Derek Stepan Appreciation thread

Not sure if there has ever been one of these for Stepan but I really think this kid is going to a star in this leauge at some point. I just read something that said he is now 8th overall in the NHL with a plus 23. Pretty impressive for a 21 year old kid.

It seems that he does alot of things for this team that goes unnoticed. I hope he is a Ranger for a long time because i love watching him play.

Ya know, I don't think there was ever a Stepan Appreciate Thread. :sarcasm:

In any event, he looks to be developing into a first line center. 35 points in 52 games, which is on pace for 55 points over 82 games, which is 10 points more than he had last year.

There are 90 first liners (30 teams time 3 first liners per team), and Stepan is #88 in scoring right now. That would make him a borderline first liner.

If he improves a little more next year to get 60+ points, I'd say that's a first line center performance.

He should be a good #2 for a lot of years ...we are still looking for a # 1.

Miller Time NYR 02-10-2012 08:16 AM

are we back to making one of these every time someone has a good game

We have a 1a center and 1b center situation as far as I'm concerned right now.

Callagraves 02-11-2012 01:17 AM

2nd year of playing, looking for 60 points.

This kid is going to be a monster for us. I'm expecting an all-star.

Yep. I remember that awesome pass to Gabby against Winnipeg at the Garden. Right through the Dman.

It's amazing how many interceptions he's had leading directly to a scoring chance. I also have been quite impressed with his skating in tight areas. It still looks pretty awkward but he gets the job done. He's probably our smartest forward as well. Great player

If there ever was a player who really deserved an appreciation thread it's Derek Stepan.

aemoreira1981 02-12-2012 04:43 PM

I'll give appreciation here too---he has only gotten better. He and the rest of the young players have made me forgive Glen Sather completely for the way he used to run the organization.

Mio41 02-13-2012 10:38 AM

I think Steps physical game is underrated

Crease 02-13-2012 10:52 AM

Much better than I thought he would be at this stage in his career. I keep forgetting how young he is.

We are very spoiled with the level of young talent on this team right now. Remember the days of getting excited over Josef Balej?

Agreed. There are only a dozen or so "Hands-down number one center no-matter-what" centers in the NHL. We're not going to get one of those (90% of those guys are such because their teams tanked to get one), so this is a very good consolation prize.

for someone his size he wins an amazing amount of board battles; and for someone who is not a great skater, he gets on guys and ties them up for turnovers all the time. His IQ is off the charts.

Bleed Ranger Blue 02-13-2012 12:56 PM

The guy he reminds me a lot of is....Brad Richards.

Both of these guys should not be upper-echelon centers because neither possess stunning physical tools. But both of them have great hockey minds/IQ's.

showtime8 02-13-2012 12:59 PM

I was watching the HBO series with him in it and he's got a smoke show of a girlfriend. Top tier in the league.

^^^ THIS

While i was pumping Stepan's tires last year, i was telling a lot of my colleges @work/on-ice that he reminds me Richie, and he's only going to get better!

yep but much better defensively. We can only hope he puts up Richards numbers for as long as he has. If he can become a 20+ goal 40-50 assist guy that would be great Hopefully he gets better on his faceoffs as well.

Fanned On It 02-14-2012 05:25 AM

Yeah the kid has a real nice snapper, he just needs to get in position and take it more often... he can snipe if given the opportunity. I've also seen him come in the clutch on a shootout this season, which is always nice.

Stepanformayor* 02-19-2012 11:26 PM

Great to see this kid get rewarded for all the little things that he does for this team. Does he ever stop smiling?

ThirdEye 02-19-2012 11:33 PM

I see some Richards in him, but as it is Richards is a much smoother skater. Stepan's shot is also not as hard or accurate as Richards'. Stepan is better defensively though... and not by a little

Machinehead 02-19-2012 11:40 PM

Let me just say that in this Derek Stepan Appreciation Thread that I appreciate Derek Stepan.

The way his overall game has improved by leaps and bounds is so impressive. Great defense, much more physical than last year, and tremendous in the playmaking department. All are vast improvements over last season. And as we already saw last year he can score a little too. There's little doubt left he'll be a top 6 forward, if any.
