2005 Draft: What happens?

Has it yet been decided what will transpire in the event the strike is still on-going? :dunno:

Techincally without a CBA there cannot be a draft. There have been some small rumblings of a weighted lottery.

KingPurpleDinosaur 11-17-2004 11:49 AM

i am almost 95% sure there is no draft. i dont really understand why people think the draft will take place if there is no CBA. No CBA means no draft. it wouldn't make any sense if the caps got the #1 pick again, 2 yeras in a row, just imagine how many teams would be so angry at that. man, but just imagine the 2006 draft if there is no 2005 draft, that will have to be a helluva class.

I allways understood there would be a weighted lottery with the same teams ranked as the 2004 draft.

I personally don't think it's fair. If someone ends up with Ovechkin and Crosby, look out!

yeah it probably isnt fair. but thats what they will probably end up doing.
If there is a draft do teams that dont have their prospects signed from the 2003 draft lose them due to the 2 year rule? Flyers have Richards and Carter unsigned and have said they will not sign them until the CBA is resloved. So its not jsut the 2005 draft that is in question its issues like that as well.

Speed Demon 11-17-2004 03:00 PM

Ugh, I hate the caps so if they got Crosby too, I would be mad.

Kingz4life 11-17-2004 03:38 PM

I dont see how the draft could be in the same order. I don't think their stupid enough to that. I would rather have a lottery.

2005 Draft: What happens?

1. The Kings pick some guys...
2. Simultaneously, multiple threads, some bashing the Kings choices, Al Murray, Dave Taylor, etc. and other threads singing their praises are launched...
3. The board crashes from overload and then recovers...
4. We spend months discussing Junior and European players we've never seen play..
5. Go back to #2

Draft Day is a Great Day!!!

Don't forget reranking our prospects, and then proclaiming our new draftees to be the best yet. Then #2 and like you said.......Then in 2006......

We'll be lucky to get hockey any time soon. Knuckleheads :shakehead

Hockey News mentioned the possibility of an impasse allowing a possible draft.

so I think...
NHL declares an impasse, and holds the draft without a CBA.

Next season they use replacement players + AHL players/prospects/young players and any veterans that cross the line.

Goodbye to the 30 yrs and older greedy players. Time to start this league over with a new image.

How would a weighted draft work?

I hope that some teams contract (cough...Atlanta...Carolina....cough). Then we could have a dispersal draft along with the entry draft. Imagine having Crosby, Brule, Heatley, Kovalchuk, Lehtonen, Staal, etc all available. That would make having last year's draft order intact much fairer.

King Blazer 11-18-2004 08:50 AM

With respect to contraction, I'm not so sure that's in the near future. The "rumor" is that the AHL does not want "unaffiliated" teams in the league. They are currently at 28-teams and it is expected that they will grow to 30 for next season. It seems odd to me that if the NHL thought there was a possibility of contracting teams, they would allow the AHL to grow to 30. I know, they are different Leagues, and Dave Andrews the President of the AHL will go out of his way to tell you as much. The AHL Board of Governors includes many NHL execs. including Slats from the Rags and Gilmore from the Kings. In short, the AHL takes it's direction from the NHL and you need look no further than the rule changes that have been implemented in the AHL this season. Andrews finally caved at a press conference and admitted that every change came at the "request" of the NHL.

Since KB covered the other portion, I'll take this one. It'll work similiar to the draft lottery in resepct to the first pick.
They'll take last year's standings and the lower you finished in the standings, the more balls you will get in the lotto machine. Pittburgh whoch had the worst record would get a ball or two more than Washington and Chicago and so on up the standings with the number of lotto balls for each team being reduced accordingly.

Here's the answer

Quote:

The 2005 NHL entry draft is scheduled for June 25-26 in Ottawa. But central scouting director Frank Bonello says there must be a new collective bargaining agreement for a draft to be held.

He said if this season is wiped out but hockey resumes sometime later in 2005-06, a draft will be held then.
