A hockey documentary aboout the fans
Ok so while talking with a very good and close friend that happens to be a Preds fan we got discussing our fandom and how it came to be. We got tossing some ideas around and I decided that while I am in school I need something to do to help take up some of my new found free time. So a hockey documentary idea was born. Not the typical all about the game and it's players but about the fans and how we all became fans. I am looking for info on when people started following the game be it as a kid when playing minor hockey or did your parents bring you up with the game. What the game means to you. If I could get a short video clip of you and your name and hometown. I am not looking for too much info as this isn't a personal info gathering session to sell off to polaticians or anything lol. I also would love to know if you played at all growing up. Those from overseas I would love some info from you and how you became a fan. Also did you follow a different team and are you still following that team or are you following your local team now.
ALso Thrasher transplants some insight from you on how it was when you guys got your team and how it was when it left would be great. Thanks for all your help Here is the youtube channel I set up to post the videos to if you are interested in helping out. Darren http://www.youtube.com/user/HockeyDocumentary Ok here are the outlines of what I am looking for in particular. 1.) Why you are a fan of the game of hockey first and foremost. 2.) How did you become a fan of the game 3.) When did you start following the game 4.) your best memory of the game be it NHL AHL minor hockey NCAA WC Olympic etc. 5.) Did you play hockey as a kid 6.) Do you follow the same team as your parents if your parents follow the game at all? 7.) Do you find the Olympics as exciting as the NHL? What do you think of the WJHC? 8.) If you are not from Canada or the US how did you get involved in following the sport and did you start before you moved here if you moved here? If not how did you get interested in the game in your country? 9.) Are you a fan of your hometown team or a fan of a team in another city? 10.) This is for fans from teams that may no longer be in those cities in which you originaly followed AKA Quebec Atlanta Cleveland Oakland etc. How did you feel when your team arrived? How did you feel when your team left? Thanks for all your help everyone Darren |
1-Hockey for me is one of my biggest passions, if not the biggest. Hockey is everything to me. I enjoy watching a ''ligue de garage'' game more than my favorite movie. The speed of the game, the skill it takes, the guts the pros have to play without a visor with 100MPH shots coming from eveywhere, the passion the players show make it more than just a sport. Being born in Quebec, it's in your blood. Even though i'm originally an immigrant, i couldn't help but fall in love with the game. This is surely very cliché to say, but i don't know what i would do without it in my life.
2-I was at zellers once with my parents when i was 8, and i saw one of those small plastic white hockey sticks, and i got my parents to buy it. The same night, a hockey game was on, i watched it and i was hooked. 3-answer is in 2 4-2 years ago i had a final in Uni, and it started 30 minutes before the legendary 53 shots caps-habs game. I did my exam in 15 minutes so i could leave to watch it. Usually you can't leave before at least an hour, but the teacher saw me wearing my habs t-shirt, looked at me and smiled, she said ''good game'' and let me leave. You all know what happened that game. 5-I never played hockey as a child, as my parents didn't really know about the game and couldn't afford the equipment, and i'm learning just now how to skate, etc.. 6-Iv'e always followed the Habs, and my parents watch it occasionally when i am. 7-I do follow them all, and i support and love team Canada all the way, but i don't find it as exciting as the NHL. It's not the Habs... 9-Montreal born and raised, Habs fan till i die. |

Thanks for the information that is the kind of stuff we are looking for. We have a number of peop0le reporting on this project and I am lining up some interviews with some out of town fans to help out also. As soon as I get some more video it will be posted up. I encourage anyone who has this kind of passion to post it up or even make a quick video and post to the youtube channel. Thanks to everyone who participates. Darren |

1) Why you are a fan of the game of hockey first and foremost.
A) The speed of the game. The hockey fights. It was always us against them ! 2.) All 11 kids are habs fans 3.) When did you start following the game A) 1971 4.) your best memory of the game be it NHL AHL minor hockey NCAA WC Olympic etc. A)Hawks and habs , the pocket scored twice and lemaire scored from center ice to win the cup (71 or 72). Dryden was and always will be my favorite player ever. And i always liked Tony O for the black hawks, sure glad we got three goals on him to win the cup that year. 5.) Did you play hockey as a kid A) Started playing goal at age 14, played till i was 48, had to stop, every bone in my body started to hurt. I'm 53 now and pretty much a cripple. 1.) Why you are a fan of the game of hockey first and foremost.
The combination of speed, skill and toughness that isn't in any other major sport. 2.) How did you become a fan of the game My father played and I can remember watching games as a young boy with him and my grandfather.3.) When did you start following the game Around 19784.) your best memory of the game be it NHL AHL minor hockey NCAA WC Olympic etc. 1980 US Olympic Gold Medal and 2011 Bruins Stanley Cup 5.) Did you play hockey as a kid Street hockey 6.) Do you follow the same team as your parents if your parents follow the game at all? Yes 7.) Do you find the Olympics as exciting as the NHL? What do you think of the WJHC? Love the Olympics, about as much as the NHL. Like the WJHC, but follow more closely when the US is relevant or if a Bruins prospect is playing.8.) If you are not from Canada or the US how did you get involved in following the sport and did you start before you moved here if you moved here? If not how did you get interested in the game in your country? N/A 9.) Are you a fan of your hometown team or a fan of a team in another city? Hometown Team 10.) This is for fans from teams that may no longer be in those cities in which you originaly followed AKA Quebec Atlanta Cleveland Oakland etc. How did you feel when your team arrived? How did you feel when your team left? [/I][/B] N/A |
Also if anyone is on Twitter I wil be posting there with updates etc @29Drydenshabs or on BBM for that just fire me a PM and I can connect with you there.

