Red Wings' Danny Cleary feeling better, might play with Pavel Datsyuk in Game 4
Quote:

DETROIT – Detroit Red Wings forward Danny Cleary has no points in three playoff games, but he is skating much better after getting a pain-killing injection before each game, and he might be rewarded tonight with a spot on Pavel Datsyuk's line.

Cleary practiced with Datsyuk and Johan Franzen Monday, and coach Mike Babcock indicated that is how he likely will start in Game 4 tonight against the Nashville Predators at Joe Louis Arena (7:30, Fox Sports Detroit).

“We didn't skate this morning, so, on my lineup card that's how I have them,'' Babcock said. “But since that time we've talked about how we liked Abby (Justin Abdelkader) and Cleary and Bert (Todd Bertuzzi) together, too, so we'll see.''

Asked it matters to play who they're playing with, Cleary said, “Maybe the only guy is Mule (Franzen), when he wants to play with Pavel.

“Listen, we have a good bunch of guys and at this time of year it doesn’t matter. It’s whatever it takes and who cares what line you’re on or what guy you’re playing with. This time of year it’s all about winning and team.”

That said, who wouldn't want to play with Datsyuk?

“I think any guy in the league would like to have his name next to Pavel,'' Cleary said. “Let’s be honest, he’s an incredible talent and he’s a hard-working guy and he gives you every chance out there to be successful. If you get a chance – I’ve played with him a number of times, so it’s nothing new – just have to make sure you work hard.”

Cleary said of his ailing left knee, “Mentally, it’s nice to know that you can move freely, like so many different movements that I wasn’t able to do, so certainly feels a lot better.''

So I basically copied Shoalz's last GDT and removed game 3 stuff. I don't have time to add game 4 details. Mods or users can edit or list below.

I'm pretty nervous, we have to win this game!

Unsportsmanlike 04-17-2012 01:21 PM

Here's an idea: win an offensive zone faceoff against Paul Gaustad

RedWingsNow* 04-17-2012 01:24 PM

How far would the Preds have to go in the playoffs to make Gaustad worth the first, assuming he was a beast on faceoffs, the whole way through

If he doesn't re-sign with them: at least the third round. At that point, the added revenue for the playoff games might make it worth it to them.

If he does re-sign: a couple of rounds.

Also, it would depend what he re-signed for. $3m+ is a big chain to wear for a guy getting 12 minutes a night and on a club that may have an internal cap.

I dont speak for all of the fans, but for me just past the 1st round. We paid the first to keep him from you.

I have a good vibe about this game. Plus I think it's safe to call this a "must win" already. (Game 3 might have been one too :P)

I hate playing catchup. Everything is a must-win when you're behind.

Vladdy84 04-17-2012 02:21 PM

Must win. Goals from Cleary and Bert tonight.

WingedWheel1987 04-17-2012 03:35 PM

Babcock on one goal losses.

"I can tell you every year we've won, we never remember any of that crap," he said. "We just remember winning. We don't remember that we won 10 one-goal games. Or that last year, someone told me we lost to San Jose three times in overtime.
"Or (when) the Montreal Canadiens won the Cup, someone told me they won 11 times in overtime or something like that.
"Just win."

Those one goal losses dont mean jack***. Wings either win or fail. There is no middle ground.

Dont settle for "ohhh it was a close series" Thats what other teams not the Red Wings say.

giraffywaffy 04-17-2012 03:37 PM

Lines will look a little different to start the game (though I don't imagine they'll stay that way).

Babcock is trying to find the right combination of players to offset the loss of Helm on the 3rd line.

Their season certainly isn't done, it just makes the odds more difficult.

Cleary? WHY!!!! He's been better, but he's not the guy you put on DATSYUK's wing.

I don't think he'll finish the game there, but I'm fine with it. He's been playing pretty good and if he play tough and dig out pucks down low, keep the possession in our favor for datsyuk and lidstrom and franzen, it could work well. We shall see if it solves a bit of our slow starts in the 1st period.

I'm sure Nyquist and Bert and Cleary will be shifting quite a bit tonight on different lines.

i think beating the wings in 1st round is a pretty good thing to gain attention. revenue or not, i think in the end if nashville is able to make some noise in this POs like beating the wings and play a good 2nd round (or advance) he was worth it.

the revenue from games is of course important, but a growing fanbase seem to be even more important and you only get this by making the news and be a discussed topic in town/region.

I'm usually a pretty optimistic guy when it comes to the Red Wings, but if they lose this one then it's as good as over in my opinion. Nashville is too good this year to let a 3-1 series lead slip away. Of course I'll be rooting for the Wings 'til the bitter end, but this is a must-win.

TheOtherOne 04-17-2012 03:55 PM

Cleary has showed great chemistry with Pav in the past, and if the last few games are an indication of his current level I think we can hope for good things.
