TSN 990: As per a Habs executive they are NOT re-building

As per Tony Marinaro on TSN 990 at 8:10 AM this morning, the Habs are NOT re-building and beleive that all they have to do is re-tool or tweek.

Tony say's that Montreal has the following 4 components and need a few more to build on.

Carey Price = Franchise goalie
PK Subban = Star defenseman
Max Paciopretty = Top line winger
David Desharnais = PP and Faceoff Specialist

So...

If there is NO re-build, who do we build around?

I'm sure that's what most teams would do in that situation. We are not the Calgary Flames or Columbus Blue Jackets. We have a lot of good pieces to build with, just need a couple more totake a huge step forward.

Habs 4 Life 02-17-2012 07:21 AM

Which is perfect cause we don't need a full rebuild

We have enough good pieces to build around and move forward with, now sell the junk you don't want back, Gill, Kaberle, Campoli, Darche, Moen, Kostitsyn, Nokaleinen, who ever you don't want returning to this hockey club going forward get rid of now!

Pacioretty
Desharnais
Subban
Emelin
Gorges
Price
Eller

I build around this.

sharks9 02-17-2012 07:22 AM

Perfect. If we do a good job of re-tooling at the deadline and during free agency we'll be back in the playoffs next year.

EmelinHipCheck 02-17-2012 07:23 AM

100% fine with that, especially since we have the young core to build around. Get rid of the overrated vets and replace them with some performing players.

The Kremelin Wall* 02-17-2012 07:26 AM

Desharnais is a faceoff specialist? Hahaahahahahahaahaa

specialist may be a strong word but considering that after 2 months he was below 40% and that he's now at 50... I'd say he became a good FO guy, he's no Yannick Perreault though...

No he's not.

Unless if having a 50.1% in faceoffs is considered as a specialist.

WeThreeKings 02-17-2012 07:38 AM

Of course. We are all saying that. Doesn't mean we can't trim the fat.

Sell at deadline:
Moen
Gill
Campoli

Try to sell at deadline:
Kaberle
Nokelainen
Darche
Bourque

Try to trade for a good return:
Gionta

Demote to Minors:
Scott Gomez.

Jee 02-17-2012 07:45 AM

I'm fine with this.

I'd keep Moen and Kostitsyn though.

Myron Gaines* 02-17-2012 07:48 AM

We don't need a rebuild, we need to solidify our top pairing, bottom 9 and add an elite scorer. The thing is that this franchise doesn't seem to wanna give up too much, so they settle with "OKAY" players.

Perrah 02-17-2012 07:49 AM

Id agree it isnt a rebuild, more of a retool but the pieces missing are the prize ppg player and if they acquire a bonafide #1 C who goes DD, Pleks or Eller? Also a #1 D man if markov is unable to play.

If Gionta is traded it will not be at the deadline as he ain't coming back and will not be able to help anyone out. Maybe the draft but at 5 million it will not be easy to move especially since people are saying the cap might go down for next year

Watsatheo 02-17-2012 07:54 AM

Desharnais is our faceoff specialist? Sweet.

couris 02-17-2012 07:55 AM

We need to find at least a #1 Center and Defense.:yo:

Agnostic 02-17-2012 08:08 AM

writing this season off and getting a player of high talent in the draft should not be confused with "rebuilding".

Success is always close when you measure success as placing 8th in your conference.

I missed what Tony said this morning, but I think Pierre McGuire said this exact thing on Melnyk's show earlier this week. So I don't know why Marinaro is trying to pass this off as what an executive told him, when it was on the radio earlier this week. I guess he could pass it off as independent source telling him what McGuire was speculating on...seems a little fishy though.

I don't think you have stressed that point enough. One more time earl.

It's obvious habs will not rebuild, they don't need to.

Why is Moen fat ? He is a great 3-4 line player. I don't get why people here don't want him back. Yet, 29 other GM's would love to have him in their lineup yet a few Habs fans want to get rid if him.

Ford Prefect 02-17-2012 08:16 AM

I think this a completely useless proposition. Current management may thing the direction is a retool, but I think the consensus is that they are going to get axed at the end of the year. I think it is premature to outright say that there will be no rebuild. The question really to ask is whether Molson is going to be the ***** he has portrayed himself to be, or grow a set and do what is in the best long term interests of the club. Knowing how ownership has acted for the last 20 years, they are content to allow the team to languish in mediocrity, as long as it is fighting for the last playoff spot. They won't take the Nordiques/Penguins/Capitals/Blackhawks model and suck for a few years, acquire the franchise players, and be Cup contenders for a decade or more.

The annual reminder the team provides is not enough for some people.

This team is years away from contention, if it ever manages to get there, and it won't be done with current management and more than a few current players.

Probably because he has played in our top 1~2 lines so many times and that's what people seem to remember, but I do agree, he's a great 3rd line player that can be put into the top 2 lines if there's injuries.

I'd keep Moen & Kostitsyn.

I'd move at the deadline or at the draft or in Gomez's case any time:

Gill
Kaberle
Campoli
Nokie
Darche
Gomez
Gionta

Maybe it's Tony's way of saying that McGuire is the next GM:naughty:
