Chris Tanev called up - Feb 16/2012

per @VanCanucks.

thepuckmonster 02-16-2012 04:55 PM

Yay Tanev!

Bobby Lou 02-16-2012 04:57 PM

I like how we basically upgrade our bottom-pairing on the right-side every time this guy is called up. That's saying something.

xtr3m 02-16-2012 05:01 PM

Does it mean that Ballard is out for a while?

Yes. He's being put on IR.

KISSland 02-16-2012 05:04 PM

Obviously Alberts has been traded. :sarcasm:

Good to see he's called up. I'd say he's getting a stint here to see how well he plays if we need to make another move or not. Also to get Alberts out of the line-up.

Is that certain he's going on LTIR? I thought just IR?

That certainly would put him out of any trade talks for this upcoming deadline. Which probably is a good thing anyways, Gillis probably only intends to make Higgins/Lapierre type moves for players who could outperform their contracts. Booth was probably his big move for the year.

Smooth Gillis smooth, what with concussions being hard to diagnose and stuff he could be out all year, we just don't know, so it's best to use his cap space at the deadline just in case he doesn't make it back. Deal with the consequences of him getting healthy later. ;)

^ How much relief will we be getting at the deadline?

Ballard makes $4.2m so that'd be a yearly salary $4.2m + whatever have banked works out to on a prorated basis.

Wetcoaster 02-16-2012 05:14 PM

Has anyone a link on the Ballard IR/LTIR move? According to reports Ballard was skating today.

VanCanucks Vancouver Canucks
Media Release: Chris Tanev has been recalled from the Chicago Wolves of the AHL.

Ben Kuzma on the Tanev recall tweets:
benkuzma #Canucks recalling Tanev brings instant relief to right side on third pairing, but heightens worry that Ballard may have a concussion.

benkuzma Encouraging that Ballard skated today to see how neck reacts. As for Tanev, believe this was the plan all along. Get kid up for long run.

benkuzma Always liked Tanev-Ballard as a third pairing, always worried about Alberts-Rome.
And Jim Jamieson:
JamiesonCanucks #Canucks recall Chris Tanev from Chicago. Concern over Ballard's injury?

JamiesonCanucks #Canucks. Tanev will help puck movement out of the Canucks' end, which has been a problem at times.

Looks like it's just IR as per Kristin Reid. So that means he can return at any time right? That makes more sense since Ballard did skate today to test out his injury.

Kristin Reid @reidder
Canucks recall Tanev with Ballard going on IR with that concussion/ neck problems.

Sorry you're correct. I thought the initial tweet said LTIR. It's just IR.

LiquidSnake* 02-16-2012 05:20 PM

LTIR is when the player can't play for 10 reg season games or 24 days. Not sure how that would work if he's practicing.

Lucbourdon 02-16-2012 05:21 PM

How much money does this save the canucks at the deadline?

Bgav 02-16-2012 05:25 PM

So he's up for good now?

Petey Cee 02-16-2012 05:27 PM

None. The Canucks added salary with Tanev's call-up.

0 since it's LTIR. And even when it is LTIR you just get relief.

Example

Cap hit limit = 10 Million
Team Cap hit = 10 Million
Ballard Contract = 2
Ballard put on LTIR
Team Cap Hit Limit = 10 Million + 2 LTIR.

Edit: It actually goes deeper than this; it depends on what your Starting Team Roster submission was. They tally up a total amount at the beginning of the year. Teams are RARELY ever 100% at the max cap; so you'd only get relief if the cap hit of the injured player went beyond the cap hit, but also an extra roster spot if they are put on IR or LTIR.

So to use the example above...

Cap hit limit = 10 Million
Team Cap hit = 9 Million
Ballard Contract = 2
Ballard put on LTIR
Team Cap Hit Limit = 11 Million.

You'll remember a few years past Canucks did they, they sent a few players to the AHL and recalled others to play with the numbers to get as close to the cap ceiling as possible.

DennisReynolds 02-16-2012 05:35 PM

Poor Ballard, he was really stepping it up when he was playing. I was really excited for Ballard Tanev pairing.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again when I see Alberts and Rome on a pairing for 3rd line, my response is always

I've actually been liking Alberts more than Rome... everyone once in a while, Mr. Outtanginles thinks he's Bobby Orr or Ray Bourque and tries to make a pass he can't make or skate in a level he can't. Alberts makes mistakes too, but at least he never overdoes it.
