Kimmo Timonen and Andrej Meszaros are out indefinitely with lower-body injuries. Kimmo's Iron Man streak ends at 248 games.
MARCH 16:
  • Kubina's injury has been limited to "upper body." Holmgren has said it is unrelated to the puck-to-the-face injury which required stitches March 4 at Washington. Kubina played the following game vs. Detroit but not since.

MESZAROS OUT 6-8 WEEKS
With a complete day off from practice today for the Flyers, general manager Paul Holmgren gave an injury update regarding several players.

The most significant news to come out of the update was to defenseman Andrej Meszaros.

"Andrej Meszaros will undergo surgery to remove a small disc fragment in his lower back on Wednesday, March 21," announced Holmgren. "Surgery will be performed by Dr Alex Vaccaro at Thomas Jefferson Hospital. Andrej will be out 6-8 weeks."

Meszaros had been sidelined for the last nine games. He recorded 25 points (7G-18A) appearing in 62 out of Flyers first 63 games of the season.

Last season, Meszaros appeared in 81 of 82 games for the Flyers, posting eight goals and 32 points and 42 penalty minutes. He recorded a plus-minus rating of plus-30, which tied for the team lead while averaging 21:07 of time-on-ice per game. He was also awarded the Barry Ashbee Trophy as the team's most outstanding defenseman.

During the off-season, Meszaros underwent surgery to repair cartilage in his right wrist.

In addition to Meszaros, Holmgren announced that defenseman Pavel Kubina and forward Max Talbot are day-to-day with upper-body injuries, while defenseman Andreas Lilja is day-to-day with a throat injury.

Heading into tomorrow's game vs. Florida, the Flyers have had 361 man-games lost this season due to injury or illness, 115 of which have been by defensemen.

Lilja is practicing with "Black Aces" types, so look for Meszaros to be in lineup for Game 5 ... even though he was nervous about back inj.

Awesome.

FFS. Not Kimmo. :shakehead

mm6492 03-04-2012 05:19 PM

This is not good....at all....like....at....all......

I want Pronger back :(

PJStock* 03-04-2012 05:21 PM

Lower body? Any word on when these injuries occured? Meszaros had arguably his best game of the season against the Islanders, so it must have happened in practice for him? Maybe his knee? Kimmo has been nursing injury for a while now, but this must be something recent as well. When will this team finally get some good luck??

MiamiScreamingEagles 03-04-2012 05:22 PM

Meszaros left practice yesterday (March 3) early.

Timonen has been banged up for a while, but nothing has been specified.

PJStock* 03-04-2012 05:27 PM

Lets hope it's nothing serious for either of them... Meszaros has been solid of late.

Ugh... seriously, why do teams like the Rangers avoid the injury bug practically all year, while teams like the Flyers and Penguins have had so many guys go down :( I'd like to see how well the supposed 'elite' Rangers would do if they lost Gaborik, Girardi, Callahan etc for extended periods. Is it good luck, or are these guys poorly conditioned?

RoDu 03-04-2012 05:29 PM

oh no that means Lilja:rant:

CanadianFlyer88 03-04-2012 05:29 PM

Indefinitely? Uh-oh.

Some injuries are freakish (Pronger) some are a matter of composite over time (probably what happened with Timonen).

bennysflyers16 03-04-2012 05:34 PM

Hope with Kimmo they are just giving him 4 days off before we head into the marathon of games in next 3 weeks.

RoDu 03-04-2012 05:36 PM

This will be a real test to see what the team is made of

Beef Invictus 03-04-2012 05:36 PM

Well. This isn't good.

StandingCow 03-04-2012 05:37 PM

Oh dear... don't worry guys, just a virus!

SolidSnakeUS 03-04-2012 05:40 PM

I can't believe this is happening...

MiamiScreamingEagles 03-04-2012 05:40 PM

Timonen's injury situation, to my memory, began in the Winter Classic but that was a wrist. It was supposedly aggravated in the following game against Chicago. At one point, he wore a brace.

Umm, have you considered age and other factors?

It's obvious why. Luck has nothing to so with it: Pronger is not only old but has played rough all his career, so everyone knows he would break down by this age.

And I personally have been sounding the alarm about Timo's age and his playing time (having to compensate for Pronger's absence) for awhile now.

The 'backbone' of our D are two oldsters who are both very near the end. So whaddaya expect?

Why? I knew it would happen. Look at Pronger's age and look at Timo's age and connect the dots.

Then what about Mez? Also, Pronger's injury is not age related. A concussion is not age related. You make it sound like age is the reason he's hurt. Jagr was having groin problems but he's been looking good of late. Lidstrom is old and doing well, so is Selanne and so was Recchi before he retired. The age thing is ********. It's a state of mind and if you keep in shape and keep playing the way you play, age doesn't matter.

sa cyred 03-04-2012 05:57 PM

Just imagine if we didnt have Grossman and Kubina. We would have legitimately been fielding an AHL defense.

(Bourdon being hurt)

Carle-Coburn
Gustafsson-Lilja
Lauridsen-Kessel

Lol....

YuioIklo 03-04-2012 06:04 PM

On the positive end, it gives a chance to Kimmo to rest before the playoffs. As long as he's ready by then. We need him to be at 100%.

orange is better 03-04-2012 06:08 PM

Idk how this team can afford NOT to sign suter this summer. We better hope he doesn't re sign with the preds...

kudymen 03-04-2012 06:16 PM

I'm sorry, but anything but this comes to my mind: What the hell?

JGalt 03-04-2012 06:16 PM

Uhhh I still have nightmares about how bad this team looked the last time Kimmo missed games.
