Dean Lombardi on the Hot Seat

This could be the most important week of Dean Lombardi's six seasons as general manager of the Kings.

If he acquires a high-impact scorer by the trade deadline of noon Pacific time Monday, he can salvage a season that began with high expectations but descended into a grim battle to score goals and make the playoffs.

Failure to reach the postseason could cost Lombardi his job and there would be no reason to argue he should stay.

The only elite player available and able to deliver the necessary scoring jolt is Columbus left wing Rick Nash, who reportedly listed the Kings among teams he'd be willing to join in a trade. The Blue Jackets are asking a lot for him. It's up to Lombardi to negotiate an acceptable price, and that's an iffy proposition.

Columbus also offered center Jeff Carter but he's riskier because he's signed through 2021-22 and has sulked since being traded from Philadelphia to Columbus. So it looks like Nash or nothing significant enough to make a difference.

I wish I got paid for such insights.

damacles1156 02-20-2012 11:39 PM

Is anyone else kind of shocked AEG hasn't really said much ?

Live in the Now 02-20-2012 11:44 PM

I'm not, they should stay out of it until they're ready to do something. Not surprised by the opinion in this article, it's much like saying water's wet.

I wish I got paid for reading HF boards and then re-writing it for a newspaper. :)

No, not really. We didn't hear much from them when they cleaned house last time, but it was apparent that Dave Taylor's job was on the line before the ax came down.

Telos 02-20-2012 11:46 PM

Bleh. I can't help but read it in her condescending know-nothing voice... Not that she is wrong.

What are they supposed to say? I don't recall ever having significant contact with them through the media in the regular season, usually it is in the offseason just to "reassure" us that they will spend what it takes and to ask for more money from the fans.

What a ******** article.

Not even a quote or a source to backup what you're spewing. I wouldn't even have published that.
Not trying to defend DL here, but there's also no reson to argue he should go, simply because that's TL/AEG's call, and none have come out and said boo about DL, good or bad. The entire fanbase and media could be calling for his dismissal, it still only matters what AEG says, and thus far it's been nothing.

Plus Carter's a risk because of his contract, but Nash isn't? Nash's might be a few years shorter, but it has a much bigger cap hit. Carter's total cap hit starting next season is $52,727,270 for the remainer of his contract. For Nash, it's $46,800,000. In terms of total actual dollars owed, Nash is due $47,400,000 for the rest of his contract starting next year. For Carter, it's $52 million.

Carter's contract is also front-loaded. He only makes a combined $7 million over the last three years of his deal, while Nash's contract grows slightly each year, maxing out at $8.2 million in the final year.

Carter could actually have some value as a low cost option to get to the salary cap floor for a team like the Islanders towards the end of his contract.

I'm much more comfortable with Carter's contract than Nash's.

LOL. Actually I was expecting her to drop a sledgehammer on this team weeks ago, instead, I feel like she used the rock hammer it took Andy Dufresne 17 years to chip his way out of Shawshank Prison with.

bobafettish* 02-21-2012 12:57 AM

didnt she kind of speed up the process of TM's firing.

johnjm22 02-21-2012 01:05 AM

Good article.

It's not written for people like us.

It's just meant as a brief summary of Lombardi's situation for the casual Kings fan whose skimming through the sports page. Most of us around here are not casual fans.

Herby 02-21-2012 01:05 AM

Does this mean there will be no statue in front of Staples?

She won't be completely satisfied until Lombardi is gone.

I think AEG said plenty this week as in 11% ticket increase and in my opinion it shows they are more into our money than our team

A HOF writer should be capable of doing this.

When they don't talk publicly, is when they are pulling the strings.

Capn Brown 02-21-2012 09:08 AM

I hate the liberal media!!!!

Isn't this the same writer who wanted Brian Boyle to be our 2nd line center? LoL!

The only guy I trust less than Lombardi at this point is Leiweke. So the Kings are in great shape.

Good luck with your writing for TheFourthPeriod.com goals of 2013 Helene. Don't ever let the dream die.

Mats26 02-21-2012 12:09 PM

As long as he's willing to focus on a continued rebuild rather than continue to try to be competitive without the right pieces. Nash is one big piece, but at what cost?

For some reason I can't trust DL in making the right move.

I very much doubt DL would be the one pulling the strings on such a deal.

The Tikkanen 02-21-2012 01:16 PM

I don't remember seeing this seasons struggles on any of Dumbo's pie charts or bar graphs.

Winger23 02-21-2012 01:27 PM

I get the ticket price increase now. Even the Kings are feeling they are going to miss the playoffs, and they will need to make up for that loss income of no playoffs and having to pay another GM and coaching staff during the off-season :sarcasm:

This article is crap. No insight, no thought process behind it. Whatever.
