Doesn't include hockey but interesting nonetheless (or sports, in general)

San Juan being third in the US is mildly surprising

So if they had the dates hockey and basketball use available, I guess they'd be even further up the list. As would MSG and Staples.

So if the numbers don't include sporting events, what do they mean? Is the ranking even valid without including those events?

It's basically a measure of concerts and other shows, which is relevant to the discussions here about teams' profits/losses from arena operations subsidizing teams' revenues - for those teams which play in an affiliate controlled/operated arena.

Philips can do fine without the Thrashers. The Sprint Center can do OK w/o a primary sports tenant. Dallas, Nashville, & Florida would seem to generate significant arena revenues - Columbus, Carolina, & Phoenix, not so much.

Got it. So does it include non-tenant sporting events like annual tournaments, Harlem Globetrotters, etc?

It's not clear what Pollstar defines as non-sporting events - but I would assume it excludes pro, minor league, and college sports as well as things like tennis tournaments, boxing, MMA, etc. How it treats "sports" like WWE or the Globetrotters is unclear.

Globetrotters would definitely count as they even list the globetrotters on their site, which, by the way, is a great way to find out what's going on for live music in a city. stars on ice and that sort of thing are also listed.

WWE related events don't appear to be tracked, so it's questionable as to whether they are included. what they list as events for visitors to their site may not be what they count for ticket sales.

and in case the link gets deleted

first time mexico has the top arena in NA i believe. Centre Bell reclaims top spot in Canada/US. I think the two british arenas took a hit from the olympics.

MSG numbers seem to be down in every year from 2010, most likely due to the renovation. MSG is closed during the summers of each year. We will most likely see them low on the list for next year's numbers as well.

No concerts at MSG during the summer? Seems odd:dunno:

The renovation is the reason they are closed in the summer. Not due to there being no NHL or NBA.

I guess because it is an older arena or just the way it was designed? Seems like most arenas with NBA/NHL teams also host many other events throughout the year with no issues.

They normally do have other events.. Do you really not know how a renovation works, or do you not know that MSG is undergoing a massive renovation?

I wasn't aware of it until it was mentioned in this topic. I don't live in New York so I don't really pay attention to what is going on up there.

over the past few years (summer 2011, 2012, 2013) MSG has been undergoing a $1B renovation. All the work is being done in the summer to prevent disrupting the Rangers and Knicks.
