Jake Gardiner may have to be included as part of a package for Rick Nash

VANCOUVER—The issue with Jake Gardiner, as it was 12 months ago, is trying to accurately evaluate his upside.

As in how good this kid may be.

The Leafs had to do that last year when they were browsing through the prospect chart of the Anaheim Ducks and ultimately landed Gardiner along with Joffrey Lupul in exchange for Francois Beauchemin.

Now, as they eye the possibility of a deal with Columbus to try and acquire Rick Nash, again the issue of the 21-year-old blueliner’s ultimate potential is under scrutiny.

And the reality is the Leafs don’t really have an answer.

They’re not exactly sure what they have.

“He’s one of those guys who you watch and you think he’s not trying that hard,” said Leaf head coach Ron Wilson. “Then you get down to ice level and you see how fast he’s going. Then you know you have a special player with special abilities.”

Gardiner hit a rough spot partway through the season, perhaps when he was feeling for the first time the burden of the NHL season, but has taken off again, including a stellar performance Wednesday in Edmonton as the Leafs snapped a four-game losing streak.
Quote:

Columbus GM Scott Howson, meanwhile, is in a difficult spot as he tries to find a deal for Nash, and it’s more than possible the big winger won’t go anywhere prior to the Feb. 27 deadline. He might not want to deal with Leaf GM Brian Burke, who fleeced Calgary on the Dion Phaneuf deal and appears to have gotten the best of his pal Bob Murray on the Gardiner swap between the Leafs and Ducks.

Gardiner, of course, wouldn’t be enough on his own to get a deal done with the Blue Jackets. This is likely to be one of those volume deals rather than a straight talent/contract swap — Nash for Phil Kessel? — and so the names of Nazem Kadri, Tyler Biggs and Matt Frattin are also likely to come up in the conversations.

But indications are that Gardiner is more appealing to the Blue Jackets than Schenn, who was a healthy scratch against the Oilers but will rejoin the lineup as the Leafs try to defeat Vancouver on Saturday for the first time since 2003 after nine straight losses.

Gardiner is leading all first-year defencemen in scoring and may end up with one of the spots on the NHL all-rookie team at year’s end. Averaging more than 21 minutes per game, he’s a plus-6 and scored his third goal of the season in Edmonton on a rocket that Nikolai Khabibulin was helpless to stop.

playoffs is what burke wants, to save his friends job and what most leaf fans want

Don't really want Rick Nash that badly. If a young defenseman goes, I'd rather it be Schenn and not Gardiner, and 2012 first is untouchable.

are you ok with the leafs not making the playoffs?

Gorbo 02-17-2012 11:06 PM

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Trade him, he'll become a star.

Keep him and he'll be #4 on the marlies this time next year.

How is the 2012 1st untouchable? Were not a lottery team anymore and Burke has said before that he would gladly trade the 2012 1st if it makes the leafs a more dangerous team come playoff time (as long as the player they get is not a rental or too old I assume).

p.l.f. 02-17-2012 11:10 PM

where do we fit in all these Ds?

gunnarsson phaneuf
liles franson
gardiner schenn

you would think 2 may have to go, none are meant to stay 3rd pairing

Edgeworth* 02-17-2012 11:13 PM

if Gardiner goes then the 1st needs to stay. Don't like these all-in plans.

But seriously Toronto benefits from sitting and waiting. Nash replaces MacArthur who hasn't been doing bad, while hogging up cap space we need to re-sign Kulie, Grabo, Franson, etc. etc.

cup67 02-17-2012 11:13 PM

nash, brassard, 1st 2012
for
lupul, gardiner, colbourn, holzer, 1st 2012

Come on Leafs keep your prospects. Maybe Bozak will grow into a better player and fill that top line role.

The Viper 02-17-2012 11:17 PM

do not trade him

Certain people set up silly precedents like these, so they can continue their endless whining later if the pick gets moved.

It's a lost cause, if they keep the picks and don't get Nash; the same users will whine that they should have gone all in for Nash no matter the costs. :shakehead

You're not serious, right?

Everlong 02-17-2012 11:22 PM

Don't really want Nash tbh, especially when Gardiner is in the package.

Bozak isn't a prospect.

yeahokbuddy 02-17-2012 11:24 PM

It's spelled Colborne, come on people.

Schennanigans 02-17-2012 11:24 PM

Forget Nash. Trading Gardiner shouldn't be considered. If he has to be included than move on.

Rare Jewel 02-17-2012 11:25 PM

Yea, No thanks.

Not worried about Nash coming here Burke is a smart guy, he wont sacrifice all of his work for one big name with a high cap hit that wont make us a contender.
