How to tell if ice is thick enough?
I like to play on ponds in the winter, but its hard to tell whether the ice is thick enough for multiple skaters.

I'm sure there is a better way than our current method which is to draw straws. Shortest straw has to go test out the ice. We usually attach a tow rope to him in case he falls in, but the rope is only 20 feet long.

Any tips?

Get a hand operated auger. It's best to wait until you have a consistent weak of cold temperatures to ensure the ice should be frozen quite thoroughly. Also, the guy you send out should crawl to distribute his weight so it's not centralized and could potentially cause him to fall through
