In Praise Of Wilson

I remember the fierce debate when Wilson received an extension. No matter what was said in defence of Wilson, the penalty kill was thrown back, relentlessly, it was ALL about coaching, ALL Wilson's fault, despite his past successes elsewhere, it was ALL on him.

Since the new year, we have gone FOURTEEN games without giving up a shorthanded goal, a truly remarkable occurence, no matter how biased or jaded you might be. A combination of renewed focus and discipline, I can't remember a Leafs team turning it around so abruptly on the PK. The Leafs have only taken TWENTY TWO penalties in those games and that commitment surely provides some credit for the coach. Wilson found 60% of our penalties were stick related, so he highlighted this fact and the team made strides to avoid taking a hand off the stick, etc, a change players have noted. As well, Wilson tried to get the team to recommit, he artifically told the players that 2012 was a fresh start, forget the past, a strategy that has paid off in spades!

The Leafs are still 29th in the league, so abysmal earlier that we'll never "catch up". That said, if you're going to rip a guy over and over and over, you should at least have the capacity for fairness and acknowledge our coach deserves a lot of credit for turning the ship around, the players are buying in, responding and he's adapting. It's all you can ask for from a coach, we now play the PK with pride, it's great to see.

Cue the kneejerk bashing ;)

The Apologist 02-05-2012 08:17 AM

Wrong again. The winning, solid pk and dicipline is ALL on the players. Nothing to do with coaching. Geez, thought that was understood?

SteveV* 02-05-2012 08:21 AM

Until we suck again, then it's all coaching :)

The Apologist 02-05-2012 08:22 AM

well, yeah.......

I can flip a coin 14 times and have it come up heads 14 times.
It is rare and it happens.

I wonder if I can convince people that it is 100% skill on my part and not luck driven.

Yeah the team has been playing better, so we will give him some credit, but on the other hand if was given 4yrs to coach and team and put afew decent games, chances are I would have done so.

So yeah I still want his ass outta Toronto .

Ahh, so if they scored on its coaching, if they kill it off its luck, got it ;)

Well, keep in mind that the team was exactly the same for all four years.

Give the guy some credit & kudos to the OP for the shoutout! I have never been a huge fan of Wilson but one thing I have noticed is at this point of the season when games get as critical as ever, he has his team going balls out 110%, playing disciplined, supporting eachother and acting a team! It's not easy to keep a young dressingroom on the same page and enable this group to bounce back after a tough loss or deal with the crazy pressure of our media and fanbase.

He has done a great job like him or not!

Funny. Because when Wilson was on the bad PK streak when it felt like everything was going in, he said it was bad luck and bad bounces and not skill or strategy problem.

Earth Rocker 02-05-2012 08:45 AM

I have to admit, the teams overall defensive play has really improved as has the discipline and the coach deserves credit for this.

You know your coin analogy, have you heard the one about the monkey and the keyboard?

That's the bottomline for me with this guy, the team has never quit on him, no matter what the effort is there, and that's job one for a coach.

Nope. Vice versa.
According to Wilson if they let a goal in it is bad luck.
And if they kill a PK it is skill.

philadelphiakessel81 02-05-2012 08:50 AM

We are offically 29th in the league on the pk! Moving on up! by then end of Febuary we should be 28th!

Yes, I mentioned that in the OP.

LeafsRReady 02-05-2012 09:25 AM

Wilson definitely deserves some kudos. A legitimate argument can be made, however, that it took until the season was almost out of control before drastic measures were taken to fix the PK and to have the team start playing responsibly on the defensive side. Going into the season it was paramount that the PK and GA in general had to be fixed and everyone knew it. It just seemed to take Wilson a little longer than most to realize it.
