Sharks Sign College Defenseman Matt Tennyson

Bob McKenzie ‏ @TSNBobMcKenzie
Hearing Western Michigan defenceman Matt Tennyson, a U.S. College free agent, has signed with the San Jose Sharks.

Anyone know anything?

MOD EDIT:

Not recently. I think he's from the Bay Area and he once played for the NAHL here in Frisco, TX (near Dallas). Don't know anything more about him besides hearing he was a good "Texas Tornado" (The NAHL team, which Ben Bishop played for as well).

Pleasanton raised good two way d-man, physical, big shot from the point. Had very good Sophomore & Junior seasons...he was named Second Team All-CCHA as voted on by the league's coaches. He's also a finalist for CCHA best offensive d-man.

There's a couple of scouts that thought he's been better than DeKeyser.

Wingels was a college FA wasn't he? Or is my memory failing

Edit: Apparently my memory failed

Great strategy. Trade for 7th round picks and sign college free agents.

Definitely our MO. Seems to work though, wasn't Desi signed the same way?

How else are The Sharks going to replenish the draft picks they've pissed away.

Inub0i 03-28-2012 04:27 PM

More College undrafted FAs, I'm excited!

ChompChomp 03-28-2012 04:31 PM

So does he count as the second Bay Area born prospect in the system now? (Acolatse being the first)

Lebanezer 03-28-2012 04:34 PM

Another Right handed defenseman? Thank the Lord!!! I was worried we were running out... :sarcasm:

wasn't a college FA, but he was an undrafted FA (he played OHL hockey for Sault Ste. Marie, the same org as Thornton)

Lebanezer 03-28-2012 04:35 PM

Does Tennyson plan on going to Worcester right away or is he waiting like Oleksuk?

The signing isn't confirmed yet but I'd guess he'll go to Worcester. Oleksuk wants to graduate...Tennyson is a Junior so that's probably not an option for him yet.

Well technically speaking Tennyson wasn't actually born in the Bay Area, but he was raised there.

A little info on Tennyson:

Good size, skates really well for a big man. One of his greatest assets is his shot. This guy has a cannon! He's got some good offensive upside too. He was paired with Dan DeKeyser on Western Michigan's top PP unit. He plays with a bit of grit, but I wouldn't call necessarily say that Matt will be a guy that'll rack up a ton of penalty minutes. He uses his size (6'2", about 215 lbs) really well both offensively and defensively. Protects the puck and really good along the boards. He can take guys off the puck due to his size, strength and reach.

I hope this helps you all out. ;)

Ha, I couldn't tell if you're being sarcastic.

I like these undrafted FAs from college, too. Shows they have ethic to make it this far. Hopefully, they can be developed.

you guys just got my favorite UFA NCAA player... Tennyson is the real deal, a kid that is mean and tough yet has a blast from the point and very capable of running any teams power play.

he still has a lot to work on, but the kid was the CCHA defensive player of the week twice this year and has all the tools to be a top 4 player for you guys.

Has excellent size at 6'2 215lb and has improved vastly on his defensive game this season as opposed to last year. if you make the playoffs and someone gets hurt, it would not shock me if he is the first guy brought up...kid has tons of raw ability and is just tipping the iceberg right now.

congrats to him!
