Eakins could be coaching for the Flames.

Interesting. Would love to see him or Troy Ward.

Other candidates being mentioned for the Flames' job include Troy Ward, head coach with Calgary's farm team, former Bruins coach Mike Sullivan, ex-Oilers coach Craig MacTavish, Bob Boughner and Bob Hartley.

A disciplinarian defense first coach who has no experience handing a bunch of primadonnas? Yeah, that sounds like it would be a winner for this team.

I could handle Eakins

tyflames 04-15-2012 10:24 PM

Why does not Bob Hartley?
I know little to nothing about him but the idea is that he is an automatic no from fans, and I just would like to know why, because I have no opinion about him?

From what I understand, Hartley is a guy who leans on his veterans a lot. For a team that is trying to get younger (and a team that is much-maligned for having too many vets, and under-achieving ones at that), Hartley is a bad fit.

Ugh Eakins is pretty much another Sutter. D-First, has a system ect.

Not a good idea IMO.

As long as we win games, I'll be happy.

Agreed. The Flames don't have the personnel to be defense first team. And since the organization isn't going to be making major changes to the roster, they need to find a coach that works with what they have.

"I am a defence-first coach," Eakins explained. "I want the players to contest the puck when we don't have it in all zones. For me, the second best way to defend is to have the puck and be a real strong cycle team. When we don't have the puck we are at full speed trying to get it back. And when we do get it back, we're not looking to kill you off the rush; we're looking to get the puck down deep and wear you down by hanging on to the puck looking for our scoring chances that way.
Hey, that sounds familiar! If we're hanging on to Iginla, this is an awful idea.

I think it sounds better than what Sutter employs as long as that system described stays intact with a lead rather than having them go into a shell.

And Troy Ward has pretty much the same system too.

Sweet deal we get to watch Minnesota hockey.....

Seriously no rush offense? What he going to do wait until the other team falls asleep?

Going to kill all creativity in Sven just like Backlund!

I want John Anderson, who's an assistant of the Yotes right now.

When he was the coach of the IHL/AHL Wolves, he won the league championship 4 times in 11 seasons and was a consistent contender throughout. Working with the AHL club, he's obviously used to working with younger players and AHL vets.

His goalies with Atlanta were an injury-prone Lehtonen and Hedberg the first year, and Hedberg and a rookie Pavelec the 2nd year. He was also under who is probably the worst GM in the last 10-15 years in Waddell.

Not the ideal enviroment for a first-time NHL coach. But he got a career year out of Todd White at 33, a renaissance for Kozlov at 36, two of Kovalchuk's best years (PPG-wise) were with him, Little had 30 goals as a rookie, Enstrom emerged as a PP QB. He can work with offensive players, and Feaster is clearly looking to make this in to a puckmoving team going forward instead of the (unsuccessful) gritty/defensive teams of the past.

He's a guy I like too. Hopefully he can put Sven, Backlund, and Brodie on the right track to become top end players.

Scratch that, the whole team :handclap:
