Anthony Stewart (cleared)

According to TSN and Chip:

Per TSN, Canes place Anthony Stewart on waivers.

If he is claimed, the Canes are -1 forward. Charlotte is at home and the Canes are on the way to Anaheim. Sure someone could fly cross country, but why return Nash then? Have to think something is on the horizon.

Of course, they could just roll 7 defensemen.

Well, if they don't return Nash today and turn out not to need him, he flies round trip NC to CA for no reason. Does it make more sense to fly Nash out tomorrow if he is needed?

A trade for multiple NHL contracts is also possible, as is a different waiver claim (Hamill?)

This really does make me think that something is brewing. I kinda just want us to finally make a trade that will help us get something back. We haven't called up Dadonov yet so we really haven't seen anything new since Spacek came over

Psyduck 02-06-2012 11:27 AM

You have to think that a team will claim Stewart. He's not THAT bad.

Maybe we're about to.

Guerzy 02-06-2012 11:28 AM

How unlucky is that? 3 of the 4 forward/defence offseason acquisitions did not pan out. (Ponikarovsky, Stewart and Kaberle).

Hope JR takes some of the blame in the season ending presser.

To his defense, the pool was pretty bad last offseason for a budget minded team.

True, but the initial plan was always to keep that extra forward on the trip. So unless JR has changed his mind several times (entirely possible), this can't be the last move before Wednesday.

And yeah, I also think it's pretty likely Stewart gets claimed.

i really think STL would be smart to add him, see if he can play a nice 4th line role and perhaps spark both brothers, but more importantly sparking Chris.

sorry to see Stewie waived, but happy that CAR gave him a shot.

looking forward to seeing what guys like Dadanov and Tlusty can grow into with CAR.

Don't get this.

impeach estaalo 02-06-2012 12:01 PM

Jim Rutherford FA signings since 2006. One-way contracts only.

Tanabe - bought out
Grahame - waived, sent to AHL
Letowski - lol
Hamilton - bought out
Melichar - waived, sent to AHL, traded
Yelle - waived
Alberts - traded
Kostopolous - traded
Kaberle - traded
Ponikarovsky - traded
Stewart - waived

This is just off the top of my head, so I'm sure I'm missing somebody.

Not overly surprising IMO. I could speculate and come up with various rational reasons.

- Getting ready for a trade?
- Muller cleaning house of guys that don't fit in what he's trying to do?
- After becoming a 4th liner, Stewart wanting out. After trying unsuccessfully to trade him, JR waiving him to give him a chance to catch on elsewhere?
- JR figuring it isn't workout out so setting him free to make room for a guy from Charlotte?

etc...

We don't know what the reason is, but not hard to come up with some possible reasons.

Wolfpuck 02-06-2012 12:12 PM

**** the bed over the summer, then clean up 6 months later when the season is shot to hell? Some plan, JR.

Best of luck to Stewart, wherever he gets picked up.

TheBigKahuna 02-06-2012 12:13 PM

He's been pretty bad. That's why it's happening. This is a wake up call...and if he does indeed get claimed, then JR walks away happy. The guy doesn't use either his speed or size with any regularity. Just another bad reclamation project.

raleighwolf 02-06-2012 12:19 PM

Well, i guess this answers my question if Stewart has a future with the canes.....nope.

I told some people back in the fall, that Stewart best not buy a house in Raleigh. I predicted he'd be gone before season's end. He and/or Ponikarovski were being sold to the fans as Cole replacements. It was laughable then, and just sad now.

Yeah, i saw Poni as more of a band-aid fix for cole leaving. I was hoping Stewart could stick around playing with some grit and grind. oh well. hopefully JR's got something up his sleeve...

Anton Dubinchuk 02-06-2012 12:43 PM

I have to say, I will genuinely miss Stewart's happy/humpy dance with Ward at the end of wins. That's something I'll likely never see again.

I was just thinking about that.

For posterity. Assuming he gets claimed, so long Eh Stew, and happy humping wherever you may wind up.

MD 02-06-2012 01:10 PM

wierd. he just followed me on twitter last night.

caniac247 02-06-2012 01:17 PM

I wonder if JR has a team interested, but didn't want to trade anything for him. Only thing I can think of. He wasn't hurting us and he seems like a good teammate inviting the young ones over for dinner all the time, etc. And its not like he cost much. He's on a 4th line role, I seriously doubt its to make room for Dalpe or Boychuk who aren't 4th line players and Muller has yet to play them in that capacity, don't see him doing it now.

Then sending Nash down. Just yesterday their plan was to carry an extra forward. Now that's changed, why? Sure they could call up someone else, but as much as this team pinches pennies, it would make sense for that call up to fly out with the team today rather than make the cross country trek tomorrow.

I think something else is up, or rather, I wish something else is up.

dammit100 02-06-2012 01:18 PM

^^going for a humblebrag RT as well?

Well, at first it was being sold as "Poni and Stew" will replace Cole, or at least his goals. But JR quickly backtracked on that idea. Maurice wasn't going to get anything out of them, and them Muller tried. Both are filler for budget teams, and not much else in my opinion. But it still bothers me that JR took the money he gave Kaberle, Brent, Poni and Stewart.....and could have signed or traded for a really high end player. I'd rather have 1 6 million dollar player than those 4...and fill the remaining gaps with Checkers. Not one of those 4 guys does anything that one of the Checkers can't do just as well.
