Rangers' Affiliates Undefeated!

The Wolfpack is undefeated at 5-0.

The Checkers are undeated at 3-0, with all wins on the road.

And the Checkers' unofficial affiliate in the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL), the Jacksonville Barracudas (coached by Ron Duguay) won their season opener against the Winston-Salem Polar Twins.

The new SPHL seems to be merger of the surviving franchises from the defunct SEHL and WHA2. Just part of the consolidation of minor leagues that's been going on the last few years.

Anyhoo, the 'Cudas have Mike Wirll on the roster. I thought he was up in Hartford after being recalled from Charlotte. MacIntyre and Wirll both played in games for Jacksonille last year.

this is funny as hell.
We will destroy in the AHL this year and then when the lockout ends, watch us go winless the first 20 days. At least we finally have something to brag about for once.

Hope I didn't jinx the teams tonight.

Winson-Salem Polar Twins. What a franchise name!

NYR469 10-30-2004 11:47 PM

make it 6-0 & 4-0 now

bmoak 10-31-2004 08:26 PM

And 2-0 as the Barracudas beat the Fire Ants. 2 goals for Mike Wirll.

Is he still Rangers' property? If so are there any other prospects on the team? Also, what league is this?

NYR469 10-31-2004 09:12 PM

both charlotte and hartford have set franchise records for wins to start a season

actually i don't think wirll was ever signed by the rangers. he was in camp on a tryout last year and i believe he was signed by hartford, but not the rangers. so he's in the system but not technically rangers property

do you know who is playing for the barracudas?? their site doesn't have a roster yet

Fish 10-31-2004 09:20 PM

Wirll is not Rangers property, but he has a contract with Hartford.

So does that mean that the only NHL team able to purchase his contract is the Rangers?

no as far as the nhl is concerned he is a free agent and can sign with anyone...really all it means is that the rangers can call him up to play in charlotte or hartford, but he'd have to be signed to a nhl contract before he could play in ny

NYR469 10-31-2004 10:08 PM

found jacksonville's roster at http://www.thesphl.com

it appears that currently mike wirll is the only guy on the team with hartford/ny ties

last year wirll and macintyre spent time in jacksonville, but both also spent more time in charlotte then jacksonville. so we might still see some guys playing there during the year...brandon snee also played in jacksonville last year, but i don't think he's rangers property anymore

Neither does the Checkers website!
Luckily, the roster is kept here on the SPHL site.

Mike Wirll is the only organization guy in Jacksonville. MacIntyre and Wirll spent some time there last season. Now that Helminen and Falardeau have been sent down, mavbe Charlotte will try to stash another guy down there. The thing is, unlike players under contract ot the Pack or the Rangers, Checkers players are technically released by the Checkers and signed by the 'Cudas, and released players are free to sign elsewhere.

NYR469 10-31-2004 11:33 PM

just notice that despite their 6-0 record the pack aren't even in 1st place in their division...manchester won today to improve to 7-0 (hartford doesn't play them till dec 5th)
