Burke's Team - Not what he promised

He promised a tough team that plays on the edge ( see Boston ) and has delivered more of a skating , softer type of team.

Maybe he should "MAN UP" and explain to us his change in direction.. Personally I am sick of his BS.

Hurt 02-04-2012 06:37 PM

Write him a firmly worded letter. That will show him.

RaskY 02-04-2012 06:38 PM

Our team has got a good chance to make the playoffs for the first time in eight years and yet the amount of complaining I see would make one think were sitting in the basement of the eastern conference!

Newfie John 02-04-2012 06:39 PM

The game has changed very rapidly of late. To have that pugnacity and testosterone, you have to make sure you have a lot of skill to go with it.

With Phaneuf, Schenn, Armstrong, Brown, and at times Franson I'm happy with the hitting from the team.

The most important thing is wins, and they're starting to come a lot more often.

mooseOAK* 02-04-2012 06:39 PM

Understood, players skating fast makes the game difficult to follow.

His plan is still in motion. You make it sound like it's so easy to acquire big, tough, scoring forwards when in reality they're probably the rarest breed of hockey players these days. The old days with teams with goons with no skill are long gone, nowadays if you want to have a really tough, gritty team, you have to do it through the draft and acquire players like Backes, Lucic, Clowe, etc., who are big and tough but also possess lots of skill

BertCorbeau 02-04-2012 06:41 PM

Check the player's Burke has drafted and then that might change your mind. The toughness of this team going forward will rival that of Boston's.

Tie Domi Esquire 02-04-2012 06:41 PM

um Mr. Burke you promised the stalney cup! WHY ISN'T IT HERE YET?!!?

Once again, acquiring players like that is really difficult these days, they're extremely valuable and would command a hefty return through trade. Rarely do any of them make it to free agency since teams hang on to these guys, and the ones that are available are usually aging and breaking down. But hey, if you know how to acquire a Lucic or Clowe or Backes, please let Burke know your great ideas :sarcasm:

I should also add that if it means we win , then Iam all for it,the Point is..

Burke has never acknowledged his change in philosophy or direction..

TML g u n n e R s* 02-04-2012 06:48 PM

his main plan is playoffs.. and we are making the playoffs this year so mission accomplished...

KingBuzzo 02-04-2012 06:48 PM

He's drafted two big guys, one who possesses some offensive upside in Biggs, and one who just plow's through people in David Broll.

It's going to take some time, but if they reach what the scouting reports think they can, the Leafs will be pretty tough to play against.

RaskY 02-04-2012 06:49 PM

But I mean, here...

Joffrey Lupul - 6'0, 206 lbs (82 hits)
David Steckel - 6'6, 215 lbs (103 hits)
Keith Aulie - 6'6, 217 lbs (34 hits)
Cody Franson - 6'5, 213 lbs (64 hits)
Mike Komisarek - 6'4, 243 lbs (53 hits)
Dion Phaneuf - 6'3, 214 lbs (116 hits)
Luke Schenn - 6'2, 229 lbs (167 hits)

Tyler Biggs - 6'2, 205 lbs
Joe Colborne - 6'5, 213 lbs
Matt Frattin - 6'0, 200 lbs
Korbinian Holzer - 6'3, 205 lbs

RaskY 02-04-2012 06:50 PM

Forgot Kulemin too

yes he has and he's mentioned it recently. He still wants tough players, but he wants them to have skill. Like others have said look at the last few drafts to see the toughness he's trying to bring to the team... Tyler Biggs, Brad Ross, David Broll, Jamie Devane, to name a few. Give it time.

Donato 02-04-2012 06:52 PM

were clearly a long way from being done.. we got quite a bit of players that he signed or traded for who seem like stop gaps.. when he says its done, and were actually a contender then ill judge.

calcal798 02-04-2012 06:52 PM

If you cant skate through them, skate around them. I dont mind that philosophy.

blasted_Sabre 02-04-2012 06:57 PM

Have you been asleep all season? Burke has stated several times the NHL has changed, so has his philosophy on team building. Hes "manned up"

Did you miss when he sent Orr to the minors? His press conference about rats?

It all applies here.

cup67 02-04-2012 06:58 PM

the leafs always were a tough team to play against, until burke came and changed everything, soft fast team, never will hold up in a 7 game playoff series

juuj* 02-04-2012 06:58 PM

If u haven't notice, he did acknowledge that this team is built on speed but he also said he still likes to put in some size to free them up a lil more. Anyways i dont even care, where that come from, we are playing meaningful games, we can get excited and enjoy a whole season and your gonna complain about that. Also this product isn't finished yet, we are probably 75% at the most complete. This is not time or the season to worry about the fact we are a speed team, the final product will have it all. If in 3 years we are still small with no size up front then come back and start this thread again. Have fun bro with what we have, just enjoy it :)

dubey 02-04-2012 06:58 PM

Colton Orr should be our #1C

ThreeHundred 02-04-2012 06:58 PM

You are right
He wants a Boston type team.
He's made good moves but most of the significant ones are on D yet our system is so bad.
