If it comes down to having only one of them: MDZ or McD?

I could see them both demanding big contracts in the next couple of years, and I'm not saying it's impossible to keep both of them because it's hard to predict the cap in today's ever changing game. So let's just say we could only keep one. Which one is top priority?

Poozer 02-10-2012 01:34 PM

I think McD is the better overall player and is much more consistent, plus I think his offensive game will begin to show more and more.

That said, MDZ is the only guy we really have in the young offensive-defense man role.

I still voted for McD.

Rangers Fail 02-10-2012 01:35 PM

McDonagh. Better defensively, and definately has the offensive toolbox. I see him having a breakout offensive season next year.
Edit: here are Brian Leetch's thoughts about McD:

it shouldnt be hard to sign two top 4 defensemen to top 4 contracts, sather just needs to plan ahead and keep the space open, which is exactly what everyone here cant seam to understand we need to do since people want to sign guys like parise and weber to 7+mill contracts which is exactly how u put yourself in a situation that has u shipping out homegrown talent because u went big on an aging free agent. just my thoughts.

i love them both but who knows what the defense will look like in 2-3 years, hell we had people thinking bickel would be a staple on this team for years now hes watching from up top, if d-mac comes in playing stellar mdz is our only real offensive defensemen, thats deffinitally something to take into account. so im not going to vote here

jniklast 02-10-2012 02:05 PM

You have to keep both. I don't think any of our top 4 (Girardi, Staal, McD, MDZ) will ever demand real superstar money, so it should be possible.

Kel Varnsen 02-10-2012 02:12 PM

****, what a downer thread. Why do you want to talk about something like this right now?

WhipNash27 02-10-2012 02:18 PM

I honestly think that McD will be better than Staal.

Inferno 02-10-2012 02:19 PM

Ryan McDonagh. AINEC...and this is despite MDZ being a frikkin amazing defenseman for us. That's how good McD has been.

I agree with this. Not sure he isnt already.

Pizza 02-10-2012 03:28 PM

I'm not giving up either right now. Sorry.

Giacomin 02-10-2012 03:35 PM

They are both going to be studs! I think they will both be All-Stars in the next 2-3 years. It is nice having some good young talent for a change.:yo:

qft.

Jabroni 02-10-2012 03:45 PM

McDonagh, but keep both.

Agreed with poster above.

Amazing Kreiderman 02-10-2012 03:47 PM

If I HAVE to pick one, it's easy. I will go for McD. Better defensively, more potential and I have to pick McD, since his name is the one on my WC jersey ;)

beastly115 02-10-2012 03:49 PM

Way too early to even consider this. Why make this decision now when they each have years more of development. My opinion is to wait and see how each pans out and then decide which one to keep.

True.

The one good thing about not having a Weber, Chara, or a Suter is you dont have to pay a Weber, Chara, or a Suter.

KreiMeARiver* 02-10-2012 04:05 PM

I refuse to vote.

Muh 02-10-2012 04:11 PM

Both.

I really want to say MDZ, cause I love this game. But McD is already a rock on D, and I see plenty of room for improvement offensively.

Obviously it is not going to happen, but if it came down to have to keep just one of all our Dmen, McD would be my choice.

outlaw52 02-10-2012 04:16 PM

they both have to stay. that said mcd is the best new york ranger defenceman hands down..imo of course. :naughty:

...or a Redden, lol.

bobbop 02-10-2012 04:22 PM

This thread ought to be titled "Sophie's Choice"

Both staying. I expect both to sign Letang type contracts in the next two summers.

Figured I'd throw it out there while we're in first place cause it'll be even more depressing when their contracts run out

But seriously though, I didn't mean for it to be a downer thread, just thought it would be interesting to see how Rangers nation valued the two relative to one another.
