31 Years- Zero Top 4 Picks

Now the Habs have locked up a top 4 pick, it will be the first time in 32 years that they will go into the draft with a top 4 pick. That's kind of impressive especially when you consider the dark years of the late '90's and early '00's when we missed the playoffs 4 out of 5 years. We have had 2 top 5 picks over those 31 years, (Price '05, Svoboda '84) and 7 top 10 picks (2 were in one year, '84 with Svoboda and Corson)

Interesting stat.

How many top 5 picks have the Penguins and Lightning had?

JustAHabFan 04-06-2012 09:42 AM

Timmins please make our pick count.:handclap:

We're gonna win the lottery, I can feel it.

FYI Wickenheiser was 1st overall in '80, although I'd like to forget that one too :(

Oddly enough, I feel the same way.

Should Toronto win the lottery I think half of this board is going to go on suicide watch, myself included.

I have full confidence that Timmins is going to draft us a difference maker, that coupled with some solid defensive prospects already in the system and hopefully some aggressive managing this summer, we could very easily rebound next season.

Pierre Gauthier. The WORST GM in Montreal Canadiens history. Even worse than Houle.

Maybe his horrible legacy will lead to a very bright future for the Habs.

That was 32 years ago though, I counted from 1981 to 2011, so over those 31 years we haven't had 1 top 4 pick.

My bad, went from your post which said "first in 32 years".

Did you choose the post-Wickenheiser era on purpose? I'm curious ;)

Did he run over your dog or something. I don't think I've ever seen a hockey fan so fervently hate someone.

I am a fan of Les Canadiens and that moron destroyed this team in three years.

Are you happy that we are a last place team? And forget the juvenile "tank" bull ****. Detroit does not finish last and they are competitive every year.

So yes, I hate that ****er Pierre Gauthier for what he did to my team. And I am still baffled that people are still saying that he wasnt that bad.

Just replacing Martin by an inexperienced coach was already a sign of "bad" things" to come...

Last Summer non-moves (besides the signing of Cole) were signs of bad things to come - No good Plan B for defence and nobody to play on the 4th line.

The training camp was atrocious. At least, we have discovered a couple of bright hopes: Gallagher and Beaulieu.

As a draft junkie, I'll be the most excited I have been since 2005, for the obvious reasons.

Miller Time 04-06-2012 10:44 AM

just keep those fingers crossed that we don't end up with a dud...

I trust our draft team (assuming Timmins is still running the show come draft day), but guys like Zherdev, Pouliot & Hickey have been top-4 picks in recent years :amazed:

a miss with this pick would be a huge blow.

let's hope it's a homerun!

Gary Bettman hand picking the #1 pick for a franchise in the dolldrums and needing a superstar and savior (Columbus)?

Houle (not alone, but he was supposedly the one making the decisions) destroyed a good team.

Gauthier made a mediocre team more mediocre.

except Gauthier had a pretty serious hand in making the team mediocre in the first place... as Dir.Pro Scouting & then as Assistant GM.

We don't know how much of a role Gauthier played exactly in Gainey's disastrous last few years, which IMO were worse than what Gauthier did as the head guy. Either way I'm glad they are both gone and we can get some new ideas. I know it's nice to have one guy to blame for everything but it clearly was the case of error of judgement of a few people.

I think this season was a fluke but I also think it's time for a culture change. I just hope we get someone modern thinking and not another stubborn dinosaur or former player resting on their Habs legacy.

I agree with you 1000%. He knows that Canadian teams full of third and fourth line pluggers will still draw 20,000 per game........His focus is the good ole USof A( Archie Bunker----the non cartoon Peter Griffin that I grew up with):laugh: He would be heartbroken to hand that cup to Vancouver or Ottawa. The NHL hates going back to Winipeg or Quebec City and thats the bottom line. I remember the way he offered Edmonton that assistance money and it is a drop in the bucket to what he has given to make hockey as relevant as dog racing in alot of US cities where nobody cares.

Well actually it was 33 years ago, I was counting 31 years from '81 to '11 and then this year gives us the first in 32 years, and the 2nd top 4 pick in 33 years.
