Bobrovsky Sophomore Slump

2010-2011
GP 54 28 wins 13 losses 8 ot losses .915 save % 2.59 GAA

2011-2012
GP 29 14 wins 10 losses 2 ot losses .899 sv % 3.02 GAA

Thoughts on the upcoming year for BOB? Can we hope to see some improvement? Or is it time to turn elsewhere?

I was actually just wonder how far up we could move trading Bob + our first.

I'm no goalie expert, but it seems like he's lacking fundamentals. For one, he's got a bad habit of lifting his arms/shoulders up with his glove down. Most importantly, his five-hole is terrible.

TheIceman26 04-09-2012 12:30 PM

i wouldn't throw him away for a mid round draft pick but if somethig like 2 seconds or a first was offered, i don't know how the flyers could turn it away. He doesn't have a future here.

kicksave27 04-09-2012 12:33 PM

His workload also significantly dropped, some guys need games, not practice to stay sharp. The defense last year was also far better than this year.

OccupySouthBroadSt 04-09-2012 12:36 PM

I wouldn't characterize this season as a sophomore slump...he needs to still polish his game but that comes with actually playing more. I never felt he was able to gain momentum and that's b/c they had to suck it up and get Bryz to find his game. Bob's body of work to pass objective judgement was incomplete IMO...

kicksave27 04-09-2012 12:37 PM

His puckhandling got significantly better, so he's working on his game at least

Xegiie 04-09-2012 12:55 PM

well apparently sitting him 10 games then throwing him in, doesn't do any good.

i can't tell he would do better if he was as #1 but he didn't do well when he got back in

TheLegendkiller 04-09-2012 12:57 PM

It took Carey Price 4 seasons to become solid. Carey Price, 4 seasons.

flyersfan187 04-09-2012 01:11 PM

I am not worried about him. Bob will be a starting goalie in this league in time, he just needs time.

mirimon 04-09-2012 01:41 PM

As long as there's a bonus cushion for the next season, I have no problem having Bobrovsky as our backup. There might be a better option out there, perhaps, but there are also a lot worse. If we can get the defense we've had towards the end of this season as the norm for next year, I think his numbers will improve.

DrinkFightFlyers 04-09-2012 01:49 PM

If someone offers a pick or some decent prospects, get on it. He's not going be a starter here as long as Bryz is here, and Bryz ain't goin nowhere. If he isn't dealt, his stats are fine for backup. You'd like to see better starts, but as a backup, you are never (rarely) going to get starter stats. That is why they are backups. $1.75 million is a lot of money for a backup. You can get a backup on about the same current level (meaning level now, not in a few years) for $1 million. Having potential in a backup goalie isn't worth much other than trade bait when you have $5 million a year for nine years.

Beef Invictus 04-09-2012 01:51 PM

I'm concerned about the way he slowly gets worse as the season gets on. Happened last year, happened this year.

Yea, last year we caulked it up to being overplayed... that isn't the case this year.

If there's a bonus cushion in place, his cap hit is only .900 I believe.

I'd still lean toward trading him. As a backup, his stock really isn't going to go up. If he can be turned into something useful, I'd deal him. There are other backups out there that can be had for even $900k I would bet. If he is at $900k though, I wouldn't be upset with him as the backup next season.

DrinkFightFlyers 04-09-2012 02:06 PM

Another thing I would be cool with is extending his contract, but I don't see him wanting to stay here. I think he has a shot to be a starter elsewhere so I doubt he would interested backing up Bryz for a few more years. That's why I really think they need to get something for him. Although if he is offer-sheeted I suppose they could get something decent for him next year if he gets a couple million. I could see him getting $2.5-$3, not sure what the compensation would be for that. 3rd rounder?

sa cyred 04-09-2012 02:11 PM

I dont think a late first is out of the question value wise. Yea he struggled at times but so did our other goalie. His potenial and amount of games played already is pretty good for a 23 yr old goalie

If there is one player on our team who has a chance to be traded before or on draft day its Bob. Him and Carle's rights

Flyerfan4life 04-09-2012 02:21 PM

i like Bob both as a person and as a Flyers goalie..

but at this point the best thing for both sides is to trade bob to a team that can/will make better use of him.

Flyers are hyper commited to Bryz, so what we really need is a solid backup that understands his role. i personaly feel bob is wasted as a backup. least a backup who's only going to play infrequently (barring injury to the starter)

i'd be super happy to see Leights come back in the backup role behind Bryz, but i doubt it happens.

im sure there are plenty of Teams willing to swap some parts for Bob.

I am no Parent. But I have played some goal. Another thing that stands out is that he plays very "small" for his size. I would move him if possible and sign a vet to back up Bryz.

U forgot about JVR he still could get traded there was alot of interest in him at the deadline and u still could see him to toronto for schenn +

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't think JvR for Schenn is a bad idea. I think it is safe to say that JvR will be the better player out of the two (by how much is a different story and is open to debat), but this team desperately needs defense. Outside of Briere and Jagr, the scoring forwards are all young and rising or in their prime. A fully developed JvR would be scary with the rest of these guys reaching their full potentials, but its not going to be very helpful if Coburn and Carle are the top pairing after Timonen retires...

And Price, beside being a 5th overall pick, has definitely been equipped with more natural talent than Bob from the beginning.

Way to go for Bob. Very unlikely he will still wear the O&B when he finally hits his peak if he ever becomes a fulltime starting goaltender in this league.

Im guessing you think Bob has no value at all? I would say he has alittle less than Varlarmov had one year ago. Valarmov got traded for a 1st and 2nd. I dont think its unreasonable to think that another first or trading up is out of the question if Bob is added.

Yea he had a bad season, but at 23 yrs old he has 42 wins, 23 losses (10 OT) with a 2.73 gaa and a .909 sv%. If a team thinks he has a future, a first is not out of the question at all.
