what power play?

The power play for the AVS TOTALLY SUX!!!
We never seem to get any shots on goal.. wait a minute, we never are on the flipping PP!
I know this is beating the proverbial dead horse, but seriously when calling a game, can things get any more askew than last night? Olver breaths hard on the guy, ok, he did lightly tap the other guy the may have incidentally touched him as the player fell, but really what a steaming pile!

And how many completely missed or not called penelties where there? Its not just the broken nose blown call, (theres a joke there I just know it) its the entire game with no calls against CGF!
Whats wrong with this, how did this happen that teams are getting a free pass to do this..
Last week a player came off his feat and hit Downie in the head after Downie took a shot to the goal, no call no penalty no fine no suspension...
I think the Avs managment should be burning up the lines to the league office

PuddlesTheDuck 03-21-2012 09:54 AM

How we have so many more PKs than PPs is just beyond me.

falconski 03-21-2012 10:02 AM

after the calgary game, I believe it's actually intentional

I'm not sure who pissed in who's cheerios, but it's gotten beyond randomness for how badly we're getting shafted.

I guess if we win the games anyway, it doesn't matter, but it's freaking ridiculous.

freeboy 03-21-2012 10:13 AM

well, the last think the team needs is for one of the guys to snap.. or perhaps a bench clearing brawl and suspensions..
penelties are not just about fairness, its about ice justice for wrongs done, sometimes like last games these "wrongs" include unintentional faces getting hit by sticks...
Why cannot we have a instant reply or a video officail at each game?
How hard would it be to have an off ice ref looking at the game and wired to teh on ice guys...
this may never happen but I would be totally ape-poopie if I was a player and any of my linemates got cheapshotted, intentionally and no penelty was called

Razor29 03-21-2012 10:23 AM

Clearly all the other teams we face have kneepads on. Only explanation.

Stories 03-21-2012 10:27 AM

It's baffling, isn't it? Because we do a decent job of creating pressure where the other team is bound to take penalties, we have guys who are good at agitating and getting other guys to snap, and we get bloodied, and yet, no PPs still.

Conspiracy? :sarcasm:

I want us to make the playoffs so that the whole league can watch the nonsense firsthand.

We're 11 PPO behind Dallas with 2 extra games played.

You didn't watch the two years we lost to Dallas in the WCF, did you? Or the series against LA when Forsberg lost his spleen? Back then the refs didn't even bring whistles to the arena when the Avs were playing.

Unaffiliated 03-21-2012 12:19 PM

Please guys, no conspiracy stuff. I don't want our fanbase to sound like the Canucks'.

davpower 03-21-2012 12:20 PM

And how many game we had one pp and it was a delay of game..

freeboy 03-21-2012 01:16 PM

I just want to have enough buzz on the issue to get someones attention.. God are you listening?

I think it's random that we are the team that has the disadvantage in this case but I really think this just shows how bad NHL refs are.

How many times are they looking right at the play to miss an obvious hook, slash, hi-stick or whatever. It's brutal.
Most of the times it's even the ref at the other end of the ice making the call and the guy standing next to it doesn't seem to care at all.
NHL referees are just bad. No conspiracy, they're just bad.

Think its any coincidence that vancouver, detroit, pittsburgh, toronto, and montreal are in the top ten?:sarcasm:

Christian Litscher 03-21-2012 03:11 PM

I read the title as whats a power play which would have been more fitting.

Bubba Thudd 03-21-2012 03:25 PM

Our guys don't sell it as much as our opponents.

204 total PP's = 30th in the league. 329:57 total PP minutes = 30th in the league.

252 total PK's = 21st in the league. 433:35 total PK minutes = 25th in the league.

That's 48 more PK's. 103:38 more PK minutes. Both 30th in the league.

That means the Avs would have to play just over 5 1/2 periods of hockey on the PP just to break even. The 29th and 28th teams are Dallas and Ottawa. Both are nearly 40 mins ahead of Colorado (Dallas -64:57, Ottawa -64:34)

What makes even less sense is that 3 of the top 6 teams in PP/PK differential aren't even in playoff contention. 1. Columbus, 2. Carolina, 6. Toronto

freeboy 03-21-2012 06:05 PM

I would feel better if the things done behind closed doors where not so invisable.. like this
" Today the avs sued the nhl for gross missconduct and negligence leading to "
OR even
" today we drafted a formal protest to the nhl to institute a review "
but all we get is our paid for announcers telling us all the positive things ..
It sure was nice being in Canada for two and a half weeks to hear hockey critics! lol

NateTheGreat 03-21-2012 06:31 PM

Hopefully the league looks at the refs this off-season because i dont know if i can handle 1 more season like this.

Foppa2118 03-21-2012 07:01 PM

I think it's a lot of things combined.

They don't sell penalties, or dive like other teams do.
They don't play the politics and get in the ear of the refs to help influence the next call or non call.
They don't always go to the tough areas, and aren't one of the better passing teams to force the other team to pull you down.
They're the youngest team in the league so there's no respect factor in their favor.

I think these things all have to do with it, but most importantly the last one. Refs just don't give calls to young guys to try and teach them to stay on their feet, and for the same reason they call things tighter on them. Refs just aren't afraid to make bad calls or non call on young players, and the team is full of guys in that position.

It's pretty shameful though that the discrepancy is that high. Especially when the playoff race will be decided by one point, or even a tie breaker, and the refs have screwed them in that many games this year just because they're young.

Christian Litscher 03-21-2012 07:06 PM

^we're not a great puck control team forcing teams to take penalties. I think your 3rd point is the biggest one.

These two are the biggest factors, IMO. You almost never see an Avalanche player talking to the officials about missed or bad calls against. Hejduk is the Captain, but I don't think I've seen him do this once. I've seen Lando, Stastny, Downie (mostly yelling LOL), and EJ do this, but it is very infrequent.

I think this is it. We dont have any divers on this team. David Jones isnt diving hes just drunk.

jaems 03-21-2012 07:58 PM

It is indeed odd.

And I think it's worth complaining especially given the fact that scoring is down. Every single advantage you get makes that much more of a difference. I hate when fans say "play through it" or "deal with it" because it doesn't take in account the tough probabilities of winning a game against comparable opponents.

It's also annoying considering the Avs have an above average powerplay (11th in the league)

freeboy 03-22-2012 09:36 AM

Well, I watched two games at the same time, Chico van and Drw and NYR, and although I think there are many uncalled penalties... they blew the wistle there.. so again...
Noob ? of the day, do all the refs on the ice, ie linesmen and referee have the ability to call penalties..?
Is it unreasonable to think video whould be considered for the future?
