what changes needed?

if the the pens come back and beat us, besides defense, what changes to see happening because i know if the flyers getting sweep by the bruins hurts more last year but blowing a 3-0 will be catastrophic not only on the players/coaches but ed snider too, he's going to demand major changes because he's not going to accept ******** like last year.

Flyguy_1ca 04-21-2012 10:43 AM

If the d was healthy they would need no changes. With pronger mez gross or even bourdon this series would be over already

lancer247 04-21-2012 04:59 PM

they need their young guys to get a year better (Schenn, Coots, Simmonds, Voracek, Read) and Bryz to ply like a top 10 goalie.

No changes needed. Some breaks with injuries would be nice.

Maybe a goalie coach that can get to Bryz.

RoDu 04-21-2012 05:01 PM

no changes can be made at this point, only tinkering

StandingCow 04-21-2012 05:05 PM

Dress 7 D men.

Justified 04-21-2012 05:16 PM

well with regards to this series, split up the Briere line. he is getting schooled by Staal.

The thing I love the most about this team is that they are only going to get better with age. Im really excited for the future. Bryzgalov just needs to learn how to be consistently solid and our defense could probably use a little tweaking.

Jumping 04-21-2012 05:50 PM

I think they need to move Bob and hopefully get a better 6th defenseman. Maybe to CBJ for Clitsome?
Their 2nd goalie should be an under $1,000,000 guy.

Bruins came back and won a cup. insane motivation i'd say. We looked good last night. Fleury won them that game. we could've easily had 2 in the 3rd and we just couldn't get one in. briere with those two shots at the pad, hartnell missing the open net. I'm not worried until were down by 2 in the 3rd period of game 7. The challenge got mutated when we went up 3 - 0 and now were just adjusting back to cornered rat mode. It sucks to lose but i loves me some playoffs. I just love the bandwagon wussies tho. its ridiculous

IF they come back to beat us, they SHOULD overhaul defense in the offseason. Since Suter is the only UFA worth a damn, we'll probably going to have to make some trades, which will cut down on our offense. We shouldn't bet the house on acquiring Suter. I can see guys like JvR, Read, Bob, and maybe Wellwood getting dealt/packaged in the offseason for defensemen.

Carle and Kubina walk. Keep Jags. He'll be more vital to the future sophomores than people realize.

Defensive specialists and physical guys (ex: Mark Stuart, Johnny Boychuk, Kevin Bieksa) would be at the top of my list.

Flyerfan4life 04-21-2012 06:52 PM

no more posts.. thats what we need..

those early post pings could have cemented the victory.. godamit

MsWoof 04-21-2012 07:02 PM

Forwards who can get points and who play defense. Giroux is almost as bad as Briere and Jagr defensively now and the defense of all 3 is overlooked when they're putting up the points. Lavi also has to coach the team to be more defensively responsible as a whole.

I can't see BOS getting rid of Boychuk or Van getting rid of Bieksa.

Mark Stuart probably could be had. Its going to be very very difficult to improve our defense this offseason. Four guys will get paid Suter, Wideman, Garrison, and Carle and everyone else is a "4-6".

Trades always happen though, I never thought Minnesota would move Brent Burns...and they got a good deal for him though.

I would seriously consider trading ALOT not named Giroux or Couturier for any of Boghosian, OEL, or Gubrandson (in that order).

If the Preds do sign Suter, then they may have some young talent they can let go, they have like 3 good young D prospects that are ready to play in the NHL now.

I'd definitely like to see more defensive play from this team.

Giroux and Jagr (he's so slow in transition) at least TRY to play defense.

I would trade Bob and replace him with a Veteran backup, someone like a Martin Biron, someone who has experience, is inexpensive, and can play 20 games.

The Flyers are going to have to do something with defense with the loss of Pronger and possibly Carle. I don't know about pursuing Suter or Weber, since they will eat up over 7 million in cap space for 10 years. That will hamper our ability to sign our own players when they become RFAs. I'd like to sign some serviceable d-men in the 3 million range, but I have no clue who that might be. I also wouldn't mind a Sean O'Donnell veteran type for cheap and a 1 yr contract.

Even if the Flyers lose, I still see the season as a success. I thought making the playoffs was a good goal. Losing to the Penguins is still losing to the better team. It's not like we were the 1 seed losing to the 8 seed and blowing a 3-0 lead. So I don't think there needs to be some big overhaul.

SOD is really slow...he'd get killed out there.

I'm of the mindset where I'd almost rather see Manning and Gus than Kubina and Lilja. We are getting KILLED by speed right now.

I agree with this ! although some of our board drama queens will start the crazy talk nonsense like.....Fire Lavy, blow up the team etc....Win or lose our club has had a heck of a year considering all of the injuries etc...We win this series we have a great chance at a cup before us even with the injuries, rookies, etc.

SeanCWombBroom 04-21-2012 08:32 PM

Not much.

If the hockey gods hadn't snatched Pronger and Mez from the team, they would all be hanging out of Hartsy's place eating grill cheese sandwiches waiting their next opponent.

If pronger is really done, we need a #1 defenseman. There's no way around that. Kimmo is already breaking down, and it won't get any better. The flyers can't afford not to take their absolute best run at suter/weber and make an effort to get the best blueliner possible with our pick. I also wouldn't mind getting a veteran 4th line center that can take over the Role next year and we can move briere to the wing and make coots the 3rd line center. A guy like pahlsson, perhaps. I'd also trade bob for whatever we can get for him, and sign a veteran backup like hedberg.

I'm thinking
Hartnell-Giroux-Voracek
Jvr-Schenn-Briere
Simmonds-Couturier-Read
Talbot-Pahlsson-Wellwood/Sestito

Suter-Coburn
Timonen-Grossmann
Meszaros-Bourdon

Bryz
Hedberg (or a similar veteran backup)

Obviously this would all mean that Jagr wouldn't be resigned, unless he were willing to take a massive pay cut. I'm talking like in the 900k ballpark pay cut. Which I doubt happens. But you never know.

In which case maybe you'd do
Hartnell-Giroux-Jagr
Jvr-Schenn-Briere
Simmonds-Couturier-Voracek
Talbot-Pahlsson-Read
Wellwood/Sestito

Haha you are correct, I accidentally cloned voracek. Briere would be 2nd line RW.

i could see them move coburn because of his salary, he's not really a block type of defensemen, he's not that physical either i could see them put in guff to replace him, you never what homer does, neither coburn or jvr have a no trade clause they can both be moved for a big time defensemen. if timms retires, i could see them plug in a defensemen that's young and cheap, they dont need old defensement i trust homer.

this team was great without jvr, they scored 8 goals, having him in the lineup right now worries me, he looks really slow out there.

Meszaros is gone before Coburn.

Yeah I just threw them out there as examples of the type of defensemen. I was really looking forward to seeing if Boychuk made it to FA this summer, but BOS locked him up.
