Prospal Signs 1-Year Extension

Am I the only one surprised by this re-signing?? I like Vinny, but I was sure he'd be part of the sell-off at the deadline.

Prospal Extended 2.5 Mil

Just saw it on the mains. Great deal

Oh my, that is a very surprising development.

650X2 02-08-2012 09:26 AM

I like it but confused at the same time. Maybe Vinny wants more stability for his family than a cup run?

As awful as it would but is he worth more at the end of the month now?

Matt Foley 02-08-2012 09:27 AM

Wow; I wasn't expecting that. At all. Not even a little.

alphafox 02-08-2012 09:28 AM

Really surprised at this, happily surprised. But that said seems to be an indicator that we are going to stand pat at the deadline (No Nash or Carter trades) or we are going full rebuild and want Prospal to teach the kids. Not sure which one I prefer...

CBJSprague24 02-08-2012 09:30 AM

I am stunned.

I am ecstatic. :yo:

The fact that he was likely going to be dealt and, instead, volunteered to stay with the team, is remarkable & says a lot about him. Tie that in with the influence he's had on other players (Dorsett especially, who has said several times that he's upped his game by watching Vinny play), and we've got a damn quality piece that will stick around for at least a year.

Welcome back, Vinny. Thank you.

blahblah 02-08-2012 09:30 AM

This one has me scratching my head.. We could have always pulled a Dougie Weight and re-signed him after the year and took the assets, so that you could give Prospal a chance at the Cup.

Very strange.

Prospal must have not wanted to deal with FA more than he wanted the playoffs this year (and quite likely next).

650X2 02-08-2012 09:33 AM

Maybe it is a move to begin to change the culture. Prospal is obviously a guy that we need in there. We likely would have only got a 2nd round pick for him.

1857 Howitzer 02-08-2012 09:33 AM

Very interesting for so many reasons.

BJFan1 02-08-2012 09:34 AM

My first thought... Wow. I can't believe he would want to re-sign here.

Then I thought... Wait, maybe a potential trade partner wanted him signed through next season as part of the deal. :sarcasm:

Either way, good for him.

Whether he stays or goes, I wish him the best going forward in his career.

EDIT*** After seeing more information come out... no-trade clause, and the gentlemen's agreement... Prospal = classy guy. Welcome to Columbus for the stay.

From Portzline's twiiter... "Prospal's deal also includes a "gentleman's agreement" w #CBJ. He'll keep signing 1-year deals through the rest of his career, then take on a position with the organization. "His value goes way beyond the points," GM Scott Howson tell Dispatch."

Wow. :yo:

Mayor Bee 02-08-2012 09:34 AM

Didn't see this one coming.

Maybe he thinks the team is closer to contending than most of us think?

CapnCornelius 02-08-2012 09:35 AM

Prospal's family is happy in Columbus from my understanding.

Mixed emotions on this one. Would have liked to get a prospect and worry about bringing him back in the off-season. But, if the team does go "nuclear" he's the sort of guy you want mentoring younger players.

Matt Foley 02-08-2012 09:36 AM

If the Jackets take the "nuclear" route between now and next season, it's imperative to have some vets on the team who are positive role models on and off the ice and can show the younger players what it takes to win at this level. I view Prospal as one of those guys. We might find out over the next few weeks and months who might not be viewed in that light in the eyes of the org.

650X2 02-08-2012 09:36 AM

I have to think that Prospal asked for this.

And if a player like Prospal asked for an extension of the same value. I think you have to give it to me. Especially given the year the team has had and the year he has had.

From a family viewpoint. He was looking at being traded to a team he doesn't know and then the uncertainty of being a UFA. Somethings are more important than the cup.

mt-svk 02-08-2012 09:37 AM

Great!!! :yo:

cbj21 02-08-2012 09:38 AM

That is huge, great for the Jackets going forward.

650X2 02-08-2012 09:40 AM

No trade clause included. He definitely asked for this extension.

Good sign for CBJ.

v3rs3 02-08-2012 09:41 AM

I love that he's sticking around, good character guy, but in our current affairs I would have loved to get a decent prospect or pick for him. It's nice to have him back though.

Seems like a stretch, but give Prospal the C and trading Nash and Carter before the deadline? I feel like keeping him is a sign that something big might happen.

1857 Howitzer 02-08-2012 09:44 AM

“@Aportzline: #CBJ RW Vinny Prospal's extension is worth $2.5 million, and includes a no-trade clause.”

I like it, but at the same time makes me think Howson is going to be around a long time lol.

CBJBrassard16 02-08-2012 09:50 AM

Purely a move to keep the good nature in the room. He's perfect for the retool with new players and our guys will look up to him. Nash C Umberger and Prospal split the

Wait, is that possibly true? I thought there was no chance he'd resign with this bumbling bunch of losers? Maybe he's come to like the country club?

Seriously, I'll be glad to have him back (though his play has slowed considerably, in recent games).

KallioWeHardlyKnewYe 02-08-2012 09:52 AM

A "position within the organization" for Prospal?

Don't let the door hit ya where the lord split ya Priest.

Vinny!!! Hell yes!!!
