Before Smith arrived I was fine with him on the 4th line; now I want him to never play in a Preds uniform again.

maplepred 02-02-2012 08:57 PM

Trade him while teams still want him

AEM6729 02-02-2012 08:57 PM

He is 32.

He leads the team in minor penalties.

His role has been replaced and then some by players that are younger and better than him.

Enough said. Peace out Smitty!

NoNecksCurse 02-02-2012 08:58 PM

if we could get a 5th round pick for him, i'd be tickled pink

Is this a true statement?

Can we get anything for this guy??

Get rid of the baby face scarecrow. Hes a liability. And he sucks. But he also seems to with Trotz also, probably why hes still here

NoNecksCurse 02-02-2012 09:09 PM

the baby face scarecrow? haha too epic, nice!

glenngineer 02-02-2012 09:42 PM

I'd have to say you could find a small use out of him in a package trade, might be able to get some slight value out of him. If you can't do that, you certainly can't trade him straight-up for a pick. I'd just put him on waivers and bring up Kyle Wilson or Chris Mueller again. Smithson is beyond due, he's been just someone we needed in the line-up when we weren't a cap team. Now, hopefully we can be a cap team and pick-up some more talent around those areas or grow some from our draft picks.

worstfaceoffmanever 02-02-2012 10:45 PM

The team has improved and progressed, and Smithson has gone in the opposite direction. He's losing his speed as he reaches the end of his prime, and any offensive skill he might have had has long since left him. He's a negative on the offensive side of the puck for a team that demands balanced lines and balanced players. There's simply no place for him anymore when Spaling can fill his defensive role and Smith can also play the pivot.

I say waive him.

This isn't the greatest time to be making this poll

What were you going for here?

kypredsfan 02-03-2012 02:39 AM

I'd say that Spaling passed up Smithson last year. Not sure what advantage Smithson really gives us right now.

RollingPredFan 02-03-2012 07:11 AM

I always thought he looked like that General Fishguy in Star Wars...

You guys forget Smithson has the pics of Trotz with a goat.

Seriously, he isn't going anywhere. I'm fine if he's a frequent scratch but he's exactly the kind of veteran depth player a playoff team needs to have in reserve.

Sitting in the press box is fine with me. On the ice I have a major problem with.

Do you really think the kids look at him and say, I can learn a lot from this guy? They are all more talented offensively than him. The kids are hustling every shift. They're playing good two way hockey. Let him sit.

Legionnaire11 02-03-2012 08:18 AM

That's why I said I don't care. If he's gone, so be it, with Spaling in the regular lineup we don't miss Smithson.

But it doesn't hurt to have him at the 13th, you know you can count on him to come in and give 100% effort and not hurt you in your own end. So if he stays, that's fine too.

preds1 02-03-2012 08:21 AM

Regardless of last night's game.......

No we don't need him.
Yes Trotz will keep him.

ThirdManIn 02-03-2012 08:23 AM

I'm pretty much indifferent, but I lean slightly towards leaving him for the reasons mentioned already. He can be scratched, and he is a veteran who is familiar with our system and can be plugged in if needed to play down the stretch. He'll take key face offs for you. He can kill penalties (provided he isn't taking them :shakehead ). As long as he isn't the one to bump up into a top 9 slot if an injury occurs there, I'm ok with him sticking around. It isn't like we'll get anything for him anyway.

If push comes to shove and we need his roster spot then just waive him like wfome said.

barrytrotzsneck 02-03-2012 08:56 AM

I'm fully appreciative of Smithson's contributions in the past. He's been a good defensive center, good faceoff man, all around foot soldier.

With that said, even ignoring last night's fiasco, he's not been an effective player this year. He's been a penalty machine(leads the team in minors,) and when he's not in the box, hasn't been the same player on the PK as he was in the past. I think he's been completely surpassed by Spaling, who not only has become a better PKer, but has more offensive ability(not saying much.)

When healthy, and going forward with any TD additions, Smithson shouldn't be looked at as any every night player.

My farts have more offensive ability than Smithson.

Do they stink as bad as he does though?
Smitty when you do make it on the ice do not take a stupid penalty when you know the refs are already geared to screw that team from the south that doesnt belong.

When is the Klein poll coming out? Watch most of the good scoring chances other teams have and you will more than likely see #8 involved. Two goals would have been 100% his fault last night if Lindback didnt make a great save on one.
I understand Smithson got a penalty and things got slowed down for everyone to see but dang just watch when Klein is on the ice. Yes, he does make the occassional good play but he makes 10 mistakes to evey one good play.
