RIP Gary Carter
The Kid.

A great man who helped lead the Mets to the 1986 World Series.

We Mets fans will always remember you.

RIP Gary Carter :-(

Giacomin 02-16-2012 05:16 PM

The Mets got him on my 20th birthday and I remember sitting in freezing Shea Stadium on opening day when he hit a 10th inning homerun off of Neil Allen.
Thanks Gary, for all the memories you are in a better place now:)

I saw Keith was crying on SNY about it. I felt horrible and I wasn't even a baseball fan until last year.

RIP, Gary.

Mio41 02-16-2012 05:27 PM

not old enough to have seen him play, well at least remember him playing, im 22. im not even a met fan, been a yankee fan all of my life. however, i had the opportunity to work with him and get to know him over the years and see what type of man he was. he always treated me with respect, would go out of his way to do things he didnt have to do for my father and myself. he was also just a great family man. just a person who will be dearly missed. condolences to his family, friends and fans

Crease 02-16-2012 05:35 PM

A sad day. RIP, Kid. For Met fans, that '86 team was special. But, for the fans of every other baseball team, they were Public Enemy #1. They were HATED that year. And Carter was thought of with disdain. So imagine the glee of non-Met fans when the big bad Mets were down to their last strike, and it was Gary Carter at the plate. Those smug, arrogant New Yorkers would be put in their place. Carter wouldn't let that happen.

God bless you, Gary Carter

Keith Hernandez is my favorite baseball player of all time. But Gary Carter was the first reason I fell in love with the Mets back in mid 1985. Such a glass act, such a great player. RIP Kid, you will be missed.

What a terrible offseason for the Mets. A bleak future. Now a huge loss from the past.

KreiMeARiver* 02-16-2012 07:25 PM

As if the Mets couldn't look any worse; they actually do for not honoring Carter. The Wilpons have no business owning a team.

RIP Gary. I had dinner at the table next to him with my then-girlfriend at Mo's New York Grill (Rivera's Place) in New Rochelle back in 2006.

What a shame. Nature took my step-dad in the same exact way.

RIP Gary. This makes me really really sad. Gary was my ultimate childhood sports idol growing up. I was 5 when they won and even before I started following the Rangers and hockey, the Mets and Gary Carter in particular were my first love. My father is a 2 time cancer survivor and it has aged him tremendously in the span of 8 or so years, I fear for him every time he has a checkup.

I'm a Yankees fan, and am not old enough to have seen him play. But from the stories I heard he was an absolute class act, and absolutely loved playing baseball.

RIP Gary.

Cheers to the kid from a Yankees fan, but more importantly a New Yorker

farewell to a warrior from a Yankee fan who respects what and who he was.

R.I.P Gary

That whole mid late 80s Mets Era was special and Gary was the glue, the veteran who held it all together (along with Keith). Gave it his all on the field. Was a great ambassador for the game and always gave off a good and positive vibe in interviews.

Too young to go. We will always remember you Kid :yo:

by me.

I never got to see him play, but from the video and from what I read, he was a tremendous athlete. Guy was the heart and soul of those teams in the 80's.

Brooklyn Ranger 02-16-2012 10:53 PM

One of my favorite Mets.

DM23BK30 02-17-2012 08:06 AM

Gary was cut from a different cloth. Never in my life have I ever seen a guy play all star games like it was game 7 of the World Series.

That's why I wasn't surprised with what he did in game 6. I watched every pitch of that entire 1986 season and it was truly amazing to see the best catcher in baseball handle the best pitching staff and bullpen in baseball.

In 7 of 9 seasons, he caught over 145 games. One year, he caught 159 games.

That was a brilliant trade by Cashen. It wasn't as lopsided at the time. Fitzy was an all-rookie catcher, Youmans was a Dwight Gooden clone, and Hubie was a huge fan favorite coming off a career season.

But it was obviously a great trade.

My favorite Carter memory was easily his GW hit in Game 5 of the NLCS. He had been really struggling that series and it came two days after Dykstras game winning homer (yes, they werent called "walk offs back then).

Honorable mention was my first All Star Game -- 1979 in the Kingdome. Dave Parker threw a laser to home plate and Kid made an amazing tag to nail Brian Downing (a one of the greatest Yankee killers of all time)

DM23BK30 02-17-2012 08:10 AM

Speaking of Cobra...why is he not in the hall of Fame???? Jesus Christ what a player.
