John Tortorella w/Michael Kay

It's on the bottom of the page

They can't worry about Pittsburgh. They have to worry about themselves. Doesn't worry about match ups. He feels the Rangers can beat any team in any series.

He feels Staal won't be Staal until next season. Needs an entire training camp. Missed too much time. Inconsistent.

Zuccarello has better foot speed than last season. Looks like Zuccarello has played his way into the playoff line-up if they started today.

I love big tough mean players but Zucc needs to play.He adds an eliment we lack..Creativity...He helps the PP and seems fearless..Lets see him get real minutes to see what he can do.

I like him on the 3 line with Anisimov. Now they just need a center that can hang with them.
I would even rather have Mitchell C that line and move Boyle to 4.

What time does he come on? Don't want to listen to Jets/Knicks stuff

I guess I don't understand why Staal needed a training camp to get to 100%? No amount of games and practices will get him to 100%?

Preparation for the season - strength training, conditioning, timing. He'll never get the months leading up to training camp back, or camp itself; the concussion robbed him of all that. Not until next season will he be the same.

I love Torts.

I wish I could shoot the breeze with that guy over a beer.

"Hey Torts, you want another round"

What I don't understand is why he cannot progress to where he needs to be.

Conditioning, but to a greater extent, strength training. Sitting out for that long, with his body type (Staal is naturally a rail), leads to a lot of lost mass. He looks much, much weaker on the puck this year. He needs an offseason to rebuild.

Fair enough.

Staal's offseason strength training regime is nuts. I read about it a few summers ago. He goes hard with cardio compound exercises, and kettle bells. I can't remember the trainer's name, but the guy is known for increasing explosiveness along with static strength and quickness, and has worked with quite a few NFLers.

During an NHL season there is literally no time to strength train. There's only a small period in between games, and that time is used for recovery. No weeks off to strength train and recover prior to game nights.

A big part of Staal's game the passed few season's is his athleticism. He just doesn't get out muscled ever, and the guy's a really solid skater on top of that. Right now we're seeing Staal just on natural talent alone. He wasn't lifting at all during his shutdown period, nor was he skating. Imagine not skating or training basically from prior to camp until now.

He's gifted with talent, but what makes his game a whole higher level is the way the guy is able to apply his power. He's been smooth skating and jumping into the play a lot lately. You couple that with a full offseason of strength training and skating and he's poised for a real breakout.

Keep in mind, his timing is still at late November/early December hockey… playing against people that have been playing all year. That would be off-set by him being rested, but I already covered why his body won't be where he likes it anyway.

Look up youtubes of Staal over the passed 2 seasons, and almost all his manhandling highlights are against Kovalchuk, Malkin, Crosby, and Ovechkin. All players that it takes a strong mix of power, awareness, timing, AND speed to shut down. It's easy to forget he really is THAT level of defender.

I would have never said that a few weeks but now I couldn't agree more! The guy has plenty of skill, creativity and hockey smarts.

Love how Tortorella curses up a storm behind the bench but somehow manages to smile at the same time.

"We know what we did"

SnowblindNYR 03-23-2012 09:43 AM

Imagine next year, if all are healthy and have training camp behind them, Girardi, McDonagh, MDZ, Staal, and Sauer. On offense could also have Kreider and Parise. I think that only one team in the east would be able to compete with that. Hell that's the case this year.