1.) The sense of unity you get from being a fan or even being in a beer league team is great, and hard to find in this day and age. The sport itself is super fun, and challenging as well; it's the best workout.
2.) My brother put me infront of the TV to watch a Habs game when I was a few months old and there was no turning back. 3.) 1990 4.) The Sidney Crosby goal during the 2010 Olympics. That was the first time I hugged my father in a long, long time. Just goes to show how the game unites people. 5.) Yes, street hockey and ice hockey. 6.) Not anymore, my father used to be a Habs fan but when we moved to Toronto in 1992, he became a Leafs fan. I remain a die hard Habs fan. 7.) I like the lengthiness of the NHL season, but I also like the specialness of the Olympics every 4 years. If there's anything to seperate the two, it's that there's little to no contact in the Olympics, and I wish there was. I love the World Juniors, however I hate watching some teams get blown out every year. 8.) N/A 9.) Yes, I was born near Montreal. 10.) N/A |
1) The speed and skill. The sacrifice players make to win games. The rivalries. The rough stuff. Personally when I play hockey, nothing else exists, just the game. Also, no matter what happens during the game, going out with both teams afterwards and having a drink. There's a certain camaraderie that exists that's awesome.
2) I was given a stick when I was 3 years old and it just kept growing from there 3) When I was 4 I would sneak downstairs to see what my father was screaming at and I ended up doing so everytime he screamed to watch games. My bedtime was 7pm at the time. When my parents found out what I was doing they just let me stay up to watch. 4) Saku Koivu's comeback from cancer. In game moment was our comeback against the rangers in 2008. Down 5-0 and the team never quit. 5) Yup. I've been playing all my life. I've made a lot of lifelong friends on those outdoor rinks or during cosom hockey. 6) Yea. My Dad's been a habs fan since he came to Canada in the 70s. 7) Exciting yes, but not as much as the NHL. I don't have as much investment in Team Canada as my Habs. For the national team I follow the team during their run. For the Habs its pretty much an all year affair. The Off season is filled with free agent news, draft pick, prospects and looking forward to the next season. 8) N/A 9) Hometown. Always been less than an hour away from the Bell Centre. 10) N/A |
Excellent keep them coming guys and girls. Also let me know if you want me to just do a quick video for you with the info you have provided or if you would like to do it yourself.

1.) Why you are a fan of the game of hockey first and foremost.
The speed and toughness of the game amazes me, also its one of the rare sports where the players dont handle the ball, puck, whatever directly but use a stick. 2.) How did you become a fan of the game Flipping through the channels When i was 8-9 years old and happened the catch the stanley cup final when the starts won the cup. Have been a fan of the sport since. 3.) When did you start following the game 1999 4.) your best memory of the game be it NHL AHL minor hockey NCAA WC Olympic etc. I Distinctively remember the game where Jose Theodore scored a goal against the Islanders and Patrick Polin scored twice. I remember screaming and waking up my family when Theodore scored. And theres obviously the 0-5 to 6-5 against New York. 5.) Did you play hockey as a kid Not in any kind of team, but sure with friends. 6.) Do you follow the same team as your parents if your parents follow the game at all? My parents follow my team, coming from Lebanon ockey was pretty much unknown for them. They're both fans of the habs now. 7.) Do you find the Olympics as exciting as the NHL? What do you think of the WJHC? I love the olympics, its an opportunity for the best players in the world to compete for their countries honor. But at the same time I've never been really interested in the WJCH... 8.) If you are not from Canada or the US how did you get involved in following the sport and did you start before you moved here if you moved here? If not how did you get interested in the game in your country? Im from canada 9.) Are you a fan of your hometown team or a fan of a team in another city? Fan of the hometown team. 10.) This is for fans from teams that may no longer be in those cities in which you originaly followed AKA Quebec Atlanta Cleveland Oakland etc. How did you feel when your team arrived? How did you feel when your team left? Nothing to say :P |

1.) Why you are a fan of the game of hockey first and foremost.
Because it's simply the best sport in the world. Unique combination of toughness and finesse. Also, nothing beats the Stanley Cup playoffs. What a ride it must be for those guys. The hardest trophy in sports to win. 2.) How did you become a fan of the game Grew up in a hockey mad house. Guy Lafleur was a god in our household. Heck, my name is Guy because my dad liked him so much lol 3.) When did you start following the game Early 90s. A bit too young to remember the cup in '93. Suffered through the dark years with the rest of you. 4.) your best memory of the game be it NHL AHL minor hockey NCAA WC Olympic etc. I was at game 6 versus the caps in April 2010. 50 + save performance by Halak. I've never witnessed anything like it. I know now what it must of felt like to watch Dryden in 71 or Roy in 86 and 93. 5.) Did you play hockey as a kid Yes, outdoor and house league from novice to midget. Nothing competitive though. 6.) Do you follow the same team as your parents if your parents follow the game at all? Yes, Habs hokey is a religion. 7.) Do you find the Olympics as exciting as the NHL? What do you think of the WJHC? I prefer NHL playoff hockey over Olympic hockey any day. I think the WJHC is hyped up by TSN and RDS more than anything. I don't particularly care since I don't get to watch in anyways (Usually in Florida for Christmas break). 9.) Are you a fan of your hometown team or a fan of a team in another city? Hometown team. Don't live in MTL anymore though. |
Thanks guys just uploaded your videos keep them coming.
