RJ to INCREASE games called next year!

Thank God.

Realize he missed the games off, even though he called 57.

"I'm not suggesting I am coming back to do all the games. I just think my schedule could have been adjusted. Until next season's schedule comes out, I can't do anything until then. I just went overboard a bit this season. I took 17 days off in January and actually did something on about 10 of those days."
More RJ, less Ksly :)

Duddy 04-08-2012 09:02 AM

great start to the offseason.

:handclap:

AV18 04-08-2012 09:16 AM

This is amazing news.

Flophound 04-08-2012 09:28 AM

I can picture RJ sitting around at home on his butt pillow* not having anything to do.

*I think a few years back someone stole the butt pillow that he sat on for years while calling the games. A couple days later a fan had sent him a new one.

New Sabres Captain 04-08-2012 10:18 AM

Thank the heavens.

I was worried he might decrease his games to 0, but then he does this?

These guys better get their acts together next year. RJ deserves the opportunity to make the one call we've all been waiting for.

Give me Brian Duff as the color man!

Amen to that!

Ideal TV team IMO:

HOME GAMES:
PxP: RJ
Color: Brian Duff
Intermission host: Adam Benigni
Between the benches: Rob Ray

AWAY GAMES:
PxP: RJ or Dan Dunleavy of FAN 590
Color: Duff
Intermission host: Kevin Sylvester (assuming Benigni has to stay in town for Ch. 2 news)

Retire Neale, Robitaille and Gare ASAP.

If Brian Koziol were willing to leave WGR, I'd rather have him than Sylvester.

enrothorne 04-08-2012 01:23 PM

Put me in the group of wanting nobody near the benches. Two voices is plenty. There's nothing bad about a few seconds of hearing just the game. Three people means someone is usually waiting to talk.

Fire Me 04-08-2012 01:24 PM

wow it felt like K-Sly called a lot more than 25 games this season.

SLOT SHOTTTTTT!!!!!

In general, I can see that view and somewhat agree - but Ray has certainly improved over time where he's transformed that role of his from just chiming in meaningless banter to the two in the booth to now adding insight to what's being said on the benches, amongst the referees or players on the ice near him because he was in the best position to hear it.

There were many times when penalties were called during games or officials congregating to discuss something that neither guy in the booth could figure out and Ray was able to right away say what the penalty was for or what the players coming off the ice said to each other, all of which added informative value IMO to the game calling.

Who can ever forget the infamous screaming match between Ruff and Bryan Murray back in 2007, where each stood up on the boards on either side of Ray, and hearing his account of the action afterwards? In similar circumstance, Maguire had the same "benefit" during the Penguin-Flyer game on NBC last weekend.

If the guy assigned to that spot is savvy enough to realize and take advantage of that special location of the action they have, I think it's definitely a worthy addition to broadcast teams. However, if it's someone who just stands there and adds comments from the peanut gallery, I agree that it clutters up and dilutes the announcing of the game.

Anyone else think Sylvester will spend all summer trying to come up with more cliche, catch-phrases (in emulation of RJ) like that or "Ennis the menace"? :sarcasm:

SabresBillsBuffalo 04-08-2012 02:22 PM

He is so mean to Harry though.

Duff told me via tweet that he'd be honored to join the booth on a full-time basis next year.
I really hope he gets a shot.

Also, while RJ is miles better than Sylvester, he he's certainly taken steps back in recent years and isn't too high-quality of a PBP guy himself these days. It's unfortunate. Hopefully he's better next year, though I doubt it. He's really diminished these past three seasons or so.

McTank 04-08-2012 04:16 PM

Thank god, I forgot about our winning under RJ window, how many years do you think he'll keep commentating

jamers 04-08-2012 06:10 PM

Happy days! Get Duff in there with him -- keep Razor on the ice. He has definitely gotten better at helping fans get an idea of what goes on at ice level.

RJ realized hearing Sylvester was taking years off his life

jfb392 04-08-2012 06:44 PM

I was hoping he'd retire because like Loods said, he's really started declining.
At least he's still better than Sylvester though.

Dixon Ward 04-08-2012 07:05 PM

why won't daddy warbucks hire a good broadcast team?

With good reason - RJ has to keep correcting him on simple, obvious facts like what the score is, which player just got a penalty or assisted on a goal or what period it is. Neale's deteriorating attention span and meaningless mumbles of corny jokes or irrelevant trivia clearly are detracting from RJ's work and likely becoming annoying to RJ, despite his friendship with Neale.......

...which is why I think if Black is savvy enough to promote Duff to that role, it would be a win-win situation for everyone. Duff would get a full-time role working for the team he grew up following; fans and viewers would get refreshing and well-thought commentary for the first time in years; and I think RJ would be frankly rejuvenated by working alongside a true professional who obviously does his homework and is well prepared for every game. Duff would do what an analyst is supposed to do: add in-depth insight to the action and passion RJ brings.

I almost am just as hopeful for serious upgrades to the broadcasting crew this summer as I am for upgrades to the roster and on-ice product.

It certainly could be a factor - RJ has always pledged his gratitude and appreciation to the fans that helped make him the legend he has become. Maybe he feels sorry that his decision to do less games results in a depressing product for fans to listen to in the games he skips.

For the same reason, maybe some of RJ's corrections or brush-offs of Neale's comments happen - it sounds sometimes like RJ just wants to say, "Just shut up, Harry".

VaporTrail 04-08-2012 08:12 PM

Thank goodness !!!

MORE RJ !!!
