up I picture Troy Ward sitting in Abbotsford getting progressively angrier. Today he was all happy because Irving was coming back and Danny Taylor could have a break for the first time in ever, and then he gets told his best player is going away.

TheHudlinator 02-01-2012 03:43 PM

I don't know why everyone is so up set it is clear feaster made a promise to him that if he did his best to be a leader for the youth in AHL he would be given a shot at the NHL. Personally I am glad to see Jay is a man of his word and wants to reward hard work congrats Krys.

Great move by Feaster. Let's see what this kid can do.

I'd be glad to have him on an AHL only contract, but using up a roster slot for this guy? Yech. I hope this means they're not resigning Kosto, otherwise the Flames are going to have a glut of 4th liners.

I like this move. Hes a good AHL player, and can make for a decent call up player.. Lets see what he can do.

Boomstick 02-01-2012 04:13 PM

Does this mean Stempniak's out for awhile?

I Hate Chris Butler 02-01-2012 04:22 PM

Finally got that #1 centre.

TheHudlinator 02-01-2012 04:26 PM

I still don't get how people can be upset about rewarding hard work and dedication to our organization. The guy has busted his ass on the heat to get this shot lets see what he can do.

tfong 02-01-2012 04:35 PM

I hope this is because we are trading someone otherwise kind of a head scratcher.

Yech? He is the Heat's leading scorer. Again, I'm not saying I like this for the Flames inparticular, but if he's scoring alot of points on the Heat and the Flames are having trouble with scoring, what is wrong with giving this guy a shot for at least a few games to see if he can contribute? Nemisz sure wasn't doing much in his callups.

The Flames are in a playoff hunt, Kolanos has been a good guy for the Heat this year and I see this as nothing but a positive for the Flames.

This. Business is business, but this is just good practice. It says a lot about somebody that stays true to thier word. It's good managment to reward someone's efforts and provide some incentive, even if it's a long shot. Good on Feaster.

And those who are upset, remember that Kolanos has been the leader in points for a while, yet our call-ups have been young, prospective NHLers from our home grown system. Feaster waited until Kolanos was consitently performing before giving him a shot at the big club.

How can you be mad at letting a guy play when you know he's going to play like there's no tomorow. This guy will play his heart out! I'm excited to see what he's got. It would make a good story to give this guy a NHL career if he can prove to be NHL calibre.

Body Checker 02-01-2012 06:01 PM

Maybe the next PA Parenteau?

Yep. Especially playing in front of his hometown. A lot of pressure too. It will be interesting to see how this works out.

that's because people are stupid and think age is everything.

Kolanos has been the Heats best forward all year, he is the only forward producing at a level you would think may translate to scoring at the NHL level. I would have preferred to give him a deal in the summertime but Kolanos has earned this contract plain and simple.

It's pathetic that certain people think that opportunities should just be handed to people who don't deserve them and cry about people earning opportunities. This is whats wrong with hockey and what's wrong with our society.

King In The North 02-01-2012 09:40 PM

What age did Timonen become an NHL regular
