FriedgeHNIC: Couple other notes: George McPhee says he will not make rental deals, just ones that make long-term sense...

Capitlols 02-25-2012 09:00 PM

Your move GMGM, your move.

Carlzner 02-25-2012 09:03 PM

didn't even let it get to 1k langway.

BrooklynCapsFan 02-25-2012 09:05 PM

Not to be a pedant, but selling a UFA is both a rental deal and a deal that makes long term sense. Just saying.

Backstrom #19 02-25-2012 09:06 PM

Just don't trade Eakin...I just bought the kids game-worn jersey.

Icetime 02-25-2012 09:18 PM

Either GMGM has every reason to believe he won't be fired no matter what happens this year or he knows that he must make the playoffs or else he has a very decent chance of getting the axe.

It's a huge difference in what the Caps actually do over the the next 40+ hours.

RandyHolt 02-25-2012 09:38 PM

Good I don't want rentals, I just want new players.

Was that quote from before this weekend? Since when do we get to know George's plan anyways. Better to hit if you go opposite, so watch him bring in a rental.

Friedman's usually pretty current with his updates but who knows. Could always be a negotiating ploy or a way to justify not picking up any of the rental pieces that will inevitably get moved.

Yes. We don't need to give up assets for rentals. Rentals for rentals is ok if they fit a positional need.

It was tweeted after Hotstove at the second intermission as an outtake. I'm guessing it's from today.

BenRaby31: #Caps Dennis Wideman played a season-low 15:38 in tonight's 4-2 win in Toronto. His previous season low TOI? Last night's 16:42 vs #Habs

Hmm. Hmm.

IafrateOvie34 02-25-2012 09:44 PM

Ha, UFAs for UFAs, not rentals for rentals :).

Not much "Hmm" there for today at least, as he was visibly hurting from that hit behind the net.

Of course being paired with Orlov and not much PP time available is going to keep his minutes down lately regardless.

Speculation re: Brown

Lebrun reported that LA was trying to get Nash and Carter in the same deal. I'm guessing Brown was made available for that package and that's how his name got out. LA would be fools to be actively shopping him. Hell, I wouldn't even make him the centerpiece of a Nash deal.

Well he is redundant now with Green back. I am sure Green is getting his minutes.

I think GMGM has to go for a legit 2C. It helps us now a lot, and still long term.

Yeah. That's some pretty weak speculating by hotstove. His toi is down because daddy's home.

Hotstove didn't mention anything. Ben Raby tweeted the observation. The TOI/role is fully deserved but he's nonetheless a luxury.

• The St. Louis Blues were very interested in signing defenceman Roman Hamrlik last summer before he went to the Washington Capitals for two years. Now he’s on the block? Would the Blues take him? They need forwards more with Jamie Langenbrunner (broken foot) and Alex Steen (concussion) out. With a tight budget of $52 million, it would probably dollars in, dollars out in any deal.
Colaiacovo & Crombeen would be my guess on $$$ dumps but that's not a very appealing combo. Crombeen has another year remaining at $1M. Bradley money. Further sweeteners would be needed and better fits may be elsewhere.
Quote:

• Down two forwards (Nathan Horton and Rich Peverley) the Boston Bruins could go back to the well and deal for Capitals’ Mike Knuble, who played four years for them, up to the lockout, even if he hasn’t scored a goal since Dec. 5.

• One thing about Capitals coach Dale Hunter, he’s not much of a tap-dancer. He hasn’t much liked the play of Tomas Vokoun lately, calling him out in the loss to the Senators this week. “We need some big stops early, that’s part of the game,” said Hunter, who had yanked Vokoun after two quick goals by the Chicago Blackhawks before the misadventure in Ottawa. If Hunter’s saying that publicly, I’d like to hear the grousing behind closed doors....

• I wonder if Randy Carlyle will wind up coaching the Washington Capitals next year, which would be a juicy trade twist since Bruce Boudreau got Carlyle’s job in Anaheim. I don’t see Dale Hunter lasting past this year. “He only agreed to coach until the end of the year to see if they liked him and he liked doing it,” said Hunter’s brother, Dave.

• I didn’t know Alex Ovechkin’s 13-year Caps’ contract had no no-trade provision until July 1, 2014 (year six) until hearing ace Russian scribe Slava Malamud say so on Mark Spector’s show on the Team this week, so they could try and move him this summer or next. It’s a long-shot, but possible considering Ovie’s diminishing returns and fire for the game that was once on high but is now on simmer. His cap hit is $9.5 million.

Capitlols 02-25-2012 10:47 PM

I take what the Edmonton Journal has to say with a grain of salt.

BrooklynCapsFan 02-25-2012 10:47 PM

Stupid Ovechkin proposal.

Backstrom + Koivu. Min gets to move forward with Harding and a new superstar, Washington gets one of the best 1-2 punches at c in the league, plus an all world goalie.

NB - I am drinking.

Green has played what....~60 games the past two seasons

unwise to just assume all is well with him in terms of health this soon

NeilYoung 02-25-2012 11:52 PM

The Edmonton Journal is the biggest waste of time to read

Bure 02-25-2012 11:57 PM

Man I hope we can get Grabovski somehow, not gonna happen though.

CapitalsCupFantasy 02-26-2012 01:12 AM

Caps interested in Sam Gagner....?

I would like that move long term.

Too bad his trade stock went from like 20 to 80 since that 8 point game.

Halpysback 02-26-2012 01:28 AM

Backstrom is not an all world goalie, get real.

If it gets to the point where Ovechkin for Koivu is a fair deal you're completely ****ed

Drake1588 02-26-2012 01:39 AM

I could see one of the first rounders for Gagner being something that McPhee would consider. While he's not a favorite of mine, Gagner provides center depth with Backstrom out. His age is attractive, and the long-term value is certainly better than the rentals that will be changing hands over the next 36 hours.

For a pick, I like it. For one of the Caps' better young players, I do not like it so much. Kuznetsov, Johansson, Orlov should not be negotiable. I'm not as certain where Eakin is concerned.
